Hello Escapist Forum

I just bought the Star Wars Jedi Knights Collection on steam which includes

Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy,
Star Wars Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast,
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II,
Star Wars Jedi Knight: Mysteries of the Sith,
Star Wars: Dark Force

I probably won't play them all so which one should I play first?

Thanks from Jesse Bergerstock aka SingleTap "Tap"

Jedi Academy is the best out of those, in my opinion.
You play as a Jedi the entire time, get to customize which powers you want, and I found it really fun.
And I don't know how big the multiplayer community is nowadays, but I remember that being pretty fun as well.

Well, Dark Force is the first game in the series, Dark Forces 2 is the second, Mysteries of the Sith is the third, Jedi Outcast is the fourth and then Jedi Academy is the fifth.

I personally started with Jedi Academy and went backwards to Jedi Outcast (both of these are very good games, in my opinion). I haven't played the other older games.

Note that if you do play them in the correct order, the first three games -are- old*, so if you can't stand old games/graphics don't play them.

*Mysteries of the Sith was '98, Jedi Outcast was 2002.

Mysteries of the Sith was actually an expansion pack to Jedi Knight, not a standalone game. You should go ahead and at least play Jedi Knight and Mysteries of the Sith, as they hold up as good games even today. There's even a mod for Jedi Knight that upgrades the models and textures to the standard of Jedi Outcast and Jedi Academy, although the modding community couldn't upgrade the Sith engine itself to the standard of the Idtech III engine, so the lighting and so on don't look as nice as the later games. Dark Forces would hold up today too, but it was one of the first games to ever use looking up and down, and it doesn't support mouselook, so the controls are really clunky by today's standards. If Lucius ever finishes <link=http://www.darkxl.df-21.net>DarkXL, that will be fixed, but he's been in Alpha for a couple of years now.

OT: I haven't actually played anything past the original Jedi Knight, so I can't say what's the best out of the series. With the ones I have played, I'd say the games themselves are of equivalent quality to one another, but Jedi Knight is much easier to get into for modern gamers, because it actually supports mouselook. Dark Forces made you use the pgup and pgdn keys on the keyboard instead, and I can't imagine someone who didn't play it when it was new putting up with that today. Heck, I grew up with the game, and the controls are the main reason I don't have it installed right now.

Dark Forces 2: Jedi Knight or Jedi Outcast are easily the best games. Dark Forces 2 has fucking enormous levels that are incredibly fun, while Jedi Outcast has a good story, great combat, and NO ROSH PENIN.
Fucking hate that guy.

I'd say Jedi Outcast. Just my opinion, but I think that adding dual sabers and saber staffs really borked up saber combat. Plus Outcast's story was better.

That said, I'd play any of them except the original Dark Forces (if you don't like the original Doom, you probably won't like Dark Forces) before subjecting myself to the ridiculous The Force Unleashed.

My personal favorite is Jedi Outcast. Academy had fun single player missions, but the story was weaker than in Outcast. Also, it got old seeing EVERYONE using dual sabers/staffs in multiplayer. Finally, Academy has Rosh Penin.

*shudder*

Dark Forces and Jedi Knight are both enjoyable, but time hasn't always been kind to them. Jedi Knight in particular feels a little rough around the edges nowadays, but it's still worth looking into.

Outcast may have had some absolutely atrocious level design at times, but it had solid combat and a compelling story. Multiplayer was a blast, particularly Capture the Flag. Chasing down a flag carrier at 60 mph with Force Speed was a defining gameplay moment for me (shame nobody actually plays multiplayer anymore). Also, the game's pretty mod-friendly. All you need is some very basic knowledge, and you can do stuff like change the character models and voices for single player. There's also a boatload of awesome custom levels for single player.

I used to LOVE these games.
Its a shame they're only on the MAC.

Having said that, now someone will post back saying "What? No, its on the PC too!"

Ok, so I'm off to check the internet for a PC version...
