You aren't supposed to be rooting for both factions generally. For an MMORPG, sure, because you want players to want to be either side. In Star Wars in general though, it's as evilthecat says, you're not supposed to be rooting for the Empire. The hero is usually the underdog because it's not very entertaining to see the hero beat up someone they're stronger than, you want there to be struggle. And the Republic are supposed to be the good guys

Say what you will about SWTOR as a game, but as a Star Wars thing, I believe it truly captures the concept of Star Wars better than most things.

And its all to do with the with the factions at play here, the Great Galactic Republic vs the Evil Sith Empire.
That's not the concept of Star Wars. It was supposed to be a simple, classical adventure story of good and evil and the life force that's believed to exist by many cultures. The Civil War was just the backdrop, which is why the heroes were seldom with the Rebels. If you want a war story from the main series, search elsewhere.

I understand why Mark Hamill was hesitant about the sequels. The trilogy had a beginning, middle and end. Luke's journey to becoming a Jedi encapsulates everything that is Star Wars. And as he said, they weren't gonna be able to hit lightning twice or however the saying goes.
But when the title is "Star Wars" I wanna see more the War and not the Adventure.

I like a good balance of both. That said, Star Wars should never, ever forget the 'WW2 in space' element. All the Knights and laser swords exposure has had a brimful. More daring raids and death defying dogfights please, and not the Rogue Squadron arcade style attempts we saw in TFA.
