This thread needs more photos of the crazy bugs SWG used to have. Like when they forgot to put a limit to how tall you could make your character, so cities literally had giant level 1's running around.
Shame they don't have anything on google for that... I laughed at the thought of seeing that... hahah... I would shit myself, being an Imp, seeing a gigantic rebel running through Correlia. hahaha

I'm going to say it here and now.

The New Game Experience was much better then the old version. The old Star Wars Galaxies gave new and frightening meaning to the word "Grind." You had to sell your soul just to move up the social ladder from maggot to insect. The wonderful thing about a good MMO is that it will make you feel important in a certain group or standing. For example, in that other MMO after a while you become very important to your faction and even be called on by your faction leader to kill gigantic monsters x, y and z.

However, Age of Conan made the cardinal mistake of making everyone feel as if they were the BEST THING IN THE ENTIRE WORLD. Star Wars Galaxies in the olden times was the exact opposite of that. You are a pissant not good enough to lick the dirt outside the cantina that Obi-Wan Kenobi walked on. To move on up to something ideal like I described about Warcraft, I.E. Important to a select few, you had to sell your soul in one of the most unholy grind-fests ever to not belong in a Free Korean Grind MMO.

Star Wars Galaxies is still boring however as much of the grind is still intact. However now you feel like the shit since you know Han Solo. The story has gone ten miles past totally fucked as everyone and their dog has been saved by Han and Chewy. And that whole "Jedi Purge" didn't seem to take because everyone can be a Jedi and now their all fearlessly showing off their lightsabers and having flashy duels in Tatooine.

There is a middle ground, however, a lovely combination of that important feeling yet not too important, a modest grind, and a genuine since of feeling remotely powerful. City of Heroes did this very well, infact if the community didn't completely suck i'd be playing that right now. So yes, Star Wars Galaxies DOES suck, just not as badly as it did before.

I'm hoping The Old Republic will be awesome.

(Who the fuck wanted to use melee weapons or carbine blasters anyways? I also want to know who exactly played as a crafter, I was always peeved at having to craft on other MMO's I can't imagine building an entire game off of it.)

I may have to find pictures of the Wompa Rats outside of Mos Espa now. *laughs*

and your right about people crafting, i couldn't get my head around why anyone would want to grind and make items. Miners in EvE are another example of something so boring i would indeed want to be drunk all the time to do.

But i am looking forward to the new SW:TOR game, and maybe I need to have a little faith in what Bioware are doing. All the reports i've seen coming from the MMORPG Report and the developer diaries look good

With the release of the new trailer, maybe just maybe all my worries are completely unfounded

Bioware has a good track record, infact one of the best track records. So I have faith that they will do a good job.

Mine aren't. I'm seriously worried. They had some really interesting gameplay footage on their site [http://swtor.com] awhile back, but they haven't put anything else out... and it's been two, three months. I thought they'd have something more than a (admittedly well-crafted) cinematic.

I am really looking forward to this, i'm just scared they are going to balls it up. I have faith in bioware though. I also hope you dont get a lightsber straight away, and i want some of the traditional classes like smuggler to be in there as well as a madalorian class. A mandalorian jedi would be epic

Galaxies had alot of faults, but its greates asset was the crafting system. The best items all came from people who had spent the time searching for the best resources and combinations. I actually found the resource hunting kinda fun. And I even played before the advent of vehicles. I had heard that the CU really killed the game, but from what I remember the game was circling the tube before the update was implemented.
It was, kinda.

It had no Endgame, to be precise. There was a bleeding of the Fanbase before te infamous Update that I can't recall the Acronym of...

Then the update went live, and it went downhill from there.

Trust in the fact that it will be trying to appeal to the WoW crowd. No MMO in development or creation or beta right now is NOT trying to get some of that pie.

The most worrying thing that I've seen about the Old Republic MMO is, well it's not KOTOR3. I loved both 1 and 2 but I simply don't give a shit about MMOs, they're just not my thing, which is fine but I really want to play another genuine KOTOR game. I actually want to find out the rest of the story of Revan, what was he/she up to and why he/she buggered off beyond the edge of the galaxy. I just hope that Bioshock hasn't given up on the Knighted side of the Old Republic franchise. Actually, has anything been mentioned about the potential for another KOTOR, or are they just focusing on the MMO now?

Bioware usually does a pretty good job on their games, and I haven't played any that I haven't liked, so I don't see any reason to get really negative.

Don't know if I'll pick it up to be honest. I used to be a total SW freak, and after my time in Azeroth, I'm not sure I can pick up another MMO.

But it's been interesting enough to keep some inconsistent attention.

The NGE killed SW:G faster than "Meesa Jar Jar Binks"

The ghost towns of pre-NGE players is truly devastating to behold.

And TBH, I can't see them doing any better. See here [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/issues/issue_101/560-Blowing-Up-Galaxies].

Add a quote from this other article [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/7.74826] "We also realized what players expect from an online Star Wars game - they expect to be that iconic Star Wars hero as soon as possible. They don't want to play for hundreds of hours just to become a Jedi."

Hundreds of Jedi, just outside the starting point. Save your money.

It won't be an issue this time around Because of several reasons:

It's in a time where Jedi are more Plentiful (Not right after they've all been purged...)

The once long, arduous questline to become a Jedi was reduced to "Click here for Lightsaberz" after the NGE. This game won't suffer from that.

Hundreds of Jedi. No traders that don't deal in Jedi stuff. Level 1 Jedis force-lightning groups of mobs. If it's any different to that, I'll be amazed.

No MMO can start you as an icon. You don't get to be an X-Man the second you leap into Superhero game.

Why not? Shaman are Iconic in the Warcraft Universe, and they were available off the top.

Making Jedi available in a time where Jedi are abundant makes sense. It didn't make sense in SWG because it was shortly after the Great Jedi Purge.

"Jedi are useless without the force. Take away the force and watch as one tries to hold a blaster. You'll see nothing more than a man, a woman, a child. In many ways Jedi are less capable than ordinary people. They need the force, they depend on it. In some ways even a wretched worm like you are more capable than her." -Kreia (Paraphrased)

I'm going to be a Bounty Hunter. Not much a Jedi can do to stop me if he never sees me coming. ;P

I tried out SWG at the behest of a friend ( this was after w/e the hell sony did to it) I played for 3 hours, flew my ship far enough out that I actually ran into the planet you can see from the starting space station. I must say I was quite dissapointed I couldn't just fly through the atmosphere and land. I rolled a bounty hunter (it was hard to resist jedi) hoping to be a badass with a jet pack and dual pistols. Unfortunately the starting zone did not pull me in enough to think the game was worth playing at all, so I shut it off and did other things.

I'll be trying this one of course, but my expectations aren't very high.

EDIT
I just read that article Root put up a link to and all I can say is....my god, I was never part of that community and my heart weeps for those people; for that game. Never have I heard a tale of such promise and potential only for it to shot down by an ignorant man and his group of peons. From reading that I can't help but feel that indirectly at least WoW was a cause of SWG's demise. I mean the people saying farewell to their pets on the eve before the NGE, I could never imagine being told after tomorrow my hunter and pets I've played with for 3 years would be gone.

To all former SWG players out there, well there's just no words to describe the sorrow and anger you must have gone through.

It all sounds fine to me, I mean, there is a middle ground of making you feel important without being too important, I touched on this in my previous post. City of Heroes is a prime example of the right amount of power, mixed with the right amount of importance.

Back in the old republic days there WERE hundreds of Jedi spewing force lightning.

Also I doubt that Jedi/Sith will be overpowered, I mean, look back at KOTOR 2, Atton Rand killed a lot of Jedi and ther was absolutely nothing special about him.
