Starbound Sells One Million Copies While Still In Beta

The upcoming indie game hits big, despite being out for only a month.

It's official: beta is the new 1.0. Between the success of Minecraft and Steam's Early Access program, people are totally cool with buying an unfinished game, as long as the company's [a href=http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/130276-Battlefield-4-Drives-Down-Electronic-Arts-Share-Price]upfront about[/a] it. Now, the sci-fi RPG/sandbox game Starbound has already sold one million copies, despite not having officially launched yet, or even being out for very long.

Since December 4th, players can get early access to Starbound on Steam for $15, the normal price of the game. Long before that, the developer, Chucklefish, was selling pre-order bundles on its own website. Similar to a Kickstarter campaign, prospective players could either pre-order the game at its normal price, or donate more cash, with tiers extended upwards of $2000. Using this method alone, it raised more than $5 million dollars. Once you factor in the huge number of copies sold on Steam, Starbound has already made more cash before launch than most indie games can ever hope to raise over a lifetime.

If for some reason you're not counted among those one million, Starbound is a sci-fi RPG with lots of exploration and crafting. Think Terraria in space, but with a storyline. If that piques your interest, you can still hop onto the bandwagon, either via [a href=http://store.steampowered.com/app/211820/]Steam[/a], or [a href=http://playstarbound.com/store/]Chucklefish's website[/a]. After all, there are always more stretch goals to hit!

Starbound doesn't have a set release date yet, but you can expect word to come as it slowly evolves towards a more finished state.

It's not in beta, it's in Alpha as character wipes are still expected and not all the mechanics are in.

They sold the limited 1000 keys in 2 minutes in the Humble Bundle by simply making it 5$ cheaper.

I somehow feel that people should have a bit more patience in waiting for the full thing to come out, the only game I bought in alpha/beta was Minecraft and even though I enjoyed it I got tired of it after a while (still a long time) and havent even played the full version yet (I know that there is some dragon and that hell universe or some shit but the novelty has already worn off).

Maybe you should try mods? There's some really game changing ones out there :) (Not to mention playing it with friends is a ton of fun)

Good for them. I got it during the Steam Sale so I got some snowglobes along with it.

It is officially in Beta. No question about it.
There are no hard definitions or limits for what an "Alpha" or "Beta" is (they're just informal jargon).
I've played "alphas" that play very close to the end product and "Betas" that really weren't ready for anyone.
(Hell, I've played released games that weren't ready for anything or anyone. Lookin' at you, Daikatana.)

But yes, it's still a very early "beta" and not yet finished. Character wipes should be a thing of the past soon if not already, but many more features need to be implemented before the Beta is finished.

It's beta and it shows.

While it's a LOT of fun, it still feels like it's missing a few essential things. For example, the ability to set new checkpoints on planets. I found a wonderful little village of my own people (Grounded Avians, in case you were wondering, and the first non-hostile civilization I'd encountered thus far) and...Realized that I couldn't make it my home since it was a good 7 minutes of running from the teleport point on that world, making it really inconvenient to make my home in.

But still, despite it lacking a lot of key features, it's a lot of fun, and I really want to see where it goes. :)

Haha, if you check the steam community pages and forums, you'll see that even with the developer being very explicit about the current expectations of the game (being in alpha/beta), there are a lot of people complaining about it being incomplete or a waste of money.
