I'm mostly a console gamer, but recently I've been getting into PC games. If I have a 2-year old PC running XP, what's the best way for me to buy/get (legally) a copy of Starcraft? Am I stuck with digital download, or will the hard copy versions (made in about 1999) still work on newer systems? Will I have to do a ton of messing around to get them to work?
I have several orginal CD's of Starcraft (due to co-hosting LANs and cheap store prices) and they all work fine.
I haven't heard from anyone that they had troubles with running Starcraft - on any PC system (recent (Vista) or old built ones (98, XP)... haven't tried 7 yet, but shouldn't be a problem). So you with your two-year-old-machine you should be fine.

As for the hardcopy of the game, you can probably get one on a online-auction site, but also at online-warehouses (mostly known for books) generally still have it in their assortment (right now you can get the battle-chest for 18 bucks).
Thanks. I was planning to buy new hard copy from an online website but wanted to check around first to see if there were compatibility issues. Apparently not.

I'll probably need to wait 'till after Christmas to pick it up, though. Not such a good idea for me to buy myself gifts 15 days before Christmas. I believe December 26th is the official "get yourself what you really wanted" day.

The problem that Blizzard will face, once they release the game, is that the standards against which it will be held will be unbelievable high.

You thought Duke Nukem would have been in a tough spot, if it had come out? You think Half Life 2: episode 3, let alone Half Life 3 will be held against high standards?

Compared to Starcraft II, every other developer can look forward to a delayed release date - no other game needs to be as excellent (and more optimized) as its predecessor. No other game had such a big influence on professional gaming. CS:Source is meaningless compared to SCII.

If Blizzard waits another half a year after that (as mentioned before by Marq, just in time for the next christmas-spree) it will have to be perfect. And there is no perfect game. Because if there were such a thing, then it would please every gamer and their grandpas... And something like that simply cannot be.

(And before anyone tries to convince us that their favorite game is perfect - it's not. There are at least 10 users here who will disagree (and thousands more worldwide to back them up in their opinion), and say that they dislike whichever game you mention.)
