So I was having a discussion with some long-time friends going back to the days of elementary school and such, and all the things we remembered from the days of yore.

One of my friends mentioned all of the typing programs we had to do- to learn with the home row and all that malarkey.
And I remembered that I always hated those because I felt like I already knew it.

And that was when it struck me, I didnt learn typing from some program or being taught to.
I learned how to type playing StarCraft on motherfucking Battle.net, man... probably the best time to show that a game can really help you out.

Just wondering if any other of you guys out there claim learning valuable lessons from a game/gaming experience

I never did any of those stupid writing exercises in school (got two years in computing instead of business management) so yeah, same boat, picked up typing from gaming online, probably playing Diablo 2 ;D never get tired of that game.

I am astonished that you can type as well as you do, considering the genesis of your skills.

I think that team shooting games have taught me some good leadership/communication skills.

Dealing with faceless people in a team can be more challenging than talking to those you know, so it's a good way to learn how to persuade people to follow you (though, you need to consider the fact that the individuals will differ depending on the medium).

Communication-wise, I think I learned how to get something across faster, which really helps with holding conversations. I use to be a bit of an explanation merchant, trying to speak long monologues to get to the point. Now, I can cut out the needless information faster. That's not just games at work, though, but my writing major.

Learned Greek mythology from God of War :D
Learned all about rifles from COD, I went to a gun show with my Dad and frankly, he was amazed at my ability to name every gun at the whole damn show.

I went to middle school at various international schools in Asia. Half my friends were ESL and their English skills probably advanced more through playing Magic: the Gathering at lunchtime then actually paying attention in class.

Quick lesson young ones. Typing is what you do on a typewriter, keyboarding is what you do on a computer ;)

I learned how to KEY by playing Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry

Surprisingly, I did the same. The people I played with were hardcore grammar and spelling Nazis. Being in their presence kept me from falling down the dark path of 1337 speak.

This is weird. I was in a typing class in elementary school, typing about my day, when my friend saw me typing about how I play Warcraft 2. He told me to get Starcraft since it's newer.
So basically learned about Starcraft while typing (the opposite of what happened with you).

Bwuahahahaha Fixed :) *j/k*

Well I've learned how to type from video games as well, primarily my left hand as that's my WASD keys, my right hand suffers but is stronger from *ahem* other things, so it can reach onto keys that my WASD hand doesn't normally reach :)

As to learned... Probably squad tactics, so when the zombie apocalypse comes I BETTER be in your squad :D ... or carry ammo what ever floats your boat.

Is it weird that playing RPG's like FFVII taught me how to read?

I guess that translates into 'key'ing somewhere along the line.. I actually improved my skill(z) by spending a ridiculous amount of hours on a freewebs chat run by one of my friends. It was only around five people, but it was definitely what helped a lot.

I did the same thing back when I used to play Runescape.

As it turns out, typing things like "Green:Wave:Selling 1k flax 100k" over and over agian, really helps you memorise key positions.

It obviously didn't teach grammar, as it should be 'StarCraft taught me HOW to type'

/grazi-mode

Okay, back on topic. I see that I'm not the only one on here who learnt left and right from L and R on a controller.
