Well, I'm actually dyslexic, so my spelling and grammar was, well, suffice it to say flawed before I came across the internet. When I started going onto forums, using word documents and joining RP circles, I got a lot more practice with writing than I'd ever had before, and I was able to read well-written posts and learn from them. Also, I guess as I was more exposed to the internet, I got a sense for post-structure that bothered me, and developed a sense of what was and wasn't a good paragraph. It was the best place for me to practice and overcome my dyslexia.

This. We also had to do those stupid typing programs. I always blew away the teachers with my 100+ WPM while everyone else was crawling at 25 WPM.

The funny thing is though, I hate the use of homerow. I don't use it, I just find the keyes on the keyboard. I memorized the locations, my hands just fly across the keyboard, picking away at a lightning speed.

Edit:

Seems like the internet and video games have helped improve the literacy skills of most people.

Suck that! Stupid "THINK OF THE CHILDREN!" nay-sayers!

I'm exactly the same way.
I usually don't even rest my hands on the keyboard, and when I'm typing, it's an active motion - hands and arms, to a lesser degree, move.

That homerow bullshit can bite me.
My way is better.
Amen! Or maybe Ohrah! How about Yes Sir!

Take your pick.

On a similiar note, Tie Fighter taught me to type. That game had almost the entire damn keyboard mapped to something. Over time I didn't have to look at what keys I was hitting just out of sheer necessity and when I finally had to take a typing class in school, I was way ahead of everyone else.

Video games may not have taught me much about typing but it did insane things to my grammar and reading capabilities. Now even if its a word I hardly know I can spell it out pretty accurately. I still mess up though. In fact I didn't start with the fragmented words used nowadays, I had to learn those.

You can learn more from old games though. The original Halo taught me that standing out in the open will get you killed. A better word would be destroyed. Starcraft taught me why go around when you can just fly there. The wonders of video games.

I am astonished that you can type as well as you do, considering the genesis of your skills.

I think that team shooting games have taught me some good leadership/communication skills.

Dealing with faceless people in a team can be more challenging than talking to those you know, so it's a good way to learn how to persuade people to follow you (though, you need to consider the fact that the individuals will differ depending on the medium).

Communication-wise, I think I learned how to get something across faster, which really helps with holding conversations. I use to be a bit of an explanation merchant, trying to speak long monologues to get to the point. Now, I can cut out the needless information faster. That's not just games at work, though, but my writing major.
haha, I guess I should say that I learned how to type quickly from StarCraft on Battle.net... the whole basics and learning my way around the keyboard itself and knowing how to respond quickly to people.

typing- content wise and learning how to convey things to other people is something that I learned from writing and advanced classes and college level classes, and well... college probably, too (maybe).

But I just love the fact that really, I would have still been using the home row if not for StarCraft. And probably type slower (?) though Im sure Id just adapt to whatever was thrown at me

Quick lesson young ones. Typing is what you do on a typewriter, keyboarding is what you do on a computer ;)

I learned how to KEY by playing Police Quest and Leisure Suit Larry

I learnt to type mostly from copying the entirety of the novel "Grendel" (by John Gardner) into my computer. That's... totally normal, right?

I was the same way. I tried typing programs but none of them ever worked for me. Then I started visiting forums and now I can type about as fast as I can think. A bit slower, if I don't want a bunch of typos in my work.
