What makes them fun, exactly? I enjoyed them because I could turtle, make a nice little base with all the supply structures arranged all Sim Cityesque and then steamroll the AI with whatever was the most powerful unit I had at the time. When it got time to playing SC2, I found myself rather pissed off for like half the missions being on a timer and not being able to watch the kill count on my siege tanks go up.

But is that true for everyone else?

Where did your jollies come from when playing a Blizzard RTS?

And this is Blizzard RTS specific. I did not play Command and Conquer.

Bloody hate turtling, makes every match the same.

I enjoyed DoWII campaigns more, along with Tales of Valour expansion of Company of Heroes. Like having verity in my campaigns, if I just wanted to turtle and watch a number kill number go up I'd play against the A.I in a custom game seeing as an objective wouldn't mean squat.

I liked the story of the campaigns, but I really didn't like playing a lot of them. I find dueling the CPU in RTS games to be extremely dull, mostly because turtling works so well. My favorite missions were actually the ones that were on a timer, or had a win condition beyond "kill the enemy". They actually made you think and act, rather than just letting the game play itself.

My favorite RTS campaigns are still Dawn of War II (and expansions) and Company of Heroes. The story might not be as good as Warcraft/Starcraft, but they are much more exciting to play, and actually teach you good fundamentals for playing online. If you take what you learn in the Starcraft campaign online, you'll just get stomped.

I knew specifically that someone would post something in complete contrast to the title so I added not one, but two extra layers of "please read the title." Yeah, I know I specified Command and Conquer. That does not remove the significance of the prior points.

Thank you.

Yeah, I wondered why Blizzard didn't bother making the campaign a big lesson in macro, micro and mechanical skill.

I personally hated the timer missions. They totally screwed with any sense of fun I could have made with the game. Now don't get me wrong, timers were great in Brood War, but they wheel them out like every other mission in one form or another. It gets really tiring when I don't get to explore the possibilities of unit mixes against particular setups or take and fortify a position or learn how to use the starting units to clear out a full enemy base or pull shit like this [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ToGkxNqrJ_4].

I never really liked SC. Too fucking imbalanced.
WC3 was fun though. Mainly because each race was kinda different but still familiar and the heroes just made it fun.
However my fave RTS has to be Dawn of War. Every race feels completely different and requires different tactics.

I admit, I cheated my way through the WC3 campaigns....

Gimme a break, I was only 10-ish when I played them XD

The only thing that kept me going was the story, otherwise I found the gameplay too hard..

I still go back and play Warcraft 3 every now and then. Usually when I start to hate WoW, I'll load Warcraft 3 up and get my love for the lore and world back.

Starcraft 2 is the only recent game I can remember that I actually played for like 3 days straight because the campaign was THAT good. I loved the story and I loved the way it played out. I suck at online games though :( Give me a dumb Computer opponent any day!

I fell in love with WC3's story. Cairne was such an awesome guy, and Uther was a badass. And then the fact you play as Arthas as a full half the game. Really felt sorry for the guy, and how he turned out.

So i guess it was the characters mostly for me.

Take out that one line of heresy where I dare to mention another game and the comment is still valid.

Cheers.

Loved the WarcraftIII story.
A shame Blizzard understood that MMORPG of Warcraft would bring in so much money that we didn't get a Warcraft IV :,(
