first, a dragon was probably just to be kickass because pokemon was new and needed a cool thing to bring in people.

And anyway, this might suprrise someone, but zodiac animals are very common and everyone knows these animals. Everyone instantly recognizes these animals and are embedded in way more cultures than china. To use common animals as fire pokemon doesn't really mean anything.

putting a little too much analysis into this eh?
Not really. That one guy who theorized that the pokemon anime series is all just ash's mind in a coma did the over analysis.
Or the ones who got bored enough to figure out the pokeball catching formula.

I forget where I saw it but it was HUGE and unnecessarily complicated. I always wondered if there was a formula but upon seeing it you're like.. "LOL WHAT? It's THAT in depth!?"

But Charmander was more of a Salamander, although Charizard did always seem Dragon-ish...
Charmander - Salamander
Charmeleon - Chameleon
Charizard - Lizard

Just put Char at the beginning and presto, we have the first fire starter and it's evolutions!

Hey. Honestly, seems fairly pointless, considering you can catch just about everything by beating it into the red, then sleeping it, then applying balls-er.. pokeball. Wow.. that sentence was a creepy ass innuendo.

The grass starters are always dinosaurs, and the water are.. aquatic animals? Turtle, croc, ...mudkip? What's mudkip supposed to be?

Loving the Pratchett reference! And yeah, that is odd. Although debatable in how intentional it is. Plus I'm not entirely sure what Cyndaquil is - Typhlosion sure as hell isn't a mouse/rat. Giant fire-ferret, maybe.

It's not that bad. It basically boils down to - Lugia, with one HP left, whilst paralysed, and using Ultra balls? You still only have a 5% chance of catching it with each ball... You'll pretty much always catch a Caterpie, regardless of its level or what you use to catch it.

What? I study physics/maths. I'm used to messing around with complicated looking equations, and I was really, really bored...

EDIT: It's also in the post above mine.

Youre either thinking about it too much and its just coincedence, or youve noticed something very impressive. Id never even thoughgt about that before.

Im leaning to the second option.

Yay, someone on here knows of the Pratchett :)

As for Cyndaquil, once in for all: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Cyndaquil_(Pok%C3%A9mon)

Check the species.

Now do I think he's very ratty/mousy? No, but the theory hangs on that technicality. If it's wrong, then I'm wrong.
