I liked what Arkham Asylum managed to do with stealth, advanced simplicity :)

I wish Assassin's Creed could come through for me on this idea of hiding in plain sight. Thats what disguises are used for anyway. Walking around in a garment like Ezio or Altair does, kinda takes away the whole "I'm a super assassin" mentality for me. They're still awesome games, but when I just killed 5 guys and some other guard runs over while I'm walking away calmly in some ridiculous outfit, they won't even question me? Its kinda silly.
Give them a chance...

I'll repeat this again, games do not have to be realistic in order to be good. So if you think it's silly, that's just the direction they're takingthe game in.

I agree, but not about Altair. Apart for the daggers and the sword, he looked almost exactly like the monks when he'd blend. That's what made it believable, but Ezio just looked gaudy, and I really hated his clothes. Even Altair's armour looked like something that Altair would never be caught dead in.

I am a huge stealth fan and my friends know it. They sometimes try to convince me to play a game by telling me it has a stealth aspect in it.

I played the hell out of most of the Splinter Cell and Hitman franchises. Although it always made me giggle in hitman when you'd be in disguise in a non caucasian level. Seriously how the hell does the 6 ft tall bald guy with a bar code on the back of his head fit in in freaking Malaysia or a drug den run exclusively by black guys?

My best stealth game is Stolen. You have to be really crafty in this game to get points and it can get pretty awkward.

Yeah I always wondered where 47's amazing ability to blend in anywhere come from... Maybe he's so obscure that he becomes invisible.

Stealth is to not be seen. If you're in a disguise, you're still being seen.
There is a difference between looking and seeing.

We look at loads of things but only "see" what catches our attention. A guard may look directly at a sniper in ghilli suit but only "see" a bit of shrubbery, similar applies when Agent 47 steals the clothes off a guard to walk through the front gate of a maximum security facility.

But I see what you're getting at, push it too far and you don't have a stealth game you have a complex RPG of acting out roles of whoever you are impersonating.

There is that primeval sense of satisfaction sneaking past or "infiltrating" an enemy stronghold which I think the best stealth games are able to harness.

I suck at most stealth games and don't really play them anymore. The only one that I can think of offhand that I liked was playing Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines as a Nosferatu. For some reason I loved that experience even though it makes a lot of the game quite difficult if not impossible to access.

Also, the light meter and attention meter in that game were awesome and actually let you know how close to being seen you were.

I always like playing as a assassin type character in Oblivion. It's fun using spells that make my enemies fight each other and just watching in the shadows as they beat the living piss out of there once friends. Good times man, good times.
Haha that's pure gold, I never actually thought of trying that!

Chaos Theory is the greatest stealth game made in my opinion.
Although I never gave the Thief series a proper playthrough. Whilst I love Metal Gear Solid, it's far too easy to let your play style fall into all out action. Hitman is also good.
I suppose what I'm trying to say is that there simply aren't enough stealth games.

either they are brilliant, (and i have yet to find one of these) or boring, shooters can keep get exciting, thrillers can get jumpy, but stealth games are too stodgy and slow to be interesting.

don't get me wrong im not a twitchy FPS sadist, i enjoyed hitman and other similar games where slowly achieveing a goal is the best way of achieving the goal, but even so i don#t want to be punished too severly if i just decide "fuck it" and whip out the BFG9,000,000.

Hitman: Blood Money was an excellent game. One of my favourites.
I recently picked this game up and loved every minute of it. Would love for a large, more in-depth game like this.

Can someone give me an honest ranking of the thief games, from a 'how well they did stealth' point of view? I want to get into them but aren't sure whether to start with 1 or just go for the best.

They actually will harrass/attack you depending on whether or not your Infamous. If they see you nearby they'll come over and start pushing you around saying how "you were here the whole time" etc. etc. It's easy to get a lost in a crowd, so as long as you quickly make a getaway, they won't notice you. We're talking renaisaince italy, everyone is suppose to look odd.

OT: I really liked Splinter Cell:DA and Assassin's Creed myself. But honestly the best stealth game ever is probably Thief: Deadly Shadows. That was a true honest shadow sneaking game. Thing with MGS is that in lighter difficulty it's easier to plow your way through it, sneaking has no real value. In higher difficulties, it's harder then Hell to hide, so you get the opposite. Only the sneaking is still piss hard. Though they did fix it a bit in MGS4. The system in MGS3 was tedious as Hell.
No, no, I understand that. Its just that most of the time, its so blatantly obvious that you just killed someone that it breaks the immersion every once in a while.

In my opinion, its the other way around. Altair looked like the fool. Sure, his outfit was more simple than Ezio's, but Altair was also in a far simpler time. Everyone looked like a vagrant and Altair stuck out like a sore thumb, especially in the monks.

I didn't say the game had to be realistic in any way. I could be running around in a clown suit for all I cared, but only if I was placed in a circus. I don't understand why they seem to believe that wearing some Assassin garb is going to attract less attention than wearing some simple beggar's clothes?
