Steam Begins Treasure Hunt for Free Games and Team Fortress 2 Hats

The Great Steam Treasure Hunt has begun, which tasks users to complete objectives to win free games.

Through December 20, Valve is running a fun Steam promotion that will see many users awarded with free games, and maybe even special Team Fortress 2 hats. The Great Steam Treasure Hunt gives users specific objectives and their completion awards entries into various contests, while certain games associated with the hunt are going on sale too.

For the main treasure hunt, Valve is releasing four new objectives every 48 hours until December 20. Completing an objective will earn a Steam user an entry into a drawing to win 5 games from his/her wishlist, with 20 winners every two days. Finishing 10 total objectives by December 20 and then logging in sometime on that day will enter a user into a drawing to win 100 Steam games of their choosing, with 3 total winners.

Just to make things a little more fun, Valve has thrown in a side-promotion that gives away Team Fortress 2 [http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000PS2XES/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_3?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B00002S9ZV&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=13ZE4EJ6NVMTNM07BAMM] hats. Completing 5 objectives unlocks a Bounty hat in the game, completing 15 unlocks a Treasure hat, and completing 28, which is every single objective, unlocks the Hat of Undeniable Wealth.

Valve says there's "no purchase necessary" to win, but it looks like you'll have to make at least a purchase or ten to enter the bigger contest and hat quest. One of the first four objectives is to simply upload a Steam avatar, but the rest require the ownership of three specific games. They ask users to become a Desert Fox in Chime [http://store.steampowered.com/app/21970/]. Future tasks are also likely to involve games.

Thankfully, these games are currently on sale for as much as 75% off. The Great Steam Treasure Hunt is way more clever than just a simple sale, and should be a good lead-in to an upcoming Steam holiday promotion that is hopefully on its way.

Also, if already have the achievement in question (or have already done the task, e.g. already have an avatar on your profile) then log in to ensure you get the objective complete. Also, for each individual objective, 5 people who complete it will win 5 games. (Assuming you have 10 games in your Wishlist, of course)

Valve are god damn genius level crazy. If they ever go evil and try to take over the world no amount of Gordon Freemans, James Bonds, Commander Shepards, Nathan Drakes, Master Chiefs, or Gears will be able to stop them.

Once again I find myself torn...

My beloved wife Valve has treated me good for years - but now she blackmails me and only offers me favours if I buy her a new sports car every few days...

I love her and the good times we've had - but it may be time to take her out back and shoot her in the head...

Right after I buy her that new sports car - DAMN my addictions!

Also, for TF2 hat purposes, the time limit is end of business on the 20th to get all of the objectives. Source [http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showpost.php?p=19265346&postcount=9]. Of course, if you miss the slot, then you won't get a entry into that specific prize draw.

Total spent so far: $1.75 (Shamus Young's recommendation of Chime carried some weight)
Total points so far: 2.
I'm hoping (of course!) that I'll get some free games. 5 would be wonderful, 100 would be dreams-come-true! But in the meantime... sales! Wonderful, wonderful sales!

Oh, disappointment.

I don't want to buy a game just to get a treasure point for the rare chance that I'll actually get 5 games on my wishlist.

For both those games you can get them from buyers in SourceOP for about three refined (you'd only need 2 reclaimed for just chime)

Which is pretty reasonable.
