Steam causing me to loose sanity.

I have been trying over 3 hours to get the "wonderful steam" to function on my computer. I have tried every single "fix" on their site to no avail. I have never used it before so perhaps I'm just mildly retarded. I don't exactly have a comlicated setup. I have windows 7, norton 360 and a tiny motorola dsl router with 2 computers hooked to it. I have set norotn to allow steam access to all ports, I have set the router to allow accestt to all the ports that Valve says are required, I have tried hooking only the one computer to the dsl router and it still continues to just say "Unable to connect to steam network, please try again later" According to their site the network is up and available. Any ideas? I have emailed them about the problem, but I find sometimes the gamers that use such software know quicker was around these problems.

Yeah, I also suggest temporarily disabling Norton all together for a brief period of time, to see if it is still playing funny beggars. It's not uncommon for certain security suites to function incorrectly, even after being told to leave certain programs well alone.

I don't remember configuring my router for steam, though I do have UPnP on.

I think disabling Norton could be a solution.

Your sanity is coming loose? Tighten that shit up!

OT: Sometime there servers are just down (although I barely have problems). Just be patient, and, as previously stated, diable Norton.

Probably Norton tbh, though steam does take some time to start up.

Offtopic, get rid of Norton, seriously, get something like AVG, anything but Norton. o_O

Initial Steam startup always seems to take quite a while. Though Norton is (IMO) a primary suspect here.. not trying to talk down on it.. its just.. I don't know. Bloated and unreliable. However everyone is fit to use whatever security suite they want. And since I am going way off topic here..
..I'd just like to side with what the others have said. That, and be patient. Initial start up of Steam takes a while as it might update and you might not even notice.

How long have you waited for it to finish whatever it is you want it to do?

While disabling Norton is a good idea to see if it is the problem, remember to never leave your computer without an anti-virus program.

Norton has a pretty bad rep, in that it is resource intensive, slightly over-protective and doesn't do a better job than the free anti virus programs.

Try avast or AVG if you're thinking of changing.

If you think Steam is a problem, you are going to LOVE Games for Windows Live!

/sarcasm

but seriously, sounds like Norton is your problem here.

I've had a terrible experience with the latest version of AVG (it alt-tabbed me out of my games periodically when it was doing the "check for updates;" "periodically" meant "every five minutes.") I use avast! and SuperAntiSpyware.

Do you have virtual LAN programs like Hamachi installed? If so, disable their network connections.

I had a similar problem after installing LogOn Hamachi to play Titan Quest with a friend (since Gamespy is the worst online service in existence). Disabled it, and Steam ran fine.

Steam can be a little fickle, but trust me: It's well worth it. Not only for the deals, but also for the updates and general community.

First things first, get rid of Norton. Terrible piece of bloated, intrusive software. Replace it with a free alternative (Microsoft Security Essentials) then try Steam.

Perhaps your computer just doesn't like that install you have for steam. Perhaps look for an alternate download or an older version and update it?
Norton is likely your problem, but I promise you, you've never gone through Steam Hell until you try to install it on a Mac...
In October of last year, before Steam for Mac was announced.

All the Symantec/Norton products cause problems with Steam. Be careful you get rid of it entirely. Norton tends to like to wrap tentacles around your computer and not let go. You can get an exe from Symantec called NoNav that will remove all traces of it. I also ensure that any machines I run NoNav.exe on are unplugged from the network. For some reason, Norton resists the removal if it can access the internet.

Going to jump on the "sounds like norton" bandwagon. Little about Norton is worthwhile and Steam is about the most painless thing to set up ever.

I think most everyone here is right, it's probably Norton. From what little I've used Norton, it seems to have a "yeah, uh huh, whatever." attitude when you tell it to do something, and it Bogarts files when you need them screaming at you that it's being opened when that's exactly what you wanted.

Whether you find that Norton is your immediate problem with not being able to use Steam or that it something else, there's plenty of us here that can recommend good subscription based and free for personal (non-corporate) use anti-virus/spyware and firewall programs, that are a better alternative to Norton.

Btw, I'm not sure how well you can truly disable Norton. I found when trying to delete Norton (after so much angst with it) that when I thought it was gone and my problems (with it) were over, I later noticed that it had spawned little "buy me, buy me" programs at some point to get you to reinstall it.

But, all-in-all, let us know how it goes.

Odd...

I use Norton with Steam but I can play on a Windows 7 TF2 game...

Now I'm interested in a few alternatives.
