So the title says it all, seems Steam set a new high water mark on the 1st by having 8.5 million users online simultaneously. This is a pretty big turnaround from a decade ago where PC gaming was dying, to it now being more widespread then console gaming, even when eliminating browser and social games. I'm honestly pretty happen about this because it could mean the console makers may step up their game in a way that isn't just turning their systems into another home entertainment box that's just a cheap PC with a good UI for the TV.

Edit: woops put this in the off topic section by mistake. Should be in gaming.

That's nice.

Uh......good for Valve for making lots of money?

Kind of like our favorite Nintendo Defense Force user back in the day, I hear a lot of PC gamers talk about "How dead are we now suckas!!!?" and throw imaginary middle fingers to all these people declaring PC gaming is dead but you know what I don't really see?

People declaring PC gaming dead.

Does that happen everywhere else maybe? Are people all over gaming forums declaring PCs as dead and since this is the only gaming forum I cling to, I don't ever get to see that? I don't remember the last time I saw anyone say that PC gaming is dead but I see an awful lot of people saying "SEE! PC GAMING IS NOT DEAD!!!"...

Not so much now, but back in 04-08 it was pretty common to see people calling PC gaming dead due to the dramatic drop in PC gaming between the mid 90s and mid 2000s. A lot of PC gamers haven't let that go, kind of the same way Nintendo fanboys haven't let the fact the company bounced back from third to first place between generations die down.

Really? PC gaming was considered to be dying?

Granted, the games were pretty ugly back then. Lots of dark black and brown. Not much soul to the games. All about shooting generic people in generic environments. But them being "dying" is new to me.

No, people on this site just go on about how a pc is the only way to play games and consoles are terrible.

Don't get me wrong, I game on my pc and consoles. I like them all. Sue me.

Unless you want to play exclusive games like Mario Kart 8.

Consoles are certainly not terrible in every way.

Ukuleles are terrible!

You'd hope Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo would make their digital distribution more competitive with Steam but doesn't seem to be going that way yet.

valve's iron-tight grasp on the PC market grows stronger. Hurray for monopolies!

The exclusives argument doesn't work in consoles favor.

besides that is a terrible reason to buy a platform. There are fantastic games on every platform these days. Not having certain games is not important. you can still have tons of fun without them. The only good reason to buy a platform is because you believe that platform offers an inherently superior experience to the alternatives. No game is so much better than it's competitors that it is worth dropping $3-500 just to play that one game. It is a crutch used by platform makers to avoid having to compete on the actual quality of their machine.

in short, if you believe that the WiiU gamepad/Motion controller offers a compelling gameplay alternative then by all means get a WiiU, but saying you got it because of MK8 is a bit silly. There are TONS of other great racing games out there that offer a great time with friends

You know, Steam's what helped me get into PC gaming again because it was as convenient as consoles. Sure, I still had to keep an eye on the system requirements (laptop was never meant for gaming) but Steam made it really easy to find games that do run on my laughable hardware. When I've found something I like, it'll take maybe a minute to pay and then I'll be downloading, installing and playing. It's super easy and I love it. I'm sure I'd just sites like GoG and Humble too if they offered more payment options like Steam does.

There was a lot of PC Gaming is dead sentiments during the early 2000s, Steam was in its infancy (it came out in 2003 and was a buggy pile of crap) and Microsoft bought out the original Xbox, and a lot less games were coming to PC during that period. Nowadays though you usually only see the PC Gaming is dead thing from Youtube comment trolls and the like.

It also helps that it is now easier than its ever been to get into PC gaming.

Hopefully, this will make more Japanese games come to Steam.
Not terribly likely, considering that PC gaming is incredibly niche in Japan.

Playing that game are we now. Says it all really, though these type of threads are usually a pretty good indication anyway.
You can attempt to appear reasonable all you want, but people will notice those slip ups that betray the illusion.

Hey now Valve are good guys they'll never do that... and they don't have a monopoly anyway who told you that. Forget anything that goes counter to that, a lot of other people have.

Just burying yourself with all that. Gaming is about the games, not the pieces of plastic and metal you use to play them on.

To sum it up you're saying: "I myself don't have access to the consoles and their exclusives... but... that is fine because who needs those games, I don't want to play them anyway...".

The "inherently superior experience" is loaded and very common in those types of posts. You're saying it because you think that as you're talking about PCs far beyond the current consoles (which isn't the norm but I don't need to go there) that your statement is rock solid. The problem is your other statements and "loyalty" weakens it to the point of irrelevance... its quite simply not credible.

The "compete on the actual quality" is rarer though you'll find a couple of folk here who have that stance... though one sadly got recently banned. However as I said to them consoles are not == pre-built PCs. Consoles are purchased with the customer having faith in exclusives being produced specifically for it (or if brought later the exclusives already existing). A pre built PC is just a PC you pay more for like say those fabled Steam Machines everyone was going mad for not that long ago for very odd reasons.

You should try it before you deem it unimportant. Many of the best games are exclusives, being a multiplatform god I know such things trust me. I'm confident you wouldn't be able to name a single game that gives a experience like MK8 on PC as that is seemingly the contest you wish to have.

I honestly have no idea what you're trying to insinuate with that comment. Is it implying I have something against either PC or Nintendo gamers? Because the Wii U is the only current gen console I use and PC is the primary means by which I game.

Being a multiplatform gamer, I laugh uproariously at the folks who argue superiority when its clear the real master race is the people who can game on whatever they want, whenever they want and don't need to declare x, y, or z preference being "dead". I play games, I don't care what it is on as long as I'm having fun. Ya'll should try having fun sometime too, its a great experience instead of comparing epeens.

I don't want to get into the whole console war thing, but for me personally, Sony's and Microsoft's systems have lost their edge by becoming more like PCs. The thing I always liked about consoles was the convenience, but now there seems to be a new update nearly every time I want to play something and here are installs everywhere. Honestly, Steam is more plug & play than that!(Vita is cool, though. Lovely handheld.) Nintendo is about the only one who tries to keep things nice and easy for consumers while making sure their system stood out from the crowd.

Everyone should just get the system(s) they like, but I totally get the people who go for a PC + Wii U. Those are two very different systems and together they cover so many bases it's hard to imagine the owner not being able to find something good to play.

Err Origin has 50 million accounts and has hit 4 million concurrent users. Its not a monopolie
