So, we're a good way into the Winter Steam Sale now, so I really should have posted this a while back. No matter...

Anyhow, for the benefit of the makers of your favourite games and others on this forum, post your recommendations for games people really should get while going cheap this holiday.

I'd like to take this opportunity to plug To The Moon. A glorious little game made in RPG Maker, relatively little gameplay but a brilliant story that will stick with you as long as you live.

How about you?

I got $40 in steam gift cards so for the first time I'm using Steam. I got Baldur's Gate I&II HD remakes, Hotline Miami, Call of Cthulhu, System Shock 2, and FTL for just under $40. I'm just using a medium end laptop so I went for some older games that I missed out on and were cheap.

Gone Home and Brothers are great pick ups. As very story based experiences with little replay value, a lot of people balked at picking them up at full price, but for sale prices they are pretty much no brainers as long as you are open to playing something that is not your typical "videogame." (Gone Home particularly)

Edit:
Forgot about Valdis Story for a recommendation. It's a beautiful looking and sounding (seriously, the music is amazing) indie Metroidvania with a surprising amount of gameplay and an old school Secret of Manaish art style. Challenging tactical combat and multiple playable characters round out the package. Definitely an excellent buy.

Sins of a Solar Empire Rebellion $10 - Hours upon hours of enjoyment. Random every time. A wonderful space RTS. You get all the expansions with Rebellion.

Prison Architect (Early Access) $15 - If you love the idea at designing and running your own prison, GET THIS. It's strangely addicting.

Starbound (Early Access) $15 - Its officially in Beta and there are wipes at the moment but its price is expected to go up soon. Its chalk full of content with plenty more to come. It's basically terraria in space but done much better. It's best with friends. Not saying its not fun alone just exploring around with friends is just my preference. Going from world to world fighting beasts and looting tons of stuff.

Dust: An Elysian Tail. If you have not played Dust, it's currently only $3.74 for the next two days, and it's one of the best action-RPGs I've ever played, possibly even the very best.

Hoo, boy. Too many.

- Torchlight 2
- Sins of a Solar Empire: Trinity / Rebellion
- Terraria
- Super Amazing Wagon Adventure
- Outlast
- Just Cause 2 (now that the multiplayer addon is out)
- Hard Reset
- Lone Survivor
- Deadlight
- FTL

I'll stop there.

All of these[footnote]And then some.[/footnote] I've purchased either for myself or for others, throughout the holiday sale. All of them cheap. And all of them I highly recommend.

I'd seriously recommend Shadow Warrior. I wasn't expecting a whole lot when I got it for the Humble Bundle, but I was still fairly curious. The game turned out to be surprisingly fun, and beautiful to boot. It's pretty easy to dive into as well and plays at a good pace.

If you haven't, now's a great time to try that game you've always wanted to try, but you weren't very sure you'd enjoy it. That game, is obviously Crusader Kings II. You'll find that this game has almost an infinite replay value and the complexity doesn't hinder its fun.

It's just an amazing game, if 4X strategy piques your interest.

The games that I bought this steam sale were:
-Brothers: a tale of two sons
Quite possibly one of the best story driven games I've played thus far. Loved it. I beat it in a day.
-Crusader Kings II: Sons of Abraham
Gives the Jews a chance to shine in the time period, all the while making catholic rulers a ton more interesting to play.
-Gnomoria
If you like Dwarf Fortress, then you'll like Gnomoria. It's complex, but if it's your thing, then you'll love it.

Games I plan on buying
-XCOM: Enemy Within
One of my favorite strategy games ever. Have to buy the expansion.
-Fallen Enchantress: Legendary Heroes
It was recommended on one of the top five lists. I've been looking for more 4X games that aren't space sims, so this will hopefully fit the bill.
-Hammerwatch
This was also recommended on one of the top five lists. Looks cool.
-Stanley Parable
I don't know how I haven't bought this yet. I played the mod and loved it, I'm sure I'm going to love the full release.

As a side note, I recently bought Riptide GP2 for android. If you've been looking for a great android game, look no further.

I recommend picking up Contagion, its only in Alpha at the moment but its very promising. The coop modes evidently need quite a lot of work still but I've had a LOT of fun in the 'hunt' mode which is sort of like a small scale, much faster paced DayZ. Basically you play a free for all hide and seek with other players in a Call of Duty sized map littered with zombies, if you are killed you play as a zombie for the rest of the round which is surprisingly incredibly fun. The game only cost me about $3 too which is an awesome deal.

The coop mode is like a slower paced left 4 dead, with fewer and slower but much more lethal zombies, the maps are rather claustrophobic which gives the zombies an advantage as well as lots of opportunities to sneak around and surprise players. As before, dying in this mode means you play as a zombie for the rest of the round, which is extremely fun. At this point the coop maps are pretty buggy however.

I picked this up during the last Summer Sale on a whim because, hey, an RPG about going to the moon. Then I started playing and found out that it's not really much of an RPG at all and thought I might have made a mistake, but kept on going anyway. And then the story started to unfold ...

By the end of the second act I was in tears, and remained in that state until long after I completed the game. This is the epitome of 'The Feels'. The soundtrack [http://freebirdgames.bandcamp.com/album/to-the-moon-ost]'s pretty good too.

And now to regain my mancard:

Recettear. Such a fun game.
You play as a little girl running an item shop. A friggen item shop! This has no right being this much fun >_<

Oh wait, that's not manly either, is it.

Guacamelee [http://store.steampowered.com/app/214770/] then. A mexican style metroidvania featuring wrestlers and chickens and sooooo many memes and game references. This has its tongue so far up its cheek that it's practically poking through.

And then there's Euro Truck Sim 2 [http://store.steampowered.com/app/227300/]. I got quite a few games this winter sale already, but for some reason this is the one I've spent most of my time on. It's just so relaxing cruising through Europe. Just pick your destination, put the radio on and go ^_^

- Portal & Portal 2, in case there's somebody in this universe who hasn't played them yet.
- Deadspace & Deadspace 2. Best horror shooters that have been made imo.
- Dark Souls: Prepare to die. My fovourite action-RPG ever.
- Gothic & Gothic 2. In case you like more slow paced RT RPGs. It's one of those gems that not many people know about.
- Fallout: New Vegas. Shooter RPG set in a post-apocaliptic future at Nevada.

Truthfully, I haven't spent enough time with anything to really make any good recommendations.

Don't Starve is fantastic, if you like that sort of thing and aren't looking for quick, cheap thrills.

Endless Space is a fascinating space based 4x game, if a little dry. Don't go in expecting Master of Orion or Galactic Civilizations II; which is the mistake some people make.

Prison Architect is currently still in Alpha, but just imagine Theme Hospital, but it's a prison. If you can get it discounted, that's probably less than the game will retail for when it's complete.

Binding of Isaac is inexpensive, arcadey and hilariously disturbing.

Dark souls prepare to die edition. Greatest game of this gen IMO, not the best PC port ever made (Infact it's god awful). But the community made fixes make all problems go away :3

Has anyone played Hammerwatch? Looks interesting and is pretty cheap. I'm interested in that style of game. I know Torchlight is pretty popular but I'm not sure my laptop could run it.

Defenders quest: valley of the forgotten. Tower defence combined with rpg style character progression. I also found it quite funny, especially in new game +
