Lately, Steam has been acting up - when I start a game, it comes up with the 'preparing to launch' window indefinitely, and more prominently, Steam itself has been taken up masses of CPU capacity when idle, as well as sucking large amounts of bandwidth from my internet connection.

Why is Steam being such a dickhead? Is anyone else seeing these issues?

Sounds like you have some games that need updating?
No, it's not that. It happens to me too. Steam is a terrible resource hog on XP.

Have you tried deleting Steam.dll and Clientregistry.blob? Allowing steam to re-download these files fixes a lot of problems. Solved the "preparing to Launch" thing for me.

No, that didn't work. I deleted the files and it re-downloaded them, but no dice.

Some games work, some don't. It's odd.

Have you tried the Steam forums or Steam support? They're probably better equipped at answering your questions.

Then I've no idea. Contact steam support like the other guy suggested.
