why they are worth money?
I don't see the appeal of buying steam trading cards. I understand you can sell it for money. I just fail to see how I got $0.15 for selling a torchlight 2 card that seems worthless. I will take the money but I don't quite understand what valve is trying to do.

I will guess someone may mention supply and demand. I fail to see why any demand may even exist for said cards.

press the red button on my badges. how could one resist pressing a red button that tells you to not press it.

Because, as advanced as people are, we still share traits with magpies, and attribute value to meaningless drivel. Because we're dumb.

For one, I think they're used in the Steam profile leveling up... thing... You have access to more emoticons, a longer friends list, and... other things I guess.

Second is to customize your profile background with your favorite character. I guess.

Third is the ease of getting the cards and having a full set, minus around a dollar. I guess.

They are stupid.

Main point is badges. Collect a set, get a badge, a new level, and some other trinkets. I have bought cards, though only with money I made by selling cards, I mean why would I spend actual money on the things, and the badges were the reason why. Right now, I'm hoarding my left over Steam sale cards. I figure the price will keep climbing as people create badges or just hoard them for collection purposes, reducing the number available.

I like them, because I can sell them and I don't even have to work for them, so yeah. Does Steam level actually give you anything?

Some extra friend slots, and at each ten levels, a better chance at getting a booster pack. Also, every ten levels, you get an extra showcase slot. Now if only I knew what a steam showcase was...

Major benefit I can see is that you can get coupons for money off games, although I'm not sure which ones or how often these drop.

But yeah, just sell them. I made 39p selling two Tomb Raider cards. :p

I wonder if anyone wants my binding of issac cards...
Hell, I didn't know I could sell them!

Maybe I should pay attention to steam a little more.

Because COLLECTIONS!!!!1111!!!1!111!!!1!!1ELEVENSIES

No, seriously. When people find out that they can collect the cards and theoretically get rewards for getting them all, the go all Pokemon on it. And at such a low, low price!

Hey, it'll eventually mean a free indie game for me.

The coupons don't seem to be for any particularly good games - I made a badge to check it out and got 90% off a game called Krater, but perhaps coupons for better games do have a chance of dropping. I also sold some Tomb Raider cards today, but one was a foil one, which as far as I can tell has no advantage other than being rare, but still sold that one card for more than £1.

This is a showcase that one of my friends has:

It sits just below your avatar on your profile and I've seen similar things for the badges you have collected, achievements that you choose to display, etc. That one is for the rarest achievements you have gotten I believe.

Its a vanity thing. I figure its kinda like me and games with decent cash shops where you can buy awesome armor skins. Should you put money in your steam wallet so you can buy cards? I won't do it, but will I use the money I make from selling card and doubles to buy more cards to complete collections? Ya sure, why not? Is the stuff really worth anything, so far I have only gotten a few things that I actually like or even want.

You know gamerscore?

This is like that, only valve figured out how to make shit-tons of money off of it.

I know that feeling. I get friend invites every other day or so of people trying to buy my unusual. None of them have even approached a decent offer, either.

OT: Because people like to collect things. Hell, I've spent far more than I should on freaking Magic: The Gathering cards. It's also a way for Steam to push their new profile system. Feels like they're trying to do something like gamerscore or trophies.

I crafted a number of badges during the steam sale and I'd get an extra steam summer sale card for each one crafted. Since then I've crafted 3 and gotten 2 discount coupons. One was for 66% off Awsomenauts ($10 to $3.40) and the other 90% Serious Sam 3:BFE ($39.99 to $4.00) so I figure they do drop relatively often.

All the badges I've crafted have been completed using the money I've gotten from selling other cards.

I had one card left to complete a steam summer sale badge (others I got for voting). And I thought "what the heck?", because as far as I am aware aside from useless stuff you could get a discount coupon. Spent 16 cents, created a badge and got an emoticon and background... Yay...
Not buying them ever again.

I hear that. In total I've managed to sell $2.98, so I'm hoping to afford a BL2 DLC. Although after a while cards no longer seem to drop for me from playing BL2, so I think there must be a card limit of some kind. I suppose I'll have to play another game for a while and see if they start to drop again.

I have no idea how to craft badges, but unless I can hock the coupons if they're for a game I don't want I'll probably pass on that.

Selling cards now has become a matter of pennies, back in the beta and shortly after release you could get up to £1 for some non-foil cards and £4-5+ for a foil. If you're going to sell them then don't expect to become a millionaire overnight!

And if you're giving them away, look no further than your bestest friend. Me :p

All I know is I completed several sets without spending any money.
I realize it's stupid and pointless, but since I already have the cards, might as well trade them.
