Steam - Worth it, or overpriced?

I'm thinking about starting to use steam - it seems like a good way of getting games hassle free.

But the games seem to come at a premium compared to normal prices, especially for games that are slightly older. On the other hand, it has a good number of 2+ year old games that would be near impossible to obtain legally, at a very good price.

Your thoughts, Escapists?

Actually, from my experience, Steam is normally equal to normal prices, and its sales are always good. I'd get it, the worst that can happen is that you don't like it and give it up before buying anything.

Use it. If you can get a game from the store, do that, but if not, get it through Steam. It's very conveinient.

Personally I use steam a lot and I find its prices are pretty reasonable (especially with their weekend deals).

While its true some of their slightly older games are more expensive than retail (mainly because retail try's to shift their old units with deals while steam doesn't) the small increase in price is worth it for the convenience and the fact that you'll never have to worry about losing DVD's, etc.

Definitely worth it. Not just old games that are cheap, Steam has tons of sales on new games. A couple of months after it came out, I got Left 4 Dead for 25 dollars on a Steam sale when GameStop was still selling it for 50. Also, you need it to play Valve games. It's very useful and worth the download.

Steam prices usually don't have anything added on to the normal retail price and it's a fast and efficient method of getting games as well as a stable anti-piracy platform and has many good quality servers and games.

I'd definately get it.

quick question, but do you live in europe or the us? if your in europe then steam prices are usually higher than retail from what i understand. here in the us though they are usually the same price, and sometimes lower, than at retail. plus, the games ea has over steam (except crysis warhead) has no securom drm, so no activation limits if you get them over steam. others games still do though, but ea doesent use it for their steam releases.

Steam is totally worth it ( at least most friends say so )

Personally I dont use steam, but that isnt cause its bad or overpriced.
Its cause I dont use my pc for gaming anymore ( I have consoles for that. )

But at least try it, you like it ? you keep it , you hate it ? you leave it.

They have some things that are very hard to find elsewhere, which is nice. It's convenient and sometimes costs less than elsewhere. I think if you're looking for older stuff, though, gog.com seems better.

I hate steam and I only have it installed for Empire: Total War, the fact a game requires it even adds to the anoyance. It wastes resources for no reason as well as Hard Drive space. Having said that I'm someone that wont buy Digital download and prefers a hard copy over downloading, atleast then I have a physical object I can show for my $$ :).

The prices are good, and the games are in good variety.
Connectivity issues for me have been few and far between.

Which ISP do you use? (This is relevant and important.)

I'm from England, and the prices I'm seeing seem a bit over retail.
I'll probably try it, for the benefits that you've all mentioned above, but I might chicken because you can't resell a downloaded game (I normally play thru once then resell on ebay).

There's some problems here and there, such as the little trick they pulled on that game Company of Heroes: Tales of Valor, charging 35$ while the estimated store price(and Impulse's) was 20-25$.

Other than that, I would say - Get it. It's a great alternative to driving down to the store. Plus, it updates games automatically and all that stuff.

For the moment I'm with BT, and I usually GET around 2mb download speed.

Why is it important?

Steam is defiantly worth it, I've got a nice little list of games from there, and I usually whack the overly into my other games so I can talk to people still and surf the web in-game.

Well since you don't pay a monthly fee or anything, to use steam, I recommend using it whenever possible and if you can't find it on steam, find it elsewhere.

Isn't the Steam app itself only like two megabytes or so?
