Overpriced.

I could go out, buy a physical copy and it would be about 20% cheaper.

If you can find better deals, do. But some of the deals they have are awesome, like Left 4 Dead half off and Assassin's Creeds for only 10$.

It is very worth it! The sales are amazing, the fact that you can find old games is also very nice. If you rather have a hard copy of a game then Steam is not for you.

I've never been able to find games significantly cheaper at local retailers. Best Buy, Target, Game Stop and their ilk are usually the same price or more expensive and buying on Amazon or a similar online retailer may be cheaper but usually it comes out about even once I add in the shipping cost.

Personally, I still buy hard copies of many of my games because...I'm resistant to change my habits but in the last year I've almost completely switched over to digital distribution whether it's through Steam, Playstation Store or...well, that's about it. The convenience is amazing, I doubt Steam is going to go poof any time soon and since I rarely pick up a game I've had for more than a few years I don't feel as if I'd care that much if Steam suddenly went belly up and now I have more shelf space for books.

I've disliked steam ever since it made me buy 2 copies of CS:S for some absolute bullshit reason.

But everyone else thinks it's ok.

But OT:It seems fairly priced, but annoying.

i dont see how you can consider steam overpriced. they sell brand new games at 50 dollars US where the SAME game in a store would be 65+. i love steam. i've saved so much money on brand new games that every once in a while i can buy a whole new one using only my savings!!!

I've only recently installed Steam because I've only recently gotten a computer that can run new games - the irony being that I'm only interested in playing older games anyway.
It might not be the best option for many retail titles, but $5 to play The Dig again? Hell yes.

Steam prices aren't a premium unless you're outside the US. Which they've stated they're going to fix it, but currently trying to find a reliable conversion system. I love the current rendition of Steam and all the sales Valve throws on it. World of Goo for $5, the entire Telltale catalog (until Monkey Island) for $45, those are steals.

But the games seem to come at a premium compared to normal prices, especially for games that are slightly older. On the other hand, it has a good number of 2+ year old games that would be near impossible to obtain legally, at a very good price.
they sell games half off all the time and even let people play them completely free on certain weekends. If I had money and a decent PC I'd use it.

I find it convenient and cheap. It angers me, however, when it won't lead me load Half-Life 2 or Episode 1, and screws up Portal's dialogue.

Definitely get Steam. I've had it for about 2 years now, and I can only say that I'm satisfied. A lot of the special sales are unique and can only be found on Steam, as well as certain games.

Also, only some games are overpriced, but I don't see that as an issue when the game is installed on a platform that saves settings, automatically applies updates and allows you to chat with friends in the middle of the games you have installed via Steam.

Get it!

Your thoughts, Escapists?
quick question, but do you live in europe or the us? if your in europe then steam prices are usually higher than retail from what i understand.
Not really. It's only really small indie games or older games that are more expensive than retail on European Steam.

On a whole however, games are just outright more expensive to buy over here.

Steam is selling Star Wars: Republic Commando for 10 dollars and YOU SHOULD BUY IT NOW.

These are my thoughts. Steam is the best, usually most painless way to get old games. Freedom Force runs okay bit a bit spotty, remember steam games aren't optemized like GoG's are.

Man steam looks really cool and the first game I checked out was almost half the price compared to when I see it at retail (medieval 2 total war). I'm definetly going to have to investigate this further.

Some games are more expensive on Steam, but consider this:

I got The Orange Box for about £12-£15. That included Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, Portal and Team Fortress 2. And I still play all of those games today.

I use Steam constantly. It does crash on occasion and it can be a bit finicky sometimes, but I honestly can't see a reason to not use it.
