Steam is OK I suppose. I have had no problems with it except the ridiculous prices.
The prices are truly ridiculous---I mean, $9.99 for the Orange Box a few weekends ago? Absurd! Insane! Ludicrous (if you're Valve, that is...)
Yes, 5 great games for $10 INSANE!!!
And over $200 in quality FPSs for only $99.99? Valve is gouging!

They have a lot of sales and they're usually cheaper than retail.

I like Steam.
In the UK, I might add. You can usually buy a hard copy for cheaper.
Ah, here in North America, Steam's pretty cheap. Do they have different prices for Europe? I always thought you guys paid more.

Like I think Steam is awesome and stuff because it cuts out the middle man and stuff and having no retail package and stuff gives them the ability to sell stuff cheaper and stuff it's also really nice and stuff to not have to take care of a disk and stuff or worry about losing it or storing and stuff and I don't have to hang on to cd keys and stuff to prove that I own stuff that I bought and stuff and when I'm done playing a game for a while I can just uninstall it and stuff and when I wanna come back to it or whatever I can just download it again and stuff I don;t have to look for a disk and stuff my favorite game is left 4 dead because you can kill zombies and stuff and work with your team and stuff.
Please, PLEASE use punctuation and learn to not overuse the word 'stuff'.

Ontopic: I like steam. The prices are reasonable and you no longer have to leave your house if you want to buy a game.
Read some of my other posts and my reasons shall be unveiled and stuff.

I love Steam a lot. I'm the kind of guy who likes physically owning the product though (also, I have a SHIT download speed) so I prefer to have the discs. But still, Steam is the bomb.

I went to the store, bought The Orange Box, put it in my computer and... it opened Steam and started downloading the games. That was pretty stupid, I thought people bought games in a real life stores so you don't HAVE to download them...
If memory serves, you can install it from the DVDs. That's what they're there for. The downloads should be just for the updates - though I think you have the option of downloading it from the internet too.
Well, I must admit I never really pay attention when installing games, because, you know, I want to actually play the game, so I might have skipped the part where I was given the option to install it from the disks or download it off of Steam. Still makes me wonder why downloading it off of Steam was the default choice though...

Don't trust this downloady business, it scares me. Amazon is about as far as I'll go with this online shopping malarky...and having just looked at the prices on Steam, Amazon is a lot cheaper too.

You don't actually have to download the games from online you know, it's just that a lot of the gems on Steam are only available in digital download form.

Anyway, I love Steam. Apart from some random maintenance issues, she usually runs quite well. The interface is nice, the friend functions are good, and the community feature is pretty solid.

If only Valve could somehow update games faster, yet at the same quality. If only...

They have cheap deals, yes, but that's just a couple of products (at best) each time. Their prices are expensive, especially here in the EU, because their dollar to euro ratio is a retarted 1:1. That IS kinda ridiculous. The Orange Box is still, and will always be, an amazing deal though.

Well, of the download services it's the best and least restricitve by miles.

The pricing is good and the unlimited installs on unlimited computers is better than any disc based DRM so far, even if Steam is essentially DRM. The community system works well enough and the auto updates are very helpful.

But it's by no means perfect, the option to back up games to a DVD(s) would be nice, similarly if your account gets hacked Valve are less than helpful. If it gets hacked multiple times they just delete it, games, stats and all, I suppose the argument is you should have been more careful with your login details but it's still a *****.

Having said that, compare it to EA's service, where you pay for a game just for it all to tell you you can't have it, then have EA support tell you to fuck off because you don't have a disc or CD key to quote. Compared to that it's the nuts.

Other than one major incident [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/9.109521], I've had lots of fun with Steam. It's how I acquire most of my games nowadays.

Yeah I think the prices are high in the rest of Europe too. It's a shame really.

I don't hate it, it's very convenient. I don't even think it's possible to hate .exe files anyway. Favourite game is Half Life 2 (I'm gonna include the Episodes here).
