So i've been going over this momentary obsession of mine, this time with steampunk and steampunk-related stuff. And since the Escapist is a pretty lively place, I thought, why not make a thread dedicated to steampunk videogames? They are rare and the setting/art style/whatever is quite awesome.
Tell us about your favourite steampunk games, maybe post a pic or two, maybe some videos. If you know a steampunk game that you think not many people have heard of, show it to us.

I'd like see as many steampunk games listed here as possible.

Arcanum [http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/arcanum_of_steamworks_and_magick_obscura] is a fantastic marriage of technology and magic in a Steampunk setting.

Bioshock would be the obvious contender. It's a great series and steampunk coupled with Art Deco does leave a strong impression from the artistic standpoint.
The steampunk aspect seems a bit more prominent in infinite though. That game does look awesome.

Damnation is meant to be a Steampunk game but I hear rumors its awful.

Worth mentioning that I am also a massive fan of steampunk shizzle but for me its not a phase as much as it is a lifestyle haha.

Currently writing a book based on an alternative steampunk setting. If it gets published I'll come back here when I get a game contract for it =P

If you like terrible RPGs, I would suggest a game called Resonance of Fate. Very steampunky.

Thief series (but only if you like stealth)

Deadly Shadows (Thief 3) is the easiest to find and get working on current-gen pcs, but Thief 2 is probably the purest expression of the steampunk aesthetic.

Really? It was the only one I could never get to work, which sucked.

Thief 1 and 2 don't like multi-core processors. There are workarounds, but 3 came out in 2007 or so and is still available from distributors like Steam. That doesn't mean that people have never had problems with it, obviously, but its setup is generally easier than 1 and 2. Sorry to hear that 3 didn't work out so well for you. Bummer. At least 4 is on its way. :)

I just leaped over to Steam in excitement and found that the system requirements state 'Thief: Deadly Shadows does not support play on laptop computers'. That explains a lot, really.

=P

Its nearly complete, just going through it and making changes here and there. Developing my characters more and making it more steampunky haha.

Yeah I got a name but its a secret!
Don't want people to steal it =P

I know it says that, but I'm skeptical. I have the hard copy instead of Steam, but it runs just fine on my laptop as do Oblivion, Morrowind, Risen, Mirror's Edge and several other large games. You certainly need a discrete graphics card, but I'm not sure why there would be any other problem. I suspect that caution is outdated or at least imprecise.

Although I understand not wanting people to steal your ideas, is there any way you could maybe release a chapter? or just a summary of sorts? I'm intrigued.

I played it and thought it was quite good.

On Topic: I'm making a Steampunk game, but it's going to take a while to release it.

I wouldn't really say Bioshock is steampunk. Dieselpunk, maybe, and that would be a stretch. If anything, with the focus on genetic modification its actually fairly close to cyberpunk, if anything. Steampunk's focus tends to be more on alternate history, which Bioshock neatly sidesteps by having a city completely removed from any sort of timeline by the virtue of being under the ocean and closed off to the outside. Infinite, however, is much more in line with your typical steampunk setting. In related news, I hate it when people think steampunk is just a Victorian aesthetic. Heads up: You can have a steampunk setting without having Victorian anything. Jade Empire says hello. Hell, you could even have a modern day steampunk setting if you simply provide for an alternate timeline. Neil Stephenson's book "The Diamond Age" is steampunk that focuses heavily on nanotechnology in China, of all things. To add to it, there is a "Victorian" class of people in the book who have all your trappings of the typical steampunk fandom. And are portrayed as mostly backwards asshats. Its really lovely.
