Am I the only guy that thought of the Spy when they read this? Some French guy impersonating someone else (Valve staff) in order to get the info they want (your account details). The fact that this dealt with Valve and Steam only reminded me of him more.

If you have ever played RuneScape, then you'll know that that is a major scam. The one good thing about RuneScape is that you learn to never give out your password for anything.

If you've been playing anything online or using any online service for more than the last nano-second you should have by now seen the disclaimer "GMS/ADMINS/EMPLOYEES WILL NEVER ASK YOU FOR YOUR PASSWORD".... I think it's fairly self explanatory what was happening there...

I learned a long time ago to never give out my password/click on or trust an online advertisement/send money orders to Nigerian princes.

Steam doesn't send messages in french. Unless you ARE French. Also, Steam doesn't need your password, so they wouldn't ask for it.

You often get targeted by scammers if you are in big popular steam groups (which are useless btw.)
Definitely not useless(eGO, helps me keep track of events.) However, I do agree with the other part.

The Steam chat windows have "Never tell your password to anyone." on them for a reason. It's obviously a scam. If a steam employee wanted to fiddle around with your account, they wouldn't need your password.
This. Valve can modify anything in your account they need to at will. But like any good service, they can't ever see your password, as they are only saved as the encrypted hash.

I think it's safe to say he was trying to scam you.
I think you have your answer here. Besides that, steam is English, while this guy was sending you bad French? Please. You should've sniffed this scammer out long ago, reported and removed from friends.

yer, he was scamming you, first of all a valve employer would never ask for your password, secondly you can be damn sure that if your located in an English speaking country that they would contact you in english, thirdly report that guy, some stupid French guy might fall for it.

......... This is the WORST attempt at password scamming I've seen so far. Anybody who is retarded enough to believe that a VIRUS can be linked to your ACCOUNT deserves what they get.

Just a scam, and a pretty obvious one too. Though you should've said "Steam has a special program in it that prevents people from saying their password, so I'll link you an image containing it" with a tinyurl link to rickroll, just for the fun of it.

This is basically what AeriaGames says "Don't give your passwords to anyone, even our staff. We know your passwords anyways"

Any admin will easily be able to access your account even without your approval, so it's safe to say that this is a scam.

Viruses have to be attached to executable files and since an account isn't an executable file it cannot be infected with a virus. The message you received was someone attempting to trick you into giving them your account details. I'd advise that you keep this person blocked and report them.

Steam never ever use the friend system either so any links sent to you through the friend system are false as my younger brother discovered when he was directed to a copy and paste steam site which claimed to have some big promotion on only to lose his account also if they get into your account they can very quickly change password and email preventing you from getting back in. Lucky I am such an obsessive compulsive i had all the pay pal receipts for the games on the account so I was able to get the account back and clip my brother round the ear.

Remember kiddos the actual steam website log in page will have a little closed padlock symbol at the bottom of your browser to show its secure at the very least make a new account to use if your not sure.

Hmmm...something really wierd happened to me on steam the other day:

Someone called STEAM-VAC added me as a friend...I have on my profile just add me as you wish so I accepted, thinking it was just some dude who decided to act upon that.

He sent me a message in french, so i told him i speak English. He sent the message again semi-translated and barely understandable. It read:
Hello this is STEAM-VAC we need your password et user nom cause we have detected a trojan (french word) virus (french word) account...if you don't give us the information we will (french word) your account.

I was like...say what!?

He re-sent it in better English...and basically he wanted my password and user-name because of a threat of virus attatched to my acount...and if i didn't he would shut my accoiunt down.

On impulse I blocked communication with this guy. Have heard/seen nothing since.

So..was he staff? Or some prick messing around?

EDIT: just thought...wouldn't be impossible for a virus to link to my ACCOUNT?

I thought at the time: if he was staff he wouldn't need to add me as friend, right? He would just message/email me no matter what.

Wierd stuff
Blatant con. You did the right thing in blocking him
