Too bad you have to have the 20 or so games they use the achievements for -_-
Actually, there's 7 sets of challenges and the first on every one seems to revolve around your profile (have an avatar, 10 friends, etc.), so that's 7 in the bag for virtually everyone.

Combine that with the fact that you've likely got a number of games with Steam achievements, and even if you haven't, you'd only need to pay about £4 to make up the achievements on the indie games.

It promotes indie sales, gives us some deals to try out new games, and we get entered in to a huge prize draw, whilst Valve get both teh moneyz and a better connection to the Steam community.

Set 4:

#1: Send a gift to a friend
(Anyone want a copy of HL2 I've been wanting to unload for ages?)

#2: Make a Sacrifice in Call of Duty: Black Ops
(Not even a sale price here. Skipping.)

#3: Set a leaderboard score of at least 11,200,000 for 'Bonus Mode' in Shatter
(The cheap Indy objective of the set. I'll probably try this one.)

#4: Create a Crass Menagerie in Left 4 Dead 2
(I already have L4D2, so I'll try this one too.)

The objective pattern seems to be: (1) Steam Community releated, (2) a recent game and complete a specific achievement, (3) an indie and reach a certain score on a certain level, and (4) an older title on sale and complete a specific achievement.

Shatter is a really good indie game(bought it last summer). Definetly worth 2 bucks.

On a side note does anybody want to be my friend? Still need 7 friends more :p

I'll take that if you're interested. Never turn down something free, especially if strangers offer it to you.

Really? I got it first time. Should I declare myself king of everything, or do I need to get Mr Fish [http://thepunchlineismachismo.com/archives/150] first?

If anyone needs more for their friends list, I don't use that option much , but I'll happily add you if you request one from 'Karmageddon' on steam.

I'm on 9/10 already, and all I've bought so far was chime for £1, having already had Droplitz AAAaa! and Poker Night, and having tried the demos of Undergarden (which didn't grab me, but got me a point), and Magic the Gathering (not my thing, but wasn't going to buy for a point).

So, ok I owned 3 of the cheap games already, but I'm on 9/10 with 3 sets of challenges to go, I'd be on 6/10 without any games, and I'd still have 12 challenges left, so I think we can really crush any ideas that Steam is 'forcing' people to buy games, they're just marketing them in the very smart way that appeals to our achievement hungry natures.

you DO know you fucked your own chances right? you don't go blabbing about contests as that would make the pool of potential recipients larger which makes your chances smaller.
The maximum number of users logged into Steam in the last 42 hours were 3.2 million, the vast majority of which have seen the competition and presumably have got challenges done. Frankly, if it wasn't me, someone else would have posted it.

Already had the Beat Hazard one. Advice for anyone who's having trouble with it: find a song that gives constant rapid fire (Saxon - Valley of the Kings worked great for me) and stick it in a folder on its own so that that is all the game plays endlessly. Oh and playing the game loads so you level up and start with a massive multiplier helps, or am I thinking of a different game?

Simples.

I reached 15 objectives today, which was my goal. I owned about 30% of the games mentioned beforehand, so it wasn't too hard. Only bought two games: Droplitz and Chime. about 3 euros total, which I'm fine with. Although, if this is the entire steam christmas sale, I'll be disappointed. Last year they had amazing deals on, like, 15 titles per day for ten days. Now it's 50-75% off on three titles, mostly cheap-as-dirt games anyway, for two days at a time. If not, though.. there's always GOG.com :D

Bob - Easy to get achievement. Not my type of game.
ZD - Hard to get. Partly due to difficulty. Mostly due to the game being boring as f***.

I'm already on your list (though I'm still 6 short).
