On one hand: Even if this does lead to an eventual cure, it could takes years, maybe decades for something that the common person can easily get.

On the other hand: There is the chance this could lead to a cure for HIV. That by itself is awesome.

On a different hand: Well, this can help promote stem cell research

On the opposite of that hand: Religious nuts and anti-stem cell people are more than likely going to say that this was solely a miracle of God. Or find a way to completely ignore it like they've been doing for the past decade or so .
I completely agree with Shiva over here.

Probably something like "This is a rare case" or "God did it, not man".
God wouldn't support this if its as terrible as they believe it to be and to be honest stem cell research isn't that bad depending on the circumstances. But sluts getting knocked up and taking the easy way out isn't right.

*EDIT* and I know you personally weren't saying "God Did it not man" =P just to clear up any confusion.

People who argue against stem cell research really boil my blood.

It's one of a few things that could set me off on command. I just don't understand the moral issue at all. It doesn't register with me.

Fuck I'm of the persuasion that they should grow an exact clone of use from birth. Lobotomise it and keep it in a farm somewhere so if and when anything goes wrong with us. We can just take what we need from it
Ok maybe that's a bit farfeched... but I can dream can't I.
ha, that's the whole plot of The Island

I think he is politely telling you to shut up, and to not pick a religious flame fight over this topic.
Too bad. It's a legitimate point. It's not religion flaming.
Both my parents are Christian. They both believe in Stem Cell research.

My Aunt is also a Christian. She too believes in Stem Cell research. Your point is moot.

And it is Religious flaming, seeing how more than two people have already told you to quit it. Give it up, you aren't doing anything other than pissing off the community.
I can name far more than the four that have been brought up that are both, but that's irrelevant. I'm not saying all religious people are against stem cell research. I'm saying the vast majority of those against it are religious. Religious people ARE the blockade, no matter how many of your personal family members don't fit that mold. And the point of discussions is not to make people feel good, but even if it were, presuming that the entire community is enraged because a few people disagree does not make it flaming. I'm not going to change my views because someone online disagreed with them. That's not how this works.
Wow, you little rebel you.

You have been warned, and I am quite sure I am not the only one to have reported you. Good luck.

Okay. Religious guy here. Stem cell research, good as long as you don't take human life, even in fetus form. People are okay with killing a fetus that hasn't been given the chance to live? Well guys, since I haven't researched the topic very much, give me a rundown of how it goes.

Its an interesting phenomenon whereby directly going against the word of god has him reward us. Anyone who follows this line of thinking in any debate is going to get canned so quickly :p It sure as hell makes it hard to justify converting people and forcing them to worship since, hell, if you dont bother he'll reward you!

Not people. INSANE Religious people. Big difference.
Fixed that for you. The people protesting are normally mentally unstable. Associating them with religion would be an insult to religion. No one should be associated with insane people.
Yeah that. Don't make generalizations about all religious people. Can't classify the vast majority of the population of earth into one group.

Ah yes, because they're not real people

Even non religious people get angry over stem cell research. Usually because they only listen to the majority who don't like it and they won't do any research of their own on the subject, but still, it's not just crazy fundamentalists who do it.
*cough* The majority is actually fine with it, so long as it leads to good things. The loudest people don't like it, and these two groups should never be confused.

That is absolutely incredible. One step closer to curing one of the world's most terrible diseases.

Because that homosexual got HIV as a punishment from God, obviously.

I really hope this is a major breakthrough. HIV is one thing I hope will be eradicated from this Earth within the century, or at least be on the way to doing so.

I am just thinking people would try to discredit it in any way to take support away from stem cell research.

It's in a way "Playing God." The defense is that people die and we cant save everyone.

You're nitpicking a legitimate distinction while pointing out the smallest minority group this country could ever possibly have as if they somehow make the picture more complicated. Yes, there are 45 people out 360 million who don't believe in God OR stem cell research. What's your point?
My point is that not just religious people can be against stem cell research. Yes, you can call it nitpicking, but that's not what I was doing. I was only pointing out that not only crazy religious people can be against this.

Just regular crazy people can too.
Right, but one is a large body that can legitimately affect policy in this country, and the other can fit in one high school classroom.
Yes but collectively they are people, not religious. You don't have to be religious to be against stem cell research. While a vast amount of people who oppose stem cell research are religious, you don't need to be religious. With all due respect, it does make your original statement quite inaccurate.

OT: Well, scientific and medical progress is always good to hear. It's also nice to hear of someone sacrificing their time and putting themselves through a painful operation to assist another human being.

This shouldn't be opposed either; it's bone marrow, not a foetus. Sadly, there is the strong possibility that people will see 'stem cell' and will pick up their pitchforks, torches and picket signs.
