I'm from Tennessee and we think Alabama is redneck...
Ohio and Ky are damn yankees, and NC and SC are fellow bretheren(mainly cause they don't have a top tier SEC football team)

I'm from California, so for me there are really only five sections.

#1. The West Coast, which California owns. Oregon and Washington think they have a piece of it, and they'd be right, but really they are just a less awesome extension of California.

#2. The Mid-West, which is where people from California go when they've given up on their dreams.

#3. The South, which is where stupidity, bigotry, violence, incest, bestiality, religion, and manners breed.

#4. New York, which some call "Back East". Awesome place, but full of ass holes...

#5. The long lost, and frequently forgotten, Alaska. This is where the sun never sets or rises, and Eskimos do battle with Dragons.

Out here in Minnesota, for some reason people in the rest of the country seem to have the notion that it's always cold up here. That's a stereotype I find funny, considering how swelteringly hot and humid our Augusts usually get (I'm talking upper 80s to mid 90s with dew points in the 70s, going by the Fahrenheit scale).

Yeah, it may not be much compared to some other states, but it's quite a stark contrast compared to what many seem to think.

I grew up in central illinois, and i'm pretty sure we don't have a sterotype as no one in the rest of the country is aware that there are parts of illinois that are not chicago.
I grew up in Illinois too!! Except I did grow up in Chicago, and I'm still here. XD

Yeah, I'm pretty sure that Illinois doesn't have a stereotype. And if we do then I'm not aware of it.
I'm from Illinois and living in Wisconsin. We have a stereotype, just no one is aware of it until they come to Wisconsin. We even have nicknames. There's FIB (Fucking Illinois Bastards) and flatlander (that one's pretty self-explanatory). If you have an Illinois license plate in Wisconsin, someone is going to judge you and someone is going to cut you off in traffic. Even though most of the stereotypes are directed at those from Chicago and I'm smack dab in the middle of central Illinois.

My roommate once said to me, "Do you know so-and-so?" "Maybe, why? Do we have the same major?" "No, he's from Illinois." I could not think of a single response to that.

Wisconsinites kind of have some weird dislike towards all the surrounding states. The UPers (upper Michigan), the mudducks (Minnesota), and the most hatred always goes to the FIBs. It was a bit of shock to come here without knowing any of that.

I live in Texas, born and raised, and vehemently deny that George W. Bush is "one of us". Also, King of the Hill is full of shit... we cook with charcoal, like men. Propane has a switch to start the fire... you know what else has a switch? The stove, in the kitchen.

Actually, last year I was fired to go to Dubai, UAE to teach people how to make films in HD. When I got there, they seemed surprised I wasn't wearing a cowboy hat and had pictures of my horse in my wallet. They asked plenty of questions about home (nothing I took offensive, they were polite and curious) like:

"Do people still ride horses there?" - Yes, those that own them. Trucks are more the norm.
"Do you say howdy?" - When I'm not paying attention.
"Is barbecue big?" - Look at my gut, whaddya think?
"Are there a lot of cowboys and indians?" - Nah. You're thinking of the American southwest.

As far as England, as much as I can gather from my internet research, you guys have a group of people known as Chavs who most English people seem not so fond of. My research seems to indicate that these Chavs are sort of like your version of rednecks. Correct me if I am wrong, of course.
Chavs (or neds as us Scots call them) are basically ignorant, violent, alcoholic thugs with a penchant for horrible fashion and beating you down and stabbing you for not being like them. They love their football (soccer) to unhealthy degrees most of the time and are known to dabble in copious levels of substance abuse. They rarely have jobs, tend to hang around town centres (downtown areas) and stare menacingly at people while waiting for their drug dealer to show up. They are despised by almost everyone yet the justice system lets them away with everything.

That a good enough idea? xD

It's worse up here. Granted we're difficult to comprehend at the best of times, but neds like "tae speak like dis pawl, cause it's pure dead brilliant by the way min, aye fuckin' mintet"

It's truly horrible to have to listen to them shout down the phone when you're near them. Even worse when on public transport as they no concept of the noise they're making.

Thats interesting. I remember going to New York once and getting made fun of because of my accent. At the time I just looked at them and shrugged, but later on they explained to me that people from Chicago tend to elongate their vowels.

Us New Yorkers kick ass, who cares about the rest of the country?
This is a good example of one that people around my part of the country hold and that is that people from New York, California, and Texas think that they are the best states in the whole country. It is funny because they are largely consumer states and produce very little - they couldn't survive one week without the supplies from all the fly over states they criticize ^^

I am well aware that the quote was meant as a joke but it is a valid stereotype held by many of my Oklahoma peers. One I have heard from Texans who visit is that Oklahoma has nothing to do but cows. Sadly, this has been largely factual and not merely a stereotype ._.

Fair, but off on a couple points. I am a new yorker, but from Upstate, not NYC. We could easily sustain ourselves, i have a farm on either side of my house. And I'm pretty sure that chavs aren't rednecks, but more like wiggers(excuse the term, it's the closest i could come up with). But yeah, I was just kidding, like you said.

Despite popular belief, there are intelligent people here and there. I do however dislike the West Coast. Was not my cup of tea at all, though I cannot speak for Oregon and Washington State.

Oh really? I am from the South and it wouldn't matter if I were from the northeast, the mid-west, the southwest, or the northwest- how could you, a Californian, label anyone as bigoted, incestuous, or any of the other things you listed for Southerners? Considering the amount of gang violence, race riots, Charles Manson (or any other whack jobs you guys produce like the Zodiac Killer, Kennith Bianchi,and/or the 15 to 20 other famous and infamous serial killers that either hailed from or killed in your state), the 47th worst public school system, the incestuous/killings in the Wesson debacle, etc.; just how on Earth can you of all people negatively stereotype others? California leads all states in violent crime stats. On top of that you bastards were wanting to export prisoners from your crappy overcrowded prison system to my state. As far as religion goes? I think you Californians need to find some religion and start praying to whatever god you believe in that hypocrisy is forgiven.

PS: By the way, my state banned bestiality and regards it as a felony... in yours it's just a misdemeanor....LMAO Jeez...

There are two Maines, according to popular stereotypes between our two areas. Everyone knows that those in south Maine are all crazy city slicker buisnessmen, hardcore feminists, or hipster trash, and that anyone living north of Lewiston, or on an island, lives on a boat and goes fishing for "lobstah" in their free time and work time, or live in cabins in the deep woods and are extreme wilderness-guys. They can't pronounce "R" either.

The Canadians are also quietly invading the northernmost county and the primary language there is French, eh.

To those not familiar with these COMMON TRUTHS, it is because you are not from Maine. The only things you need to know:

Maine = Alaska
Maine = one million degrees below zero. Especially in the summer
Maine = lobster

4 Scoped rifles, 1 Authentic tommy gun, 6 Bolt Action rifles (Reeaal good lookin' :) ),5 Shot guns and 12 hand guns. Yeah.. totally not needed...

East Coast is made of mobsters, Irishmen and wisecracking taxi drivers. Everyone's either a crook, a tough cop or a sly, untrusting and hardened sort of chap
The South is incredibly traditional, homely, still has a bit of a racism problem and a few won't admit that the Confeds. lost the Civil War.
The Deep South are all related to each other, live in shacks and play banjos REALLY fast
The South West are a bunch of gun-totting bigoted cowboys and oil tycoons
The West Coast are surfers, fluffy-minded celebrities, fringe cultures and the stupidly rich

Whilst these may or may not be bang on, I'm more intrested in what each state has to say about their neighbours. The New Yorkers and Conneticcuttiananians (sp?) might both fit the East Coast type, but what do they wisecrack about each other?

Also, a small question not worth it's own thread: In films, the detective, once the door is opened, announces himself as detective so-n'-so, flashes his badge for a second and is instantly trusted. Is this the case in real life? Because if they only saw that badge for a second and belived it, it'd be Reeeaeeal easy to impersonate and trick
Ok well, im going to break things down in the above quote as best I can.

First, lets start with the east coast, where i reside. Mobsters? you have been watching too many movies. You might find A mafia families around New York but youll have to look hard. other than that you can find various drug cartels resideing in New England considering most of the drugs around here come from Canada, you know because the border is basically just dense forest.Irishmen? not many that ive seen. more french, polish and eastern european. As for that last bit...yea that sounds about right.

Second, the south which is generally defined as florida and the states north of it until virginia, and mabye a few to the west. Definately traditional, not a huge racism problem except for the carolinas same goes fopr the confederate people.

Third, deep south which would be the general area around Alabama and Mississippi. Definately more deep seated racism and confederate junkies. Shacks and Banjos? maybe for some that cant get a decent wage and can play a banjo but not very common anymore, except at fairs.

Fourth, South West. Yea the description above is pretty much accurate. Because the majority are Republicans, are in the NRA, and either work, own stock in, or run an oil buisness.

Last, the West. Also very homey and traditional. But have to agree with stupidly rich people and a overly large population of celebrities, some of which arent worth the time.

Next, that short bit about what nieghbor states say about each other. Im a Connecticutian*correct spelling* and we border New York, Rhode Island, and Mass.[cant spell whole thing] We make fun of the different accents associated with the different neighborhoods in New York. We make jokes about Rhode Island's size ( even though our state isnt much bigger)
And you cant really make fun of Mass. considering the have Cape Cod and the Boston Red Sox[baseball team for all those in UK or other]

The last bit about the detective thing, most people know thier rights in this country and would ask if the "detective" had a warrant. Other than that I personally dont trust cops in general.
