Unfortunately people like getting worked up over benign bullshit. If these people spent half as much time fretting over things that actually mattered we'd probably have flying motorcycles by now.
You mean like getting worked up over using the suffix gate?

Languages changes if a lot of people start associating meaning to the suffix "gate" then fine. Words only have the meaning we assign them anyway. If you know what the person is trying to convey then why do you care?
Actually I think that "SuffixGate" is a really good title for this convo about this controversy. And as much as I preferred "Ballghazi" to "Deflategate," in this case -gate wins because Suffixghazi sounds like a UK postal code.

It makes things sound edgy and cool and way more srs bzns than they really are.

Maybe people will stop adding -gate to things when Batman will stop being the poster boy for DC Comics and then we can all stop trying to be 7edgy9me.

Completely agree.

Before I knew anything about either side of this issue, the first thing I saw was #Gamergate.

My immediate reaction to this was that it was probably a bunch of 13 year old kids throwing a tantrum and trying to make it seem as important as the event that inspired their name.

I really think that if GG want to be taken seriously (the ones who are actually talking about journalism), they should change the name and break off completely.

I totally agree. None of these "controversies" are even remotely as interesting or relevant as the Watergate scandal was. What's more, they always end up sounding really stupid. Shirtgate, elevatorgate, deflategate. Come on.

I don't really like the idea of having a specific suffix for scandals/controversies, each one needs a name that sounds organic. I like ballghazi but I don't think every scandal should use ghazi. For example shirtgate also had shirtstorm which I love.

From misreading the title to this thread, I am now attempting to figure out what TheEndOfWorldsGate is...

Did someone blow up the multiverse? Again?

OT: You're right, and I also don't particularly like the habit, but it is an easy shorthand. I just worry what we're going to call the next scandal that involves water...

I agree 100% with the OP - it's really doing my nut in. Pretty much any kerfuffle, big or small, is getting a "gate" suffix these days...

Adding "Gate" is people trying to make whatever the issue is bigger than it already is. If they didnt have the gate, most people wouldnt even care about what the issue was.

At least it makes it easy to determine what things are okay to actively not give a shit about.

Who on earth is fucking water?

Yeah, I'm getting tired of all the gates. Anything and everything must have that suffix or it isn't real. Now it's having the opposite effect and people will instantly dismiss it as people taking it far too seriously.

I'd have taken this hashtag as meaning something wa-a-a-ay different, if I saw it on its own (or at least not in the context of this thread). I'd have assumed somebody was teleporting stuff around, most likely for a military purposes.

In-universe in StarCraft the Protoss don't really "build" most units or buildings but they literally teleport them in. And that's referred to as "gating" as they have these warp gates and also gateways which produce units. In Heroes 5/6 the Inferno faction do something similar - they ability they posess is called "Gating" can can summon creatures from hell (well, whatever passes for hell there) during combat to serve as additional troops.

There are probably more instances of "gating" used in games but I was more thinking about these two.

Yes, it was called the Watergate Scandal. You know why? 'Cause it happened at the fucking Watergate Hotel! Nobody was outraged about fucking Water!

Did Spygate occur at the Spygate Aquarium? Did Bountygate take place at the Bountygate Childrens Museum and Puppet Emporium? Did Deflategate take place at the Deflategate theme park? Did Gamergate take place at the Gamergate luau for gay, lesbian, and transgender allegiance?

This http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_scandals_with_%22-gate%22_suffix is ludicrous!

Agree? Disagree? Discuss!
What gives you the right to decide what people call scandals? Don't stifle their creative freedom, you tyrant
Also, I'm calling our discussion Gategate
A thread exists on this forum discussing gategate from a few months back.
I propose that we should discuss your theft of this idea in this thread under the topic gategategate.
If this has already been taken, I propose we refer to this as gategategategate or gateapalooza.

Well we could move to the 21st century and apply the -ghazi suffix to every scandal, but that doesn't sound quite as good as -gate. In any case we need another scandal at the Watergate hotel so we can determine what the proper naming of a second Watergate scandal should be. Do we go with Watergategate, or Watergate 2: The Scandaling, or perhaps Water-gate².
"-ghazi" kind of has the opposite meaning implied by it being a suffix. If something is suffixed with "-ghazi" it means that it's a non-issue that people make a big hullabaloo about anyway for political points (in reference to the Benghazi thing that Fox were trying to turn into a national controversy for months to no avail). -ghazi is for something where people want there to be a scandal, but there just isn't one, which is why "Gamerghazi" is the what anti-Gamergate group on Reddit called themselves.

Which always made me wonder why the Terrans could outdo them in terms of structure technology.

The Protoss can dematerialize an entire structure, transmit it across the cosmos, and materialize it elsewhere. But, they have yet to master lifting jets and self-contained power sources?

Shenanigans...

Have you seen their structures? OK, you should have, but did you notice something? They are really smooth and polished. Does this remind you of anything? Yes, indeed - Apple! I reckon that whatever the Protoss equivalent of Apple was actually took over the market and provides everything. So yeah - you have the Apple teleporting buildings but they only work with Apple approved power source and other Apple approved technologies. It would explain why their stuff is so expensive, too.

And the Terrans show us what happens if PCs win - they have modularity and some ugly but effective technology.

There is an additional joke in there with Bill Gates and "gating" but whatever. Use your imagination.
