A local burger place used to have pretty good fish and chips. Somehow the "chips" tasted better than their fries. I don't understand why anyone who's not allergic to fish would eat anything else.

- Fish and chips, please.
- ...Sorry?
- Fish and chips? Do you still serve it?
- No.

The guy had this "never heard of it" look.

I mean, I like orange ice cream. Know how common orange ice cream is? It's a common fruit. Go ahead and guess. There's a 240 flavors ice cream place near me. They have garlic ice cream, and curry ice cream, and dragonfruit ice cream. Orange ice cream? NAH.
How about vanilla ice cream and orange jam? I prefer custom flavors, but if I buy anything other than chili sauce, I use it once and then it just sits in my fridge growing mold.

There used to be this salsa at Costco what was perfect, it had this really different flavor and despite being not all that spicy it tasted almost exactly like what I used to get from one of my favorite Mexican restaurants around here. They stopped carrying it very quickly.

And then there was this brand of oatmeal I think it was called "oat revolution" or something like that and you know what the strawberry flavor actually contained strawberries in it, not apples flavored like strawberries(I'm lookin at you Quaker oats) and that shit sold out super quick so naturally the store stopped carrying it.

Tell me about it. I think they have cameras in the supermarket that catch if I buy anything more than three times, and send a message off to have it immediately discontinued.

I found it ONCE, in the last TWENTY YEARS. At a Coldstone Creamery.
Boy, am I glad that I like chocolate ice cream.

As for me? I don't have a great example of this. Well, when I was a child our baker at some point stopped. The bread of the other bakers in town just wasn't as good.

With me it's more recipe changes than products being discontinued. I stopped drinking coke when they switched from sugar to that corn syrup bullshit and still only drink them when I'm someplace they make them with sugar. I had my first twinkie in decades some years back and spit out my first bite. It wasn't nostalgia dentures, the recipe had been changed to make them cheaper to produce.

Oreo cereal. Chocolate O's with marshmallow creams.

You used to be able to just go to the supermarket and buy a box when it came out. Being a kid, I thought "I can come every week and buy a new one, this is too good". Then they stopped selling it. And seemingly unpersoned it because no one remembered it existed.

As far as I know, you can only get it in Korea.

Also, Vanilla coke. I haven't even seen a can of this since 2004. It was so good, did people just not like it?

Still awaiting the advertised Surge resurgance...

Also: So, here's a thing. Combos all taste the same. No no, don't argue. It's pretty much all the same kind of flavoring no matter what kind you choose. They're not bad, but they are samey and I gave them up years ago...except for one time. One time, they were determining which - out of two new flavors - they were gonna keep: Another samey one or - get this - Bacon and Eggs flavor. The B&E tasted great. It was a more unique flavor and was pretty good. Also hard to find because, hey, people were eating it up.

Combos decided to go with the samey boring one. Idiots...

The closest I can get are mini-eggs. They are the single best snack, chocolatey thing one can buy, but for some stupid reason they only sell them around Easter time. No-one gives a fuck about your seasonal timings Cadbury, it's not like pumpkin spice coffee or some shit, which taste horrible so you make it "limited time only" to make it sell, these are actually tasty!

Though it's possibly a good thing they're not sold all year round, cos they'd make me even more unhealthy than I already am

The original paper: https://marketing.wharton.upenn.edu/mktg/assets/File/Anderson-Eric%202015_02_05_Harbingers.pdf

From which I offer the following quote that should ensure you give up all hope.

Wharton Business School of UPenn said:
We show that some customers, whom we call ?Harbingers? of failure, systematically purchase new products that flop. Their early adoption of a new product is a strong signal that a product will fail - the more they buy, the less likely the product will succeed. Firms can identify these customers either through past purchases of new products that failed, or through past purchases of existing products that few other customers purchase. We discuss how these insights can be readily incorporated into the new product development process. Our findings challenge the conventional wisdom that positive customer feedback is always a signal of future success.
They go on to theorize and strongly suggest, with mathematical precision, that you have taste that isn't necessarily good or bad, but far out of the mainstream. Your very act of purchasing is a sign of failure for any mass market product.

So much for just having niche tastes.
Fuck 'em, fuck 'em with a rusty chainsaw, fuck 'em with a poisonous cactus, fuck 'em with [insert something horrible here]
This only proves that marketers are blight on society and should be purged.
Their end goal is for us all to eat at ButtFuckers and drink Brawndo.
Fuck them all!!!

Off the top of my head there are Pucker Pops, a Kroger grocery store brand of sour Popsicle that had a crunchy outside and a soft inside. They just disappeared one day and I haven seen anything like it since.

That's a very interesting theory. It's almost like the scientific version of the "jonah", the sailing superstition where every ship they're on is destined to sink.

On the plus side...I'm totally naming my new metal band "The Harbingers of Failure"! That way, expectations will be low.

Nickelback is my favorite band, so that should tell you all you need to know about people disliking what I like.

I am so sorry.

I had to stop putting vinegar on my chips at school because everybody hated the smell so much. I hated the smell of their ketchup and their cheesy things, but nooooo...I just had to put up with it! "Ketchup doesn't permeate like vinegar, Jack! Stop being such a creep!"

In America you can get spinach in Subway. We don't have the option here since it's not nearly as popular here as it is over there, but I wish it was because I think the taste really adds something.

Speaking of other things popular in America but not here that I wish were, grape drinks and root beer. And Pibb. And Wendy's.

Apparently Tesco has it on offer right now, but I can't pick it up anywhere nearby. :( Guess it's not as popular with others as it is with me. Those soft rocks make it. So soft and crunchy and with a cool, chocolatey centre...it's like having the feeling of the cool side of the pillow in your mouth- but with wheaty cereal!

Suppose you mean you only drink coke in Europe? Corn syrup's banned here. Can't say I remember noticing a big difference in soft drinks when I went to America, although Fanta orange had noticeably darker tinge. I spent most of my time in America eating Cheetos, which you sued to be able to get everywhere here but these days I only see it in Poundland.

I think I've seen it pop up a few times since then. I'm also pretty sure that a few local restaurants will put a flavor shot of vanilla in your Coke if you ask for it.

OT: Eggnog. Every god damned year they bring it back only to take it away again after only a month or so.

I enjoyed Dante's Inferno!
There I said it! I enjoyed it SO much! The music, the atmosphere, the daemon design, the controls. Everything was just so striking, so creative. I love playing it!

And I didn't think Silent Hill 2 was scary. Its a fine game, sure. Totally playable. But its not scary at all.

Snickerdoodles are over-rated!

And I think comic-books are a very immersion breaking way of telling a story.

Have at me!

Ice cream bars tend to cost at least $2 and aren't always that impressive, but up here in the cold North there used to be one called a Canadian Mint Bar (or something like that). Had the typical chocolate & peanut coating shell on the outside, over mint ice cream on the inside, over a final hard chocolate core. And the best part was it only cost $1.25, making it the cheapest bar in the freezer.

Huh. This thread started differently than how I expected. This I can get behind.

--------------------------------

OT: Just... just fuck everyone that didn't buy Berry Rice Krispies. Fuck them. Fuck them forever.

Like, if we're talking discontinued food and snack items, trust me, I've got a list (Why did you leave us, Pepsi Blue?!?!), but THAT one is probably the only one that made me feel genuine contempt for the mass market.

It's literally the best damn cereal I've ever tasted and it just... disappeared. Now the closest thing to it I've got left is Fruity Pebbles. FRUITY PEBBLES! When the fuck has that garbage tasted like anything other than Kool-Aid packet flavored newspaper shreds?

I used to get it all the time in grade school, and then it seemed to disappear. Then I went to college, and they kept a bunch in stock. I've seen a few gas stations carry them too. I don't know what the deal is, but I took full advantage of the situation when I was at school.
