Post any ideas you have for stopping the oil leak here, I realize nothing productive is really going to come from this thread, but I thought it would be a neat exercise. (One could argue that this belongs in forum games, but that seemed in bad taste)

This is not a thread to criticize, we are not professionals, and if someone posts an idea you think is stupid, don't go ape shit on them. These are "top of the head" ideas from people who are not professionals, remember that.

Here's my idea:

Dome with Pressure Releasing Top-Pipe

Put a new dome over it, with a pipe at the top that is open and has a large seal able valve.

That way the dome could sit on the oil leak, letting all of the oil through so there is no pressure forcing it off, with no pressure, a few days could be spent making sure it is absolutely secure to the ocean floor, using weights, welding, anything and everything to make sure it stays there.

At that point, the release valve could be closed.

Just put a bigger tube around it and lead the oil away from the water. Suck it into a new tank.

As for the oil already in the water. Set it on fire! >: D

Stopping what oil leak? Mind getting a little specific on us?

EDIT: Oh. I didn't know about this. Anyway it's okay, James Cameron will fix it later today apparently: http://www.waow.com/Global/story.asp?S=12579531

You know, you could always use the standard procedure for these things.
Just keep throwing money at it.
Even when it seems to become unstable, keep throwing money at it.
That's the way to win wars, why wouldn't it work for pipelines?

I think he's talking about BP's pipeline in the Gulf of Mexico.

I know it's a horrible idea and I'm a horrible person for wondering but yeah, I'd kinda want to see what would happen if someone dropped a match.

Apparently the new thing the news says will kill us all. My uncle was over during memorial day weekend and was going on about it like it was the fucking apocalypse.

I'm glad I haven't missed anything by shutting out the news and television. Same old shit.

only the one in the gulf of Mexico that has been all over every media outlet for the past month

and you cant burn the oil because that causes all sorts of even worse environmental effects

and is there any reason that saturation divers cannot weld some pipe before the leek and siphon the oil off that way or scrape it up off the ocean and dump it in a bunch of ponds on the land once it gets deep enough cart the oil off and drain the water off the bottom ready for more ?

pumped the corpses of BP's executives into the leak. Or... umm.... declare war on oil spills maybe.

The best way to stop a giant oil leak is to ignore it, and pretend it never happened... Just throw some money over it so no one can see it ;)

I think Stephen Colbert had the right idea here.

What are you talking about? BP haven't fixed it, and thousands of barrels of oil are still being spewed out a day. I don't think anyone has said we're going to die because of it, but the environmental and economic damage to the area is huge, and it's rising

Blame the president. Because every president gets blamed for disasters that were out of their control.
