Story over gameplay, what was the last game that you were addicted to because of its story/writing?

By addicted to the game I mean you just can't stop playing it until you have reached the ending of the story.

Mine was Phoenix Wright, I honestly had not play a game that had me clinched onto it and refuse to stop because of its story. The story is so engaging, characters are all generally likable, and all the twists and turns at the end just got my heart pumping for more! It left me with satisfaction that I rarely get from any other game, I was completely immersed in it and my nose was almost breathing out smoke, haha.

What's yours?

Mass Effect

The gameplay was only about average but I kept playing because I found the story very gripping.

EDIT: Ninja'd!

Mass effect and FFX. Both managed to really suck me in until I just had to know the end. This also happened with Fable and Fable 2. The Halo trilogy as well.

EDIT: Ninja'd by someone who was ninja'd!

The last game that had this effect on me was Mass Effect. Before that it was probably KOTOR...both by Bioware...huh. That must be why they are my favorite game developer :)

I think the fact that this has been the answer for the first four posts says something about Mass effect.

PS. Ninja'd the third!

The Half-Life series. The story and characters are just phenomenal, and just the desire to see where the story went next was what made me push through the hard and irritating parts of the games.

Massive Effect had me obsessed for a short a while, I am not going to lie, there were some moments that got me go, "HELL YEAZ!" Although I am not sure why, after I finished it, I completely stopped caring for this game...

Mass Effect, because the characters were actually likeable. (Except Kaiden, the fucker)
Kaiden? He's the one who most people I've heard talking seemed to find likeable between the two humans. I'm inclined to agree with them on this one. Most people see Ashley as the unlikeable one. What did poor old Kaiden do?

Shazam, Geneforge 5. Horrific graphics, occasionally frustrating gameplay, no WASD, but hands down some of my most favorite story telling of all time. The entire series along with Avernum found on the same site have some of the best story-lines I've ever played. Also take into account the development team numbers around 3 people.

One of my favorite things about this is the number of endings and differences in them. You can finish:
With the Extremist Rebels
With the Regular Rebels
With any one of the six Council Members, each with their differing levels of extremism, all with different ending story-lines
Or if you are truly an inglorious bastard, you can actually piss off so many people that the entirety of the Empire government and Rebel forces will join forces to slay you. I'm serious. That's just amazing.

Tales of Symphonia. Definately my favorite Tales game. The story was great, and kept the plot twists coming.

And, honorable mention to Mass Effect. And Kaiden never did anything! He was cool, yet I REALLY was torn at the almighty decision moment. Both humans were realistic, likable characters.

Overlord!! The gameplay was kinda repetitive but the story was so awesome I forgot about it
