Haha, raising your hand if you sent Kaiden to die.
-raises hand- And I'm proud of it!
And thats three votes for offing Kaiden versus three votes I've come across for offing Ashley (or at least not liking her.) Looks like I'll have to rescind my "most people hate Ashley more comment.

For me, it was Persona 4. I couldn't stop playing because I was really interested in the story and characters.

Oh, and No More Heroes. I kept playing mainly because I wanted to see who was the next target and how bizarre he or she would be.

I would say Fate/Stay Night, but I'm worried that might be cheating. I'd say Devil May Cry 3, but I was more addicted to the gameplay, and the story being surprisingly good was a nice bonus.

So...Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World.

Mass Effect, did not play that for the weird-running enemies. I'd like to mention FarCry 2 as well, but the gameplay is fun. I played Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth way back on the Xbox knowing the of shoddy trial-and-error pacing and awkward shooting, but I wanted to know what was on those corners. Why were they so dark?

Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer

Gameplay was alright but not great, graphics were alright but not great, plot was great but not... err... no wait it was a high-level ultimate fantasy orgy of excellence, there is no buts here, it was GRRRRRRRREAT!

Definitely Bioshock really since I was playing it not to long ago. I believe that the twist is brilliant and I've been hunting down all the recordings since they add a brilliant layer to it.

Ay yay yaiy, that's alot o' Mass Effects...

Me, personally, was MGS4. I don't care what anyone else says, I absolutely loved the story to MGS4. To further emphasize the point, I cried at the end of the game.

Manly tears of course.

Mass Effe- DAMN someone* beat me to it. I guess I'll go with Bioshock, the exploration and ambiance were more fun than the actual shooting but still shooting was fun.

P.S Mass Effect still earns a mention though. The characters are brilliantly put together

*the entire thread

Agreed. I'd go into more detail (and still might, if pressed), but you and I have discussed this before.

Kaiden? He's the one who most people I've heard talking seemed to find likeable between the two humans. I'm inclined to agree with them on this one. Most people see Ashley as the unlikeable one. What did poor old Kaiden do?
I actually liked Ashely. I mean, she was very Xenophobic, but you could tell that she was trying to get over that, and it was really more a product of her upbringing and the stigma attached to her grandfather than any actual belief that humans are superior.

Also, what's this? A thread in which I can harp on about Mass Effect without being the elephant in the room (if you will) as the resident fanboy? Nice!

Earthbound and Mother 3.
Those games have the greatest writing I've ever seen in gaming.

I didn't very much like the story and the characters were horrible.. Kaiden was a bastardized carth, ashley was a xenophobic ass, Liara was a cliched young scholar, Wrex was a fucking trenchcoater who channeled canderous a little to much, Garrius channeled that irodian whatever mechanic from KOTOR2. Don't ask me to explain but that is who I think of when I think of garrus. Of course a bastardized form of it. Tali was the only one who I quite liked as a character even if she was given the fewest lines. All the people who say joker was great.. -Flips them all off- He had something along the lines of 2 or so minutes of conversations and then cutscenes!

The Half-Life series. The story and characters are just phenomenal, and just the desire to see where the story went next was what made me push through the hard and irritating parts of the games.
This.

And Tales of Symphonia. The first one.

FFX. Kotor I & II had decent storylines, but it wasn't what kept me going. In FFX, I was able to overlook the fact that I spent days grinding in the lightning field, area, place, (sorry, it's been a few years) while occasionally playing Blitzball if I was going to be able to go through a good portion of the story without difficulty.

If I ever get a Gamefly membership, I'm going to have to give Mass Effect a try. Not many games get such high praise for storytelling.

Most of mass effects characters were blatantly ripped from their previous games.. Story is meh in my opinion and I see what bioware is doing. Moving from story to more action-y gameplay.

I may be one of the few who really enjoys the combat in Mass Effect, especially on Hardcore/Insanity. Still, on my first playthrough I was definitely more interested in the story than the gameplay.

Bioshock is a good example of a game that I hated, but had to finish to see the story through to the end. Worst $60 I've ever spent.
