Definetly Doom 3. Doom 3 was really sucky, but i just was gripped by the story. Plus i just had to see and kill the final boss. Plus plus i completed 1 and 2 so i wanted to complete every doom.

Mass Effect, as it seems was mentioned a number of times in the thread. I loves me some good backstory.

Currently? Chrono Trigger.

The main character died. DIED!

I know it's a little late, but I only ever got to play it for about the first ten minutes until just recently.

Other then that I'd have to say Silent Hill 3. It's probably the game I've played through more than any other.(At least 8 or more times) Without skipping the cut-scenes, too.

Team Fortress 2:
Nine mercenaries have come together for a job.
It's the middle-ish part of a century a lot like the one we just had. A simpler time. There are three TV stations, one phone company, and two holding corporations that secretly control every government on the planet. Each corporation administers its half of the world with a multi-disciplined army of paper pushers. For any problem lacking an obvious bureaucratic solution, mercenaries like these are contracted to address the situation through a massive application of force.
Now's your chance to Meet the Team. [http://www.tf2.com/movies.htm]
Depth like no other.

Mass effect had me for the most part...However, Resident evil 4 (yes you may laugh now) along with the Metal gear (especially metal gear solid) all kept me in with the story...

I don't really like most game plots. At least, not to the point where I was playing because of the plot.

Noteable exceptions:
Warcraft 3
Warcraft 2
Starcraft
Morrowind
KOTOR (Waiting for THAT twist)

Which reminds me, I need to continue War2.

Has anyone else played Rule of Rose? It plays kind of like Silent Hill but with crappy but realistic combat and item hunting to advance the story but the story is just so damn good that I can ignore the mediocre gameplay just to see what happens next.
I only played a little but I gave up early on but I remember it having a plot with a questions the game never acknowledges. Who on earth is piloting the blimp and when it is going to run out of fuel? Why isn't everyone freaking out about this? That made me worry more the talking the talking inanimate objects or the "unlucky girl" segments.

I'm debating to myself now, whether I want to say any of the Final Fantasies I've played (7-12, but not 11) - the thing I've found about them is that all of them have moments of really awesome storytelling where I've kept playing because I needed to know what happened next, sections where you're running around like a headless chocobo going 'what just happened? What the hell do we do with/without/about x, y and z?' But they've also all had long dragging bits, and bits that make no sense whatsoever (I never finished 8 - I just didn't buy the plot, which is saying quite a lot for me).

And then there's Crisis Core, which I kept playing because of the plot - not because it was great (it was utterly bonkers and mostly felt like an afterthought), but because I knew what it was leading up to and wanted to know how they were going to get there.

The thing that comes to mind that I actually played through mostly because the writing and story ideas were amazing was Grim Fandango. Which is a bit odd, but it was a total classic.

Assassins Creed. I thought it had a very interesting story, set during an interesting time period.

Mass Effect, Bioshock and Half Life 2. Bioshock had solid gameplay as well, but it was the story that kept me playing untill 3:00 AM in the morning when I bought it. Half Life 2's gunplay is good enough, but definatly nothing special, and it was also the story but also the atmosphere that kept me going strong. And well, Mass Effect is explained all too often now.

By addicted to the game I mean you just can't stop playing it until you have reached the ending of the story.

Mine was Phoenix Wright, I honestly had not play a game that had me clinched onto it and refuse to stop because of its story. The story is so engaging, characters are all generally likable, and all the twists and turns at the end just got my heart pumping for more! It left me with satisfaction that I rarely get from any other game, I was completely immersed in it and my nose was almost breathing out smoke, haha.

What's yours?
MGS4: no explanation needed............. actually i'll say why

when was the last time you would fantasize about a games story ?
when was the last time when you salute a game character ?
when was the last time you had your head blown of from a amazing story ?
when was the last time you fell of your seat after seeing a twist no one saw coming ?
when was the last time you'd play a game over and over again just to hear the characters ?
when was the last time you like a game character more then your best friend ?
when was the last time you would be full of emotion when something big happend on screen ?
when was the last time you shouted NOOOOO ! when a main character seemingly dies ?

i could just go on and on to how amazing this series story is.

next up
inFamous: all the twist in this story i can garuntee no one could see coming and the ending was damn right amazing i was speechless for 2 straight min after seeing the ending

Also, what's this? A thread in which I can harp on about Mass Effect without being the elephant in the room (if you will) as the resident fanboy? Nice!
Fret not, I will always be there too if there's possibility for Mass Effect fanboyism.

On topic though, Warcraft 3 and it's expansion.

Majora's Mask - I'm not a huge fan of time limits and some of the side quests were a bit confusing, but i just loved the creepy atmosphere.

Shadows of Destiny - Apart from seeing the same death animation and some minor bugs, the gameplay of this one was alright. But the story was just amazing, it incorporates so many philosophical elements.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey - The stealth and combat parts were very underdeveloped, but it's still one of my favourite games ever.

KOTOR 1 & 2 - Some of the side quests were poorly designed, especially in KOTOR2. But nevertheless, i still love em both :)

Persona 3 and 4 for me. No games have even come close to immersing me so far into a story or caring about the characters so much. When P3 ended I almost shed a tear and then applauded.

The first game that ever had me immersed in a story was Final Fantasy VIII. Granted, it was the first JRPG I had ever played but I liked Squall and Rinoa's whole relationship and was actually genuinely concerned at some points through the game about what was going on.
