- Piracy is copyright infringement, and also kind of a dick move.

- ACTA is neither a bill nor SOPA, and never will be either.

- Treating folks like crap because they're a different culture/religion/hat size/whatever to you is wrong.

- If you liked playing a game/watching a movie/ consuming another form of media means that for you, it was a good game/movie/et cetera. The experiences and opinions of others are irrelevant to that.

These and many others are things that I would have taken as nearly axiomatic before coming to the Escapist. To which I have to ask: What the hell, people?

I'll admit I like a good debate as much as the next guy, but I think some of these folks mean it! To those who also occasionally feel this way, I encourage you to post about the most "what the bloody balls are they even arguing about" moment.

Also, before anyone asks: Yes, it's a bit of a rant, yes, it's probably been done here before, and yes, I am genuinely curious about the question I posed.

I'm alittle confused on what place you're taking on those arguements and which you're saying Escapists take.

OT:
-Legallizing marajuana will destroy society
-"If you think about it science doesn't prove anything"
-Psychology isn't a real feild of study/medicine, just parts taking from other feilds
-Gays devalue marriage

My responces:
-No
-If you want to debate metaphysics let's do it, but I doubt you know what "metaphysics" is
-I'm not going to both
-Then don't think about them.

Apologies, I was unclear. I'm saying that I had assumed those sentences to be so obviously true that they had nearly been carved in granite while a sepulchral voice nearby dictated the words. I've seen Escapists argue both sides, though it's the ones who argue against them that kind of baffle me.

Ok, thanks for clearing that up for me, I'll go ahead and try to explain some. Keep in mind, Escapists are also known as Elitists (that's coming from a place of love, mods).

These come from my observations of my fellow Escapist and myself

1st) Some people, normally new members, like to debate the ethics of piracy, at least until the mods give them a suspension for condoning piracy. As far as I see it, piracy is (more or less) stealling and illegal, but not neccesarily copyright infringment until you try to sell it.

2nd)ACTA and SOPA are bills, but probably aren't going to pass (if they haven't already gotten shot down). People like to be cynical, though.

3rd)Haven't seen this so much. You may get attacked occasionally by people with completely different opinions, but that's to be expected on the internet. Most people are pretty tame. A bit of advice, don't try to start big discussions on a science/tech/whatever thread unless you know a lot about what you're talking about, unless you want all the bigger nerds correcting you. They're normally nice about it though, so don't be afraid

4th)There's two sides to this. The "I know what I like, I don't care what you think about it," and the "My opinion is fact." I think that the "I know what I like..." group is encourage, because it encourages different opinions and discussion--coming from someone who thinks the Kane and Lynch series is pretty fun. The "Opinion is fact" group is something you'll find anywhere where nerds group together.

Welcome to the Escapist. We're a fun and interesting group of people.
I'd suggest checking out Zero Puncuation, Unskippable, Critical Miss, Doomsday Arcade, The Big Picture, Escape to the Movies, Loading Ready Run, Feed Dump, the Daily Drop, and the rest of the hidden gems in the Escapist's archive between thread and reviews.

It was Yahtzee and his trilby that originally brought me here, actually. And no worries - this place is still far smarter than most other forums - not that that's any great compliment in this day and age, but do try and take it as such. The somewhat anal-retentive approach to debate of certain Escapists just weirds me out sometimes - and I am aware that such things are generally the minority.

Though ACTA still isn't a bill - it's a plurilateral agreement. See? I can nitpick too!

Anyway, tl;dr - this place is weird, detail-focused to an almost pornographic degree at times, and that's basically why I like it so much.

CAPTCHA joke: DSFact 147 - If you play while holding the unit upside-down, you'll get wrist cramps.

Oh, this is a serious thread? I came here to share my epic tale of my argument with a friend about whether being friend zoned feels more like a punch in the face or a punch in the crotch.

Captcha: smoke ernshy

I need to smoke a what?

Yea, it's baffling when people disagree with something you believe. You obviously have all of this figured out.

Anyone who tries to argue that they like things without giving any reasons. If you don't know enough about something to argue why you like it then you clearly don't know enough about it to have formed an opinion.

I also hate it when people use "it's just my opinion" as a shield from any form of debate. Once again, if you can't say why you think some way about something then you clearly don't know enough about the subject to form an opinion.
