What tone did you use? Have you argued with them in the past? Seems kind of weird they took a comment like that so seriously. Did you explain that the PS3 is important and you wanted to make sure you did it right?

I'm defensive about my console, too. It's an expensive thing and the games are a big investment into it over time. plus, I love my console!

I can see why you'd be worried about your job security. If that's how you treat people who are trying to help you out of the goodness of their hearts then christ knows what you'll be like on a bad day.

I move house a lot and my flatmate just knows by now to leave the electronics stuff to me, because I like to get the cables bundled up and handle my consoles with care. We arrived at this agreement by me saying 'I'll pack this stuff because I know how to do it properly, you can go get on with X, Y or Z.'

Do you see how my approach is civil and doesn't make me sound like a violent sociopath/twelve year old throwing a temper tantrum? Honestly if that's how you treat people who try to help you then life's gonna be pretty tough.

Edit: I did have one other thought. When you were coming up with your logic that a catty but forgettable remark would be better than the truth, did you ever consider just lying and saying you had someone else to help you, but thanks anyway?
