So, Escapist, fuel my paranoia.

About a half an hour ago, 11:30 at night here in Germany, two young men (I'd say mid twenties) showed up outside our apartment and started ringing the doorbell, banging on the door, and saying something in a loud and unpleasant voice (couldn't make out what it was, but it was short and to the point). We (my girlfriend and I) pretended we weren't at home, which was probably not convincing since the lights were on. They hung around for about fifteen minutes trying to get us to open the door, before eventually leaving.

We have no idea who they might have been. The GEZ (a private organization who like to and are allowed to come to your door and extort you for money for every single radio-, television- and internet-capable device you own) did come knocking a few days ago, but we are both exempt from payments for the moment (being low-income students) and, in any case, it's so bloody late we figure it can't have been them.

We weren't particularly loud this evening - we did vacuum and play some music, and since the vacuum was being annoying it was louder than usual, but this was around 8:30 and we had definitely stopped by 9PM; in any case, house rules clearly state we are forbidden from making loud noises between 10PM and 6AM - so they can't harass us because we were vacuuming before "quiet time" started. Would they do it anyway?

So, Escapist, what other grisly possibilities might have awaited behind that closed and double-locked door? Anyone else ever had strangers banging on their doors at this hour of the night? Anyone actually been crazy enough to open up? What would you do in this situation? Are there any legitimate reasons for banging on doors at 11:30 at night?

I bet they were double-reverse, ultra rapists looking to harvest your organs to buy KFC... or very efficient German Pornography.

Ambassadors of your local death cult. Or killers/robbers/rapists/all of these things.

I'd call the police if I were you incase they do it tomorrow or to someone else who isn't as paranoid/sensible as you, better safe than sorry.

There's so much glass in our house that anyone who wanted to could break in with tremendous ease. We live in a nice neighborhood and our front door was unlocked for years. The worst we've gotten were some of my brother's shady friends.

To be honest they probably got the wrong apartment, I'd say they were loansharks or the like. If they come around again, call the cops.

Wrong door perhaps? Happened to me before.

Do you owe anyone money? Have you pissed anyone off recently?

I had a drunk chick knock on my door at 2 AM once thinking it was her house. Was slightly tempted to let her in, she sounded convincing.

You should've gotten out your shotgun.

They would've scampered real fast.

Actually, out of curiousity... What are gun laws like in Germany?

Buy a gun if you can. Buy extra locks. Get a alarm system if you can. You know, make your house a fortress.
...here's what it takes to get a firearm in Germany:

...and if you use it in self-defense, you'll most likely get said license revoked and your firearm confiscated.

OT: next time just dial 112, fella. Those people were obviously up to no good... and people up to no good in Germany have an easier time getting firearms than law-abiding citizens.
...I never had to worry about that sort of thing living over there, living on a military installation and all. Though there was this one time when I was guarding a gate unarmed and some Turkish kids shot at me with a 9mm from a car...

Get naked. Open the door with an erection. Invite them into your 'love fortress' and make sure to call one of them 'big boy.' Never get broken into again.

Ya they usually tend to run away fairly quickly when they hear a pump action shotgun get loaded up.

It is better to be paranoid and alive than trusting and dead.

Also, what the hell is the GEZ? Are they an ISP? Where does the money go? By what right to they demand money for using the internet, or receiving transmissions? Here in 'Merica, we'd shoot someone for demanding we pay a monthly fee for having a car radio.
