In Texas, we do not have this problem. Answer the door with a handgun (and the obligatory shotgun/assault rifle stowed behind the door.) Be polite, talk about the weather. Remind the young men, that if you ever find them in your house you'll kill them without thinking twice about it.

So, Escapist, fuel my paranoia.
You were born a siamese twin, but if you stayed conjoined, you and your sibling would die. You had the greater chance of survival during an operation so your parents made the tough decision that your brother would be sacrificed so you could live. The doctors performed the separation but they neglected the possibility that your brother would survive because he would barely be able to breathe with his weak body. He not only survived but was abducted by a nurse desperate to have a child of her own. Fast forward several decades, your brother has lived a life of squalor and poverty has made him bitter and angry at the world. The nurse who has been raising him tells him the truth about his birth and how his parents chose you over him before dying of an illness. Now he and a friend plot to drive you insane to get revenge on you for stealing the life he should have had. That night was only the beginning in along drawn out plan to drive you insane and eventually kill you. Your paranoia should be sufficiently fueled.

They've totally mistaken you for someone in an important position of government hiding in a normal building and want to hostage your ass for mucho profit.

If they come back, call the police and make sure everything is locked.

To be honest they probably got the wrong apartment, I'd say they were loansharks or the like. If they come around again, call the cops.

Wrong door perhaps? Happened to me before.

Do you owe anyone money? Have you pissed anyone off recently?
I'm thinking these guys have the right idea. A repo man came to my door once, because the people across the street owed some money, and the idiot got the wrong house. It played out in a very similar manner to what you described, except it was even later at night, and we wound up opening the door and telling him he had the wrong house and needed to leave.

This is why I sleep within reach of a cricket bat. I'm not paranoid, I just don't want to bad men to come into my house and rob my stuff, kidnap my dog, hunt down my family members, slit my throat in my sleep and make it look like a suicde so the police don't hunt them down.

Get naked. Open the door with an erection. Invite them into your 'love fortress' and make sure to call one of them 'big boy.' Never get broken into again.
That sounds like a scene from a Borat or Bruno movie.

OT: Really guy, just call the cops. Oh, and the GEZ sounds like it would go over reeeaaallly well here in the States. People think Obama-care is bad, if the 'Merican GEZ ever shows up, everyone and their dog would be out on the streets going crazy.

How the heck did you guys allow such a group to exist anyway?

It could be that some local guys have gotten drunk then come home and got the wrong house, it's happened to me before. Still I would have called the police just in case.

They where barbarians. They wanted to loot and pillage your apartment.
Burning your women, raping your churches.

Or they where demon mobsters coming to collect their protection blood sacrifice.

You are too good at what you do my friend. Please do not knock on my door or call me with any more of your ideas. Now I'm wondering what little surprise my parents left for me to discover in the years to come.

OP: I'm going with

I would say what happened when some people like you described turned up at our house but recently I have not been held in high regards by the moderators and don't want to risk it further by describing what actually happened.

Therefore all I shall say are 3 words. Dad, ribcage, Police. (It wasn't my dads ribcage).

What would you do in this situation? Are there any legitimate reasons for banging on doors at 11:30 at night?
Here in the United States of America, my SiG-556 would have answered the door. Not me.

In your case, I suggest the police!

Note: It is possible that there was a terrible car accident and they needed help or something.

In such a case, I would have answered the door with great caution, and would not permit them to come inside. I'd just call the authorities and let them handle it

Snüp!
... Pepsi all over my desk.

OT: Nothing simular has happened to me, but whenever people ring the doorbell I usually mute any music or TV that is and approach the door slowly and silently. Then I stare out the peep-hole. I live in a building with a code lock, so fortunetly it's tricky for people that don't live here to get in. The downside is that my apartement is at groud level.
I never feel safe.

Doubt they would've hung around for 15 minutes if that was the case.

Some one tried to get 9into my Dad's house around 10 years ago. I took the shotgun and fired over their heads from the second floor.

That put an end to it.

I had a similar thing happen a year ago, except they weren't bagning on the door as much as thgey were using a screwdriver to break in. We (me + housemates) were in our kitchen (which was upstairs, window above the front door) and decided to boil the kettle and chuck it out at them. They ran off the second the window was opened but i think one guy got a bit of water on him
