Okay so there is a new band that just released their first album on May 25 called It's Alive. The way that I first heard about them was on an ad in the side of Facebook. Of all places unholy on the internet it was Facebook. Well I youtubed them and got their first single which I thought was amazing. [small]this is my opinion on the song so don't go and flay me out for the masses on it[/small]

So escapist what is the strangest place that you have heard about a band and what was the first song that you heard by them?

I first heard of Lights because I was passing by the TV and my sister had left it on Family Channel.

The first song I heard was "Saviour".

On two seperate occassions I've been in a public place (once in a mall in California, once by one of the tube stations in London) and been approached by some random guy I've never met before, who just so happened to be in a band, we talked, I bought a CD, new music found.

I gotta say Guitar Hero, even though that's a dull answer.

I heard about Kamelot from a Line Rider video on Youtube. They're a pretty cool band, and this is a surprisingly entertaining video:

Not a bad song, but I like a lot of their other stuff better.

2 guys got into a traffic accident, and they had the radio REALLY loud and it said "The song is, Always Hardcore by scooter" or something, and then I went home and youtubed it and listened.

I learned of the band Nightwish after watching an amazing amv on youtube. Unfortunately that amv is no longer available because its creator got suspended or banned or something. Anyway here is "The Poet and a Pendulum" by Nightwish.

I heard this song on one of those Adult Swim bumps. For those of you that don't get Adult Swim, they basically have these 5-10 second long 'bumps' of music during their broadcasting in between
commercials and their shows. I guess it's sort of a cool way of getting your attention before the show starts again.

Adult Swim also has an annoying tendency not to give the names of the artists they play, so it wasn't until like a year later I saw someone post a link to the song on a forum, and when I heard it I became really, really happy and then downloaded all of his albums, and then realized the guy that posted that video posts like every other Adult Swim bump song. Twas' a good day.

I subscribed to this one person on Youtube who made various music videos using clips from the live-action Transformers movies. One of these videos happened to have a song by the band Cryoshell. I didn't really pay much attention to it at first, but I later decided to look the song in another context. I discovered more songs by the same group in the process, even locating their official Youtube channel. Within hours, they went from "who are you?" to one of my favourite bands.

Many moons ago, I used to use various file-sharing programs and type random words into them and see what would come up and have it just grab the first 50 MP3s in the search results or whatever. Plenty of crap and duplicates, but I also found a bunch of fun stuff that way, like Blonde Redhead. I bought a bunch of albums that I would otherwise never have known about that just happened to come up by arbitrarily searching for the first thing I happened to see in the room, like "sweater".

Oh, also finding out original songs from samples and remakes helps me find great bands.

Like,

Led me to find out about the great band, Failure, who did the original,

And how Weezer's cover of this

Led me to MGMT, and their original version

Most music I discover because the band themselves (or their distributor) mail me a CD or email me a MySpace link. The rest are recommendations from other people who know my peculiar taste. Can't remember the last time I heard of a new artist any other way apart from these two.

I think the most bizarre one was a friend of mine gave me a CD of a band (who shall remain nameless for business reasons). She insisted that they were really good, but then that's what everyone tells me when they recommend a band to me so I took the advice with a grain of salt, especially from someone like her who has music taste vastly different to my own. I let the CD sit in my pile of "I'll get around to it" for about six months, when I finally got phenomenally bored enough to put the CD on, I thought they were brilliant and my label picked them up immediately. I felt really stupid for sleeping on it for so long. I leaned my lesson though, now when she recommends me something I listen straight away.

I saw this video for New Noise by Refused on MTV in the middle of the day, on a weekend over ten years ago. It was just strange to see a video on MTV at that hour. Also, it was strange to see such an amazing band/video as well.

One day i decided to stalk this girl that i know around town. When she stopped in a parking lot to complete her first errand i saw from afar that she had a pair of panties in the rear window, don't ask why. I thought "I must have them!" so while she was gone i ran over to her car real quick and broke into it.

After i crawled into the back seat she was coming back so i ducked down behind her driver's seat on the floor. It was a tight fit, believe me. She began driving somewhere else, but i could not see where since i was on the floor. I guess we were on a highway or something when i suddenly heard police sirens and it felt like she pulled over onto the shoulder.

Let me just tell you that i was pretty amazed that she got pulled over while i was in her car. So the police officer walks up to the door and starts his business. He took a look at me and i guess just decided i was her sleeping boyfriend or something, who knows. As this girl was giving him her info, a car raced by, threw a chocolate milkshake at the cop and shouted "Pigs tryin to blow my house down!"

Much later, i typed in those words into google and found out it was Cypress Hill. There you have it.
