So a couple of days ago I wrote a thread about school-related incident involving knives [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/forums/read/18.175601-Child-stabbed-to-death-by-a-fellow-student].

Here is a little snippet from the thread:

It turns out at a private school in Brisbane a 12 year old kid was stabbed to death by a 13 year old kid from his school. The Deparment of Education stated that "this is not becoming a trend" despite that a few weeks earlier, one student stabbed a classmate in the leg at a different school. Then they moved on to talk about a completely unrelated incident where a mother had stabbed another mother outside a school. The woman with the knife was holding a baby at the time. Oh, and yes someone at my school has been stabbed before (he was stabbed in the arm with a pair of scissors over a matter of $10)
Now it seems there has been another incident involving knives. And this time at my school. (again)

The basic lowdown is that at my school of 2000 students (Cherrybrook Technology High School) a year 8 kid bought a knife to school and threatened a few other students with it. So as a result the media was all over us, and our principle (Mr. Gary Johnson) told us to stay away from them. But that didn't stop every channel from 7 to 10 reporting on it. I wonder if the Department of Education still thinks this isn't becoming a trend?

So my question this time is do you think the years under yours are becoming more agressive? Should something be done about this?

Well, not in my school... but then again, I go to an incrediby posh private school which causes a huge fuss whenever they find someone with a little bit of weed (Leighton Park School), so I think my opinion is a bit biased.

That said, my previous school, one of the worst schools in my town, never actually had any stabbings... sure, it had alcohol/drug/tobacco, child abuse and even pedophilia, but no stabbbings.

Strange I know.

Well, yes, if I'm completely honest.

But it's not thanks to the media or anything, it's thanks to most of them being complete and utter douchebags...

If I see someone at my school so much as holding a butterknife, I'm going to run away. This is turning into a mayor crisis! We will all die!

It's just a matter of time before Apple sees our weakness and exploits it by starting to sell knifes instead of computers! We will all kill ourselves, and then Apple shall prevail!

Or as they will be officially called when they change their name... SKYNET!

[sub]Yes, I will totally continue making that joke[/sub]

I'm inclined to make a Paul Hogan joke but I'm actually in Brisbane so I won't. It's just bad taste.

WTF a knife? at least it wasn't another 'I don't like mondays' thing.

I vote for this. Kids today - usually the ones aged between 11 and 15 - have some sense of superiority and seem to have an impulse to act older than they are. They talk big, the goad and aggravate. They'll get put in their place when they're older, at least I hope so. Smug little shits.

Did that kid really think it was a good idea to do that while the media was still in a frenzy?

I mean bringing a knife to school is stupid, but doing it right after another kid was stabbed to death?

I understand that it would make his threats seem more genuine, but it is still a really stupid thing to do.

Ugh, coincidentally someone from my class was remanded in custody for carrying a knife in public, that's what I heard anyway since I was too busy cleaning up the kitchen in College. From this incident is does seem to be an increasing trend, altough it probably just is the odd occasional thing.

Ah i heard this on Triple M today. Thats crazy that you go to the mentioned school. I believe all this knife bullshit has got to stop. Teachers, principles and mostly parents have to be more cautious in dealing with these students and with the media.

'Coz we all know how the media hypes things.

Yes, they are getting more aggressive, and at the same time more stupid. A kid about half my size bumped into me and some friends on some stairs. He told us to " Get the fuck out of my way!" So I pushed him down the stairs.

There were only a few stairs. He didn't suffer any real damage. Unfortunately.

So, hate to bust this secret out, but in Middle School up to High School most of the (male)students had at least one knife on them. There weren't any stabbings though. :\

But it was in Texas...

Whatever happened to the good old recess brawls? So much less media frenzy worthy than knives.

Im going to have to go with Metal Detectors. Knives weren't a big problem when i was in school, Kids could just beat you up the old fashion way.

Honestly its only a threat/aggressive action if the kid is flailing it around like you said and threatening others with it. Personally I used to take knives to school all the time, accidentally when I was about 8, I reached in my pocket for a pencil (yes I was strange) and pulled out a little pocket knife (but quickly shoved it back down). Then I had one in my shoulder pocket during my high school years just for the hell of it if one of these "Bloods" ever went through with bringing "my gun to put a cap in yo head".

I don't think they are becoming more aggressive as I remember my older sister being stabbed in her knee with a pencil by some shit head kid who wanted her "USMC" sweater.

I agree.

It worked for the weapon-related problems at schools in Orlando, it can sure as hell work for this.

Exactly. The metal detectors themselves then act as a deterrent...sort of like cameras, when they can be seen.
