Greetings, Escapist!

I am undertaking a study of the Escapist community, using the forums, both on and off topics, as the basis for my findings.
I will be looking at how the gaming community (the chief population of the site) interact with one another and how these interactions create a legitimate virtual community.

Please feel free to respond with any queries or comments on the study. All opinions are welcome.

Thank You.

we are boringly polite, every disagreement leads to both parties getting putted on probation.

You've been here since July though... wasn't that enough time to spy on study us?
I have been a member, but never really participated or studied, I was more of a lurker, using what the site has to offer. When i found out what my assignment was I thought it might be a good chance to get a good insight into something I had only casually used before.

Your not going to learn to much. The Escapist is a laid back community. No meme's have started here in the forums that I know of.

What do you mean by how we interact? Do you have any hypotheses about what type of interactions you will be more likely to find. This study seems very vaque and generic.

You will probably find that this community is like most only slightly more mature and polite overall. There will also be a larger percentage of tech savvy people here than the general population. This does nto apply to me though, see my dropped laptop thread.

what is the goal of this study?

EDIT: you what study I would like to do. What avatar choice says about personality. Swaki's one always makes me feel confused and uneasy, yet I'm drawn to that picture.

Well, apart from the craploads of elitism, this is a fantastic site with an amazing community.

"One of the last safe havens on the internet for intelligent discussion" is what I like to say.

Well, the mods do encourage politeness and civility as a rule, but as long as you don't resort to posting something inflammatory or resort to personal attacks, the mods won't have a problem with it. If you have to choose between calling someone a misinformed holier-than-thou idiot, or poking holes in their logic, poke holes in their logic. Once probated, you can never be un-probated.

As for the OP, your study sounds quite interesting- feel free to ask us any questions you want in this thread; we're all ears. :)

The assignment is to join/observe an online community, using a certain focus as the basis for the research. Most of the given foci were mainly based around society and interaction.

I've reported both of you. Diagreements are unaccpetable. You must be polite to each other no matter what was said. jk

The study is a Virtual Ethnography, its more of an interpretive observation, and an attempt to understand both the individuals and the group. My focus is the notion of community, and how it is represented here.

i do know the rules of this forum and i obey them, i have only been in trouble with the mods twice, first time was my first post, i was young and had migrated from another, non quite as civil forum and i made an "first!" post, the second time was when i may have been a little to rough on a guy, personally i dont think so but it offended him and maybe i shouldn't have said some it, both times earned me 3 days in the naught corner.

but i am a good boy now.
