Thats bullshit. There are plenty of disagreements and arguments on this website which don't result in probation or worse. I just don't think that you're looking for them or you think that a disagreement counts as name calling, insulting and acting like a jerk.swaki said:we are boringly polite, every disagreement leads to both parties getting putted on probation.
I'm confused about this. How will a poll help anything? The OP is interested in how people react to other people which would be seen by viewing the community and recording what he found, not by asking people to select one of eight options from a poll. And discussion value? What exactly are you talking about?Furburt said:Well, Polls are handy for that, but remember to always include discussion value.
Its not so much as the gaming community, i shouldn't have written it that way, it is the Escapist community as a whole. It wont go into immense detail into the finer points of the escapist, because the study doesnt need to be so fine detailed, otherwise i would have too much to say for the restricted length of the essay.Fire Daemon said:I usually don't quote more than two people at a time and I never say that an opinion or observation is bullshit. If I don't understand something than I disregard it and go about my day or try to figure it out myself without help, on forums anyway. SO my question to you is, how do you know that this is how a virtual community interacts with one another. 4chan acts different to us, Forum Games and RP act differently to User Reviews and each user group is different in it's own way. Each has different rules, customs and expectations so how can you say how the gaming community acts when different components acts differently to others? I could act differently in his thread than I could in another, be different around other people. More hostile, more passive, more withdrawn, more anxious, more emphasis on satire, more rude, whatever, I could be completely different. So could anybody else.
I guess that what I want to ask is, are you looking at the entire community of the escapist as a single body and loose important detail or will you look at the detail intently and miss out and getting the whole package. Is it somewhere in the middle or am I completely offtrack.
Also, why? Why do this sort of thing? School I assume but I wonder what sort of school assigns this sort of homework.
It also rather difficult to create a survey with an eight option response in which one can only vote once and is only viewed by those who chance upon it and find answering polls interesting. The way I see it is that it would be easier to observe the forums to see how people react to each other rather than to ask people how they react to one another through a poll. The poll will not supply good enough information.Furburt said:The poll is for convenience, it's very difficult to accurately calculate survey findings without one. Rather than attempting to assess the opinions put forth in 50+ posts, it's easier to look at the percentages. It's convenience at the expense of intricacy, but it's a lot less work for mostly the same results.
The discussion value is so people don't say 'Where's the discussion value?'.
Also, I'd say he's doing it for college. Perhaps he's doing sociology.
And yes, I'm aware you said it was a lie, I'm just responding in case it's a genuine query.
The Escapist here can be rather different to the Escapist two clicks away but if you're only looking for a rough theme than I suppose all forums supply. The immense detail is where, personally, I find that things get more interesting (in nearly everything) but if you are restricted by length than alas I suppose you must ignore the finer points. Cyberculture sounds interesting though.TheInfamousOne said:Its not so much as the gaming community, i shouldn't have written it that way, it is the Escapist community as a whole. Its for university, a cyberculture unit.

Although given the inclusion of "gosh", there's at least a 65% chance of the quoted post being rightfully sarcastic.
