A couple weeks ago I asked the Escapist for tips on how to focus on school work and studying. Someone suggested classical music and I'm thinking I'm going to gave that a try. As classical music is outside my area of musical knowledge I'm wondering if you guys have any recommendations.

I also wanted to try some Smooth Jazz if anyone has suggestions for that. Or any other type of music you find helpful for studying.

Just listen to all the Jazz Masters. My Personal Favorites though are Charles Mingus and Miles Davis.

Maybe try some post rock.

If you like this I have more.

Don't listen to smooth jazz, for god's sake.
Not unless you actually enjoy boring stupid music.

Also you should totally listen to Frederic Chopin.

I would say, to stay away from classical music. Honestly, you should just listen to what you normally do. If you insist, Bach, Beethoven and the like.

Some laid back acid jazz or triphop like Portishead, Bonobo, Zero 7 or Kid Loco. Also a personal studying favorite: Carbon Based Lifeforms.

Go to OCRemix.com and download the album "Chrono Symphonic." It's a symphonic remix of some songs from the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, one of the greatest soundtracks ever written for game or film.

I also recommend Final Fantasy X and VIII (as well as VI and VII if you don't mind synthesized music), as well as the soundtrack for Super Mario Galaxy (seriously, it's freaking beautiful).

The Clannad soundtrack is pretty good like that too. Amazing anime: watch it and get the music.

Inception soundtrack. It makes you feel epic no matter what you're doing. That or Cast:

Very uplifting.

Soft piano music is always good. There's no lyrics to distract you.

I like Yiruma.

Years ago Nintendo Power released a CD filled with orchestral music from Super Smash Bros Melee. I still think it's some of my favorite orchestral music out there. Really great for focusing. If you can hunt down a copy, I would highly recommend it.

Listen to some Romantic Era Stuff. Night on Bald Mountain by Mussorgsky, Rite of Spring by Stravinsky, or anything by Chopin.

Just don't get too caught up in the epicness.

Avoid smooth jazz. At all costs. There's so much jazz that is SO GOOD, you don't need to resort to the smooth, pointless stuff.

Seriously, if it's jazz you want, throw on some John Coltrane, some Miles Davis, some Charlie Parker, etc. Want more contemporary stuff? I highly recommend the Bad Plus. It's quite tasty.

This is also quite true. Bonobo's a personal favorite of mine for studying to, particularly the album 'Days to Come'. Along that train of thought, there's some good stuff from artists like Blockhead and Skalpel that make for good study music.

My personal study music tends to also include some stuff with a little bit more bite to it (i.e. Ozomatli), but if you're looking for some quieter selections, the others I've listed should be good places to start.

Listen to anything by Sigur Rós. Its usually ambient enough that it isn't distracting, but still pleasant and powerful to listen to. And in keeping with the video posting precedent...

I have a number of things. Organ works by Bach, harpsichord sonatas by Scarlatti, Mozart sonatas, even Dvorák's 9th. I have a list on my iTunes called "Classical Listenin's" with all sorts of music from the past 400 years.

I don't have that much smooth jazz though. Although, when I listen to music while I'm studying, I just get my "Really Good Songs" list on and play whatever it will. This includes the occasional Iron Maiden tune, which probably pisses off my roommate quite a bit.
