So I have about 600 pages of workbook to do in the next week in preparation for an exam I am writing. It has been many years since I've studied anything, and I was never really good at it to begin with. It is important for me to do well on this test, and I understand that very clearly, but so far it has been extremely difficult for me to make any headway on the studying. So while I was wracking my brain over how exactly I could go about doing this, the idea occurred to me to make studying like a game; after all, I've sunk gillions of hours, many of them more tedious than studying, into games. I'm sure some of you have had this idea, or employed this tactic before, and I was wondering if anyone had suggestions about how to go about implementing "game mechanics" into my studying, to motivate myself further.

Any suggestions or pointers about this, or just about learning and studying this content in general, would also be much appreciated.

Whenever you learn something new, make a "Bing" noise and say your intelligence has increased.
Also test youself afterr a chapter, if you remember most/all of it reward youself with a cookie.

Sadly I know of nothing to help. The problem for me lies in that it's something I am supposed to do.

I find myself procrastinating from doing even things I like when it is expected of me.

As joking as it sounds, this is the way to make it fun. Especially the cookie part. Quizz yourself about the things you learned.

I read one of the Ig Nobel prizes, about structured procrastination. You might want to explore this, I know that I am the sort of person who could get a lot done in a short amount of time if there just that one annoying thing I want to dodge

good luck with your paper.

There's a site called Quizlet that has all manner of quizzes on a variety of subjects. I occasionally use it.

Write up some achievements for the studying and then achieve them :p

e.g. 'read 10 pages of notes - 10g'

'highlight important information - 5g'

...I don't know...might work if you're an achievement whore like me but I admit I have never tried it myself. I might try it next time because I cant study at all.

I think that this might just work out wonderfully for me. I write short fiction for fun, and the time that I get my most editing done is when I am editing a short story to put off writing the paper in the next tab over. And editing is something that I don't really enjoy reading, but I consider it important, though not as (objectively) important as finishing a paper.
