I'm going to go with something I haven't seen, yet. Code Geass.

Lelouch molds himself into the enemy of the world, and he even goes so far as to use his Geass on his own sister. He wins, but Suzaku, acting as his knight, dies in battle.

During a parade to take his enemies to be executed, Lelouch's alter ego, Zero, appear at the last minute. Zero is actually Suzaku who kills Lelouch. With his death, the world comes together viewing him as their mutual enemy and various people are able to get past their differences to achieve peace.

I know there is some debate on whether he died or not, but from what I understand, the writer has said he likes the ending with Lelouch dying better.

It looked so ugly, but it did so much right.
I'm not going to go into a list here, but I sometimes feel it's an overlooked series that deserves a lot higher regard.



For me "The Mist" felt like a perfect ending.
Yes, it was one that hurt, but it certainly stayed with you afterwards.

More seriously, Return of the Jedi did pretty well for itself with the exception of the Ewoks and pretty much nailed the final scenes leading into the credits as of the Special Edition (Which is to say with John William's "Victory Celebration" piece instead of "Yub Nub" and with Sebastian Shaw instead of Hayden Christenson as the ghost of Anakin Skywalker).

Yea I just finished watching that. It was the most adrenaline-pumping, heart-stopping ending I've ever seen. Holy crap it was amazing. I feel like I could run a marathon right now.

While I personally would have cut the show at the 3rd-to-last episode's end (Granite Slate), I'd say Breaking Bad ended pretty well.

I have no idea if anyone has read this book series, but I loved how the Bartimaeus trilogy ended. It wasn't the happiest ending I have ever seen, but regardless it made me feel, and frankly, that's hard to do.

{Basically what happens is that at the end of the book, after John Mandrake takes back up his birth name of Nathaniel, forsaking his previous success as a government official to be a better person and bonding with Kitty Jones, his previous rival, he merges with his long abused servant Bartimaeus in order to stop a djinn of unimaginable power bent on consuming the mortal universe through the machinations of an insane playwrite who bit off more than he could chew. They use a staff used by their most legendary magician (and some seven league boots looted from an almighty assassin) to dispatch all of the djinn similarly summoned by arrogant magicians and subsequently had their minds shattered by said djinn, and go to finish off the powerful djinn in what would most certainly be their final battle. They lure the monster to a giant iron structure and shatter it using the power of the staff, crushing the massive abomination beneath hundreds of tons of iron. Kitty resolves to leave Britain and goes to the newly freed America, and assumes that both Bartimaeus and Nathaniel are dead. What she doesn't know, however, is that in the last moment before the structure was destroyed, Nathaniel dismissed Bartimaeus, saying that he would just botch the job, and only Nathaniel would get it right. Bartimaeus is then sent back to his home, and the giant structure is destroyed, along with the monster and Nathaniel}

If you read that spoiler without reading the story, you won't understand a lot of it. But if you have read the books, you know exactly what I am talking about. Normally, I say that I wouldn't have ended it that way, but me saying that is an insult to the fact that it still ended in such a way that I wouldn't have wanted it any other way.

I understand that there are so many other stories that ended just right, and this is not my only choice, but as of this moment, it is the most powerful to me, and I respect it.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance. You had the normal game neding where you could defeat the final boss but there were also other things added to your ending for the way you played the game. Probably the best story out of the X-men Legends/Ultimate Alliance series. I would say X-men Legends but they pretty much skipped over Magma in the second one. I'm still holding a grudge. I only got to use Magma half way though legends and she wasn't in the second game.

Pokemon Gold and Silver still has my faovrite endings. You beat the main game then you go to fight Red. It was actually suppose to be last pokemon game and raps the series up. All the Main NPCs story's are rapped up and even in Heart Gold and Soul Silver, You find out the guy who steals profesor Elms pokemon is Giovanni's son.

If they ever explain why Jack and Roland didn't come back alive Borderlands 2 would have a great ending. The re spawn system is actually apart of the story line. I understand if Roland died because Jack turned the re-spawn system off for him, since his company owns it but it should still work for him.

I'd agree with Blackadder, Code Geass, and The Bartimaeus Trilogy, all were especially memorable endings.

In literature, "To Green Angel Tower" by Tad Williams was a magnificent ending to a great series.

From anime, Death Note had an extremely satisfying ending. But none of these can compare to the end of School Days, which was simply perfect.

I liked how Star Trek: TNG ended. It was a sweet ending and ended things but didn't really end them.. If that makes any sense.

Seconded. The final line of "and the sky's the limit" with the fade-out was perfect.

Also, I would nominate the final episode of Babylon 5. Sleeping in the Light was just so well done, that it still brings a tear to my eye every single time I watch the final segment.

Games with good endings: Bastion, Halo 3, Mass Effect 1, Jade Empire, Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer.

Games with endings I really couldn't stand/accept, because they were dumb: Bioshock Infinite, Mass Effect 3, Fallout 3 pre-Broken Steel

Anime:
Puella Magi Madoka Magica's ending was very good and fitting for the show. (before they made Rebellion, which was good but had less of a completing ending)
As previously mentioned, Code Geass.
Last Exile's ending was really cool before that unnecessary sequel Fam, the Silver Wing, did its best to screw it up.

Books:
Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn Trilogy's ending felt right to me. Same with the Wheel of Time (dammit, I still want more Mat Cauthon, though).

The Codex Alera's another good one.

I like how the show Leverage ended. Wrapped up all the last few plots and it was the first episode on Season 5 that actually felt like the old seasons.

Hm...what else? I don't know. I'm usually happy with endings so long as they are happy endings, or the sacrifice was worth it. I don't like endings that go for depressing, "This is how life really is," type of things or where the hero doesn't really win at the end. That's not my type of thing.

Sorry, I might have misled you. I have seen the series. In fact, I've watched it a couple times from beginning to end. I meant that I haven't seen it in this thread yet.

But, yes, it was the perfect ending for the series. All the main characters both got what they wanted, but had to change. Even Suzaku got what he wanted, but realized he had to let go of some of his naive ideals to accomplish those goals.

I know a lot of people will probably disagree with me on this, but I think that Chuck ended fantastically. However, many fans said that it ended with no proper resolution and that the show deserved better. While it didn't necessarily end with "happily ever after" and it was open to interpretation I feel that it is so heavily implied by the final few minutes that being as divisive as it ended up was a bit of a shock. While I understand those who think that the show ended poorly, I personally think it was amazing. I can't/won't explain it here, because the show does a much better job of it than I could.

Battle Angel Alita: Last Order.

Really great manga, story would be to complicated to explain fully, but at the end of it, Alita, whose brain had been taken out and replaced by a computer chip that had a copy of all her memories, ends up going to Mars to find out the mystery behind her past.

However, she knows she most likely wont come back from it alive, and thus would be unable to fulfill her promise to Figure Four, her boyfriend she met on Earth, so she has her original organic brain put inside a organic clone of her body, since she, Alita 2, has an android body, so that the "real" her, the real "original" Alita in her actual organic brain, the Alita that fell in love with Figure in the first place, could spend the rest of her life happy with Figure Four, and her friends back on Earth, without having to know all the pain and suffering she, the brainchip "second" Alita, has gone through in the months since her brain was removed and replaced with a computer chip.

Its a really sad ending, even though technically everyone gets what they want.

But I think it ended like it should have.

Casablanca

I know it is an old, old movie, but it still holds up as one of my favourites. To me, nothing (fictional) comes close to the sense of satisfaction I get from that ending. Honestly, 90% of films would have the hero get on that plane with the girl, but instead, he puts her on it with ANOTHER MAN! So that he can go off and probably die in the war. How heroic is that?

Also, Godfather part III and no I am not kidding (although the rest of the film was kinda mediocre)

Michael watches as all the shit he pulled comes back to bite him in the ass and kill his own daughter. This is the way Breaking Bad should have ended (Breaking Bad was still a good show, don't get me wrong)

My new answer will be the ending of Enter The Dominatrix DLC for Saints Row 4, and I'm only half kidding. You've gotta play it to get it, but holy shit that was a amazing.

Everything about SR4, including the two story DLCs, had me laughing until I thought I'd die from a lack of oxygen. But you're spot-on about Enter the Dominatrix. It takes my top spot as the best DLC ever released for any game. And that ending? I can't get through it while drinking a beverage unless I want to wipe off everything within spitting distance.

On the opposite side of the emotional spectrum...

The ending of Lake Mungo is among the most perfect in the history of the horror genre. It has no cheesy jump scares nor a ham-fisted "the end, or is it? (*wink wink*)" final scene. Instead, the conclusion respects the movie's characters as well as its audience's intelligence. Unlike the ever-growing plague of schlock purporting to be "horror," Lake Mungo ends without a single trace of ambiguity - you KNOW what happened to everyone - but it's comfortable with allowing the characters to transition from one stage of life to another without using cheap Michael Bay wizbangs to delineate the two.

Better yet, Lake Mungo is the only horror movie that kept my eyes glued to the screen, gave me a really good scare (a well-choreographed, QUALITY scare), left me satisfied with how it ended, and then, by complete surprise, made me tear up at the start of the credits. I did NOT see that last one coming. That's how good the ending of the movie is.

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective.
Every loose end is perfectly tied up in a way that is satisfactory and ties into the story perfectly while still leaving it open for a sequel.
