Lambi reviews:
Final Fantasy VII vs. IX

Right then. This is my very first review.
I decided to make a Vs. review for no particular reason. (Other then to distract myself from FF X <_<)
This is just for fans of Final Fantasy or just RPGs in general, so leave your hate at the door or just don't come in. You have been warned.
Any TL;DRs will be delt with immedietly. (Something I learned from Sassafrass)
WARNING: There WILL be spoilers, so either leave now or enjoy the review.
On to the review.

As you may have guessed, this is a review to 'compare' FF VII with FF IX. Personally, I reccomend you play them both if you like RPGs or just JRPGs. I do recommend IX over VII, though.
Let's start with the characters.

First off, there are the two main characters from each game, Cloud Strife and Zidane Tribal.
Cloud is an Ex-SOLDIER while Zidane is a member of the thief guild Tantalus.
The other characters are as thus:
In VII, there are Barret Wallace, Tifa Lockhart, Aerith[footnote]It's AERIS, ya moron. For the sake of not being 'corrected', she will be called Aerith throughout the review, even though I hate it when she is called Aerith[/footnote] Gainsborough, Red XIII, Cait Sith, Yuffie Kisaragi, Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind.
In IX, there are Vivi Orunitia, Adelbert Steiner, Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, Freya Crescent, Quina Quen, Eiko Carol and Amarant Coral.
Were you expecting a little background with each one? Fiiiiiiine...

FF VII:

Barret Wallace, a giant, black man riping with muscles, a machinegun for a right hand and a beard and mohawk Mr. T would be proud of. He has a daughter named Marlene. We find out later that she is not his daughter, but I'll get to that a little in the review.

Tifa Lockhart, a childhood friend of Cloud's. They grew up in Niebelheim, but were sepereated when Cloud joined SOLDIER.

Aerith Gainsborough, the love interest of FF VII. She begins the game as a flowergirl, but later on we find out she is the last of a race called the Ancients.

Red XIII, a lion of some sorts with a mohawk. He is a test subject of Hojo, a scientist working for Shin-Ra, and has a human grandfather called Bugenhagen.

Cait Sith, a stuffed cat toy sitting on a very fat moogle toy. He is controled by [Insert name here], who works for Shin-Ra. He betrays the group, but soon realises his mistake.

Yuffie Kisaragi, a ninja whose hometown is Wutai. She is looking for Materia to restore her town to it's former glory. She also betrays the group and realises her mistake afterwards.

Vincent Valentine, an Ex-Turk and looks almost like a vampire, he also has the ability to turn into various monsters. Before he got turned into a monster-changing vampire, he worked for the Turks and fell in love with a scientist named Lucretcia.

Cid Highwind, an old pilot whose dream is to get into outer space. He was hired by Shin-Ra to fly one of their rocket ships into space, but he canceled it due to his assisstant, [Insert name here], being still near the bottom of the rocket before it launched.

FF IX:

Vivi Orunitia, a black mage with only the sweetest intentions. He is a little clumsy and gullible, but he's a total sweetheart.

Adelbert Steiner, a knight serving Queen Brahne, Garnet's stepmother. He puts his trust in Queen Brahne and could never imagine her doing anything bad, or at least anything bad against Garnet.

Garnet Til Alexandros XVII, the love interest of FF IX. She is a princess who runs away and asks Zidane to kidnap her.

Freya Crescent, a dragon knight from the city of Burmecia. She's looking for her lost love, Sir Fratley, because she won't believe the rumors of him being dead.

Quina Quen, a strange being with the appatite of 20 men or more. It's never established whether Quina is a male or female. In cutscenes, Quine is always refered as s/he.

Eiko Carol, a six-year old girl living alone with a group of moogles. She is the last of a tribe of summoners who lived where she lives now, Madain Sari.

Amarant Coral, a wanted thief for a crime he didn't do. He follows Zidane to understand him better.

You'll get to know these characters better as we advance the stories.

Battle mechanism:

VII and IX have very similar battle system. VII has three characters in battle, while IX has four. Then there is the difference in how the characters use their different abilities.

VII has a very simple system: Materia. Everything, except attack and item, is determined by what Materia each character has. There are 5 types of Materia. Green magic Materia, red summon Materia, yellow command Materia, blue support Materia and purple independent Materia.

IX has a little more complicated sysem, but not by much. Skills the characters can learn are gained by wearing specific equipment and gaining AP for battles. This might cause you to have crappy equipment equipped and never selling it, but it's better to have too much equipment then to have accidentally sold the only equipment some one skill was on.
Each character has his unique skill in combat in IX. For example, Zidane has Steal while Vivi has Black Magic.

There's also the Limit Breaks in VII and Trances in IX each character has.

VII has two ways of learning Limit Breaks. One way is by defeating a certain amount of monsters until a Limit Break is learned. The monsters must be defeated with each character individually for them to learn their Limit Break. The other way to learn a Limit Break is to use the Limit Breaks (that they learned by deafeting monsters) a certain amount of times.

IX has individual ways for each character to learn his or her Trance. Some only have one thing different when in Trance, for example Quine Cooks enemies (enemies at 1/4th health) instead of just Eating them (enemies at 1/8th health). Some Trances are dependent on what the character has learned, for example Zidane has skills he can use out of Trance and when he Trances the skills become Dyne, changing them into something else.

The other difference between Limit Breaks and Trances is that when you use Limit Breaks, you only use them once after selecting them. Trances, however, have a little bar beneath the HP of each character and can be used several times at once.

The Beginning Of Each Adventure:

So now let's get to how each game begins. I'll write about the beginning until the first Save Point for each game.

VII has a nice cutscene that begins in space, it would seem, then cuts to Aerith in a city, Midgar. She walks towards the camera, it pans back slowly at first, then fast, showing us the city and we get the title of the game as a light hits the screen. It stays for a few seconds before the camera pans back to the city, but to a different location. A train is stopping and out come some bandits. Barret and Cloud are shown coming out of it too and after walking for a little while, we get the first battle of the game. Nothing hard, and after the battle we continue. You talk to the bandits you seem to be following and then get a chance to name Cloud. Barret cuts in and then a chance to name him is given. A little walk through what seems to be a reactor and then we get to a locked door. Barret joins you in battles and you go down a lift. Nothing very exciting, but the music is nice. In the lift, Barret tells you about how the Shin-Ra are destroying the planet with these reactors, but Cloud doesn't give a damn about that, he just wants to finish the job so he can get his pay. Several stairs and running later, we get to the first Save Point in the game, a question mark with a little glow at the bottom.

IX also has a nice cutscene. A storm at sea is shown and a lone boat with a girl and a woman is out at sea in the storm. After a minute or two of that, we see our love interest of IX, Garnet, seems to have fallen asleep on a chair as she suddenly wakes up and the storm at sea was a dream. Garnet opens up a window and is in a castle. Doves are seen flying around and the view is changed to the sky, where an airship is flying. We go inside the airship and Zidane is seen going down a pole and into a room. Here we gain control if him in a dark room. He lights a match and we have him light a candle (which for some reason lights the whole room). A chance to name Zidane and then three of his friends, Blank, Marcus and Cinna, enter the room. A little chat and then the first battle of the game. All four of them can steal and it's nice to have four characters to control instead of just one for the first battle. When the battle is over, we see it was their boss, Baku, with a mask on that they had attacked. We go into the room besides this one and a plan is explained to us. A plan to kidnap the princess, Garnet Til Alexandros XVII. The airship is a theater ship, it would seem, and they are about to do a play called 'I Want To Be Your Canary' to distract everyone from the kidnapping. After the plan is explained, we get another FMV cutscene showing the city of Alexandria and the title of this game. The cutscene finishes and we gain control of a black mage called ????. We later find out it's Vivi. Running around the city, we get bumped by a rat faced kid. He runs away and we continue. Going to the ticket booth, Vivi shows his ticket, which is for the play 'I Want To Be Your Canary', but it seems to be a fake. The ticketmaster takes pity on Vivi and gives him cards, telling him to find Alleyway Jack to teach him how to use them. We go into an alley and Vivi falls on his face, maiking a nearby signmaker mess up. He finishes putting up a sign and goes away. The rat faced kid comes back and wants Vivi to help him. Vivi accepts and the rat kid steals the ladder the signmaker was using. After he goes away with the ladder, Alleyway Jack comes and if you aren't quick enough, he'll steal some gil from you. If you talk to him before he is able to steal from you, he'll teach you how to play the card game played in IX. Continueing from where the rat kid was, we go into a steeple. The rat kid asks us to go up a ladder to check for dangers. As we are about to go up the ladder, a moogle lands on Vivi's head. A little talk with it, the rat kid goes up the ladder and another moogle comes into the steeple, named Stiltzkin, who is about to travel the world. He leaves and the rat kid is impatient because he asked Vivi to hurry up. The moogle asks us if we want to save our game. The moogles act as Save Points in IX.

That was alot. Now to continue the stories. And don't worry. I won't go into that much detail for the whole review.

VII:
After having saved, the first boss appears. Nothing really hard, but a challenge non the less. After he is beaten, a 10 minute timer appears, indicating that the reactor will blow up in 10 minutes. We get out in time and see the reactor explode. We talk to a flower girl, Aerith, and continue to go away from the reactor. Cloud now has to either run away from Shin-Ra guards or fight them. After that he jumps on top of a train and gets into it where the others are. Shortly after the train stops and we must go to 7th Heaven, Tifa's bar, where she and Barret's daughter, Marlene, are waiting for Cloud. Cloud and Barret fight, using words, and Cloud's about to leave when Tifa reminds Cloud of a promise he made to her when they were younger. Barret comes and gives Cloud his pay for having helped them on the mission. Everyone goes to sleep and the next morning you can get a tutorial on Materia. Going on the train again, we are ready for the second reactor-blowup mission. After a while, an alarm goes off in the train and the team must hurry through the cabins. They manage to do that and must walk forwards through the subway tunnel. We must go down a shaft to an area with many ladders. Once we go up the right ladders and shafts, we get to the second reactor. It's a similar thing from the first one, except we are treated to a small flashback when we get to the core of the reactor and have to push a button at the same time as Barret and Tifa to get out of the reactor. Once outside, we are greeted by President Shinra, head of Shin-Ra, who sends a robot after the team and we get our first boss battle with boss battle music. When he is defeted, he explodes and leaves Cloud hanging. The reactor begins to explode and Clud falls down what would kill anyone, but he lands inside a church. Seems the roof and flowerbed he landed in broke his fall. The flower girl, Aerith, from earlier is here and wakes Cloud up. They are talking when Reno of the Turks interrupts. He is there to get Aerith. For what, we don't know. As Cloud and Aerith run away from Reno and his little group if Shin-Ra soldiers, they get shot at and here we find out she is an Ancient as one of the soldiers yells that she is getting away. Here, either Cloud can save Aerith by throwing down the right barrels or Aerith can fight off the soldiers. When they get together again they escape through a hole in the ceiling. They then run through random junk until they get back to ground. We get to the Sector 5 slums, where Aerith lives with her mother.

IX:
Going up the stairs, Vivi and the rat kid go on the rooftops to get to the show and the rat kid asks Vivi for his name. Then he tells us his name is Puck. They continue along the rooftops until they come to a gap, which Puck uses the ladder so they can see the play. Another fantastic FMV cutscene and the play begins. Some scenes are shown and we get a fight. After the fight, the play continues normally until Zidane and one of his friends, Blank, get into a swordfight, where we get a little QTE (a fun one). They then go into the castle and beat two guards up so they can wear their armor sothey can kidnap the princess. We go up the stairs and a hooded girl comes through a door. Zidane checks her out and then she runs away, knocking Blank down. They run after her and we cut to two small clowns who like to speak as ridiculously as possible. They go to the queen to tell her Princess Garnet is in danger. Queen Brahne tells Beatrix and Steiner to go search for her. We get to meet our 3rd main character now, Steiner, the captain of the Pluto knights. We go to search for every Pluto knight and then go up a tower. There, Steiner sees Zidane chasing after the hooded girl, who is Garnet. A funny FMV and then we continue chasing after Garnet as Zidane. She runs into Ruby, the female member of Tantalus. She gets a little moody with Zidane and Garnet gets away. In the next room, Garnet asks Zidane to kidnap her and Zidane accepts. Cinna comes to help them escape from Steiner who enters the room just after they leave it. They go down a hatch in the floor Cinna had prepared. Steiner tries to go after them, but a Pluto knight stops him by saying that he will go down instead. He gets stuck and Steiner leaves. We cut to Zidane, Garnet and Cinna trying to escape, but Steiner stops them. The Pluto knight enters the room and tells Garnet she shouldn't worry and they'll get her safely away from Alexandria. After fighting Steiner, Zidane and Garnet get away. They view is cut briefly to the play and then back to Zidane and Garnet. They hop on a lift that goes to the stage and Steiner goes on another lift to the stage. They come up in the middle of the play and Baku is confused slightly. They decide to continue with the play, seeing as Queen Brahne is watching. Steiner is very confused since he has no idea the play is still running. Garnet participates in their plan and starts playing in the...play. A beautiful (and, for some of you, tearjerking) moment comes and Garnet lies in the floor. Queen Brahne cries over the scene and wonders where Garnet could be. Vivi and Puck are standing close to the stage to see the play better, but get caught by the Pluto knights and Vivi accidentally enters the stage. The Pluto knights follow him, he jumps over Garnet and tries to use a fire spell on the knights, but hits Garnet's hood instead, which she takes off immedietly. They try to leave, but Steiner is stubborn as always and fights them with the two knights. He loses and Tantalus readies their get away. Yet another FMV plays, where we see Tantalus trying to escape, but Brahne shoots anchors at the airship and then a Bomb monster. Another fight begins, with Steiner as the opponent and the Bomb floating behind him. He doesn't notice the bomb and doesn't listen to the others when they tell him about the Bomb enemy. When he notices, the Bomb explodes (duh) and brings the airship down. It crashes into a forrest and everyone is ok, strangely enough.

Like it so far?

And I'll tell you when I've read it, Lambi.

M'kay?
[sup]Spotted the footnote. I've always wondered why some say Aerith and others Aeris.[/sup]
