[sup]My full name is Þórhallur B. Kjærnested. The B. stands for Brynjólfsson. Basically, all Icelandic children that don't have a father with family names (as we call them) get either 'son' or 'dóttir' (daughter) along with their father's first name added as their last name. The reason I have both is because it's my mother's family name. I've had it now since...I was 17 or 18. If the mother has the family name, it has to be added when the baby is named. If the father has it, it is automatically added to the name and replaces the son or dóttir. Simple, right?[/sup]
