My brother did not like Chrono Cross. Did he play all of it? No. Does he remember how much he played? Not really. Is it every bit as good as Chrono Trigger? My brother and I played Chrono Trigger at the absolute height of impressionability, when nostalgia is at its strongest, so, not really.
Also, not a single word about the heart-breakingly gorgeous art or soundtrack. I guess that, like the game in general, he doesn't think anything could top Magus's theme.
So, I guess my contribution to the topic is to mention how nostalgia can sometimes seriously skew a person's opinion of a game.
Perfect example: Pokemon. For some reason, there's a fair chunk of gamers who think the Pokemon series outright SUCKED after Gold/Silver, and they'll happily shout that opinion from the rooftops. How much would you like to bet there's an even crazier sect of those same nostalgia-worshippers that hated HeartGold/SoulSilver, even though they're the EXACT same games as back then, just with some more stuff thrown in?
Even funnier are the people who keep saying that World of Warcraft is ruined, and they've been saying that even before the first expansion. Meanwhile, subscriber numbers keep going up.
Here's a great one: Hating a game because you hate the people who play it.
Halo, for all the flack it gets, is one of the games that defines its genre, and is likely THE most popular online game other than WoW; think what you want of it, but it is FAR from being a bad game. And yet, there are some people who might hate the GAME because a bunch of frat boy douchebags happen to like it.
