so i was talking to this person i know today... and she was bawling because steve jobs died. dont get me wrong, he was a great innovator, but i didnt know him personally so i shall not grieve. but what irritated me was that she was bawling about this guy she doesnt even know. i had to actually explain to her his innovations and his roles in the world. her replies are as followed...

"i dont care, he was part of monsters inc and i love that movie"
"im crying because he died"
me: why? you didnt know him. you dont know anything about him...
"because he was on tv and thats why im sad"
me: oh, so because he was on tv that automatically makes him better than you? does that somehow make him some kind of god in your eyes?
"yeah!"

it is at this point that i stopped talking, blinked a few times, grabbed the bridge of my nose, and sighed loudly.
just... i dont... i mean... seriously?

Lack of capitalization makes me irritable, especially when the culprit professes to be annoyed by stupidity.

And it's a sad occasion when the world loses a great mind. I wasn't over the moon when Kurt Vonnegut passed away, despite the fact that I didn't know him.

... never mind that! Did you see how many perfectly edible apples were wasted in so-called 'tributes'?! Good grief...(!)

Anyway, Steve Jobs was in Monsters Inc?! First I've heard of it...

Still, I was vaguely upset when Alec Guinness died... but all I did was rewatch the Star Wars films (there are only three...), reminisce about his Ealing Comedies career, decide I wanted to get the George Smiley stuff and that was pretty much it. *shrug*

I quote my friend: 'People should be respected for who they are, not what they can give you'

Yes, he is an idiot. But he's still my friend.

Personally, I don't mind people being stupid, as long as they can admit they have been when it becomes obvious. Everyone fucks up sometimes, and the first step in correcting a mistake is acknowledging it.

I get bit irritated when others are stupid sometimes, but as long as they acknowledge their stupidity when it happens, I don't mind. It's those that refuse to accept that their thought-processes at that time were on a coffee break (or sick leave) that infuriate me.

For example, a few months ago in my area, 5 teenagers crashed into a tree and 4 of them died. The driver was on his probationary license (the one you get before your full license where you can drive solo, but with restrictions).
The driver was intoxicated (illegal on your probationary license, limit of 0.05 BAC on full), was carrying too many passengers (1 passenger between the age of 16 and 22, excluding family and a work carpool is the restiction) and was going 60 kilometers over the speed limit(140 KM/h on a major road that is 80 KM/h).

These hooning idiots were hailed as martyrs by the local bogan (basically low-class) community. The "admirers" used to gather around the spot of their death, even weeks later, doing burnouts, drag racing (and this is on a major road, mind you) and just sitting by the destroyed tree until the cops told them to get lost.
If you seriously stupid enough to think they died a martyr's death, maybe you should follow suit. The world can do without your mentality.

That sounds perfectly reasonable actually. Respect a person for who they are not what they provide.

In that sense, it sounds reasonable, but unfortunately my friend means it in a way that the amount of respect you give towards a person is based on something such as their culture/sexuality/appearance etc. rather than their actions or personality. For example (seeing as my friend has some sort of dislike towards homosexuals) should a gay person act really nice towards him, my friend would base his respect towards that person on their sexuality and not on whether they are actually a nice person or not. I think I may have quoted something from my friend that actually sounds reasonable (compared to some other things he's said), but he is quite a bigot. That's pretty much the point I'm trying to get across. And bigotry is stupid.

I too get irritated by stupidity. An example being:

I was at School and there was a girl in my class talking about this Utopia project she heard about. She said to her friend "They want to get rid of money, It makes sense because money doesn't grow, it's just paper and the value of money never changes". I slammed my fists on the table when I heard that. My mate turned to me and said "I know, I know, It's hard to sit and listen to an idiot talk about Communism like it's a hip, fresh idea. Keep it cool, she's retarted".

That girl was an idiot, and still is.

I sort of stopped dividing people into smart and stupid, the world has enough smart people in it as it is. what we really need is kind people and as long as someone is a good person I could not care less whether he/she is stupid, gay, black or white or anything really.

He founded Pixar. We owe him every Pixar film ever.

I'll admit, I was saddened that he has died, I think he was very intelligent and was bold enough to take risks in a world where most companies think change is suicide. However, its not taken away from my day. Its not a big deal.

I'm not fussed about a lack of knowledge, a lack of a will to learn however pisses me right off. This is because in all honesty there are areas of life and knowledge in which we could know nothing but be well professed in others.

Stupidity annoys the hell out of me, but I can also take comfort in the fact that I am smarter than them.

One thing I hate is when someone has something (dirt, food) on their face. You say, "You've got something there" and touch the left side of your face.

At this point the person will go, "Where, here?" and rub the right side of their face. Sometimes I just want to slap them and say, "No, there!"

You:"Yeah!"

And I suppose you want to know whether this makes us angry, too? Like in the other thread you created with the very same OP?

I agree with you there. The problem I find is that people dont want to admit being wrong, or that theyve said or done something stupid, because they dont want to be branded an idiot. So we stick to our guns and remain completely ignorant for the sake of our pride. And you know what causes it? Every smug prick who goes on the attack when they know theyre right, mocking and belittling the other person because that person fucked up. We dont seem to want to inform anymore, just to win some arbitrary battle for superiority.
