I use them a lot, but it'd be nice if the companies would realize that we shouldn't have to go buy an HDTV just to read the fucking things.

What's worse then NO subtitles (which is pretty bad), is BAD subtitles.

Bioshock's Subtitles are HORRIBLE.. They can hardly ever keep up with the speech, and often are missing large segments of dialogue.

It's game Dependant for me.
In games like Just Cause I turn them off, because a)the voice overs affect game play in a very limited fashion and b)because it's easy to understand (its louder than the background noise).

In games like assassins creed I turned them off on my first run through just so I didn't miss anything. Then I turned them on and had Italian audio, for the foreign film experience.

I'm actually a little upset that I didn't realize I could have had it in Italian, it would have provided an immersive experience, as well as an opportunity to brush up on my Italian ;_;

English is not my first language, so yes, if the game alows it, I ALWAYS turn the subtitles on.

There are a couple of exceptions where I find the subtitles a bit annoying and obtrussive, like most Valve games. I rarely play Half-Life 2, Left 4 Dead or whatever you like from Valve with subtitles turned on. Sometimes I kinda wished the Halo games had a subtitles option somewhere.

What I always considered the best option for any game is to allow me to listen the english voice track and have the subtitles in spanish, there are very few games that allow this in consoles, in PC and the NDS is a lot more frequent and I'm very glad.
