If your computer has a difficult time handling SIMS 2, even in only a few places, you won't be able to find a great computer game that will work. You NEED to update. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but there it is. Trust me as someone who also had the same problem as you.

Dwarf Fortress
That game actually puts a ton of stress on computers, in my experience. Depending on the number of dwarfs and the size of the fortress and stuff, it could easily trump The Sims 2.

Also, X-Com: UFO Defense. [http://store.steampowered.com/app/7760/] It's a turn-based strategy game released in '93 and is one of my favorite video games ever. If you like money management, base management, and turn-based strategy, this is a great game for you to have.
Depends what specs the computer has.
Dwarf Fortress would only take up RAM, Sims 2 needs that and a decent graphics card to handle the 3D stuff.

I wouldn't say DF takes up much RAM either, although i've never really managed too far into the game so i wouldn't know for sure.

Oh God, you'd be surprised at how demanding TF2 actually is.
Getting TF2 to run at 60 FPS in a firefight is down to your specific hardware. You could take 2 top of the line PC's and it's likely that TF2 would run well on one and horribly on the other. There are hundreds of threads on the Steam Forum about FPS issues, asking Valve to optimise the game and even guides how to get more FPS out of your computer. My computer has trouble with TF2, but I haven't yet had to use the guidance of the thread "TF2 for the worst computers currently made" which replaces the models with Goldeneye 64 style ones as well as a bunch of other stuff.

Sorry if that sounded like a rant, but there is a tiny bubble of rage in my consciousness that comes to the front of my mind when anyone says that TF2 is a low requirements game.

As for the thread, Tropico and Prince of Persia (Sands of Time trilogy) have already been suggested so I don't really have anything else to add.

What I'm working with here is a laptop that really can't handle much. So, thinking in terms of "games that would put less stress on my computer than the Sims 2" is a handy approach. All that said, because I've never really had a good gaming computer, I've never really learned a lot about all the computer games that are available. That's where you all come in, suggest some good games that my computer could handle without hacking up a processor before dying a slow and painful death.
Easier: Go to "Can You Run It?" http://systemrequirementslab.com/cyri

You select a computer game title. The site scans your machine & tells you if you can run it.

Are you trolling or are you seriously saying that no PC game prior to Sims 2 qualifies as 'great'?

I don't exactly see why my statement classifies as trolling. And no, I think that there are plenty of games older than Sims 2 that are great, but all of them are showing their age. You don't need to buy a $400 computer to be a decent gaming computer, just look around, you can get one for $150 or $200.

He must be trolling.

Anyhow, any of the games mentioned so far will do admirably. I still play a lot of those from time to time.

I hear that even the sh***y computer's laptops can handle TF2. Maybe give that a try but I'm not sure. My lapto couldn't handle it.

Warcraft 3 is a game that it must be able to handle. Graphics are a little blocky but the game itself is still fantastic and is still played a lot online.

Plants VS Zombies is a cheap and very fun game. I'm pretty sure any laptop could handle that. This would probably be the safest bet out of all of my suggestions and one of my favorite.

I have a game on my laptop at the moment called FATE. It's a cheap game and it's like Diablo for kids. (at least that's what people who have played Diablo say). Repetative but still quite fun and a good time waster if you get into it.

Mount & Blade.

http://www.taleworlds.com/main.aspx

It's a medieval mounted combat sandbox game that gives you a ton of freedom. You can download a demo ofit on the website. The demo is cool because it's actually the full game it just prevents you from advancing past level 7 until you buy it. There are also a ton of mods for it including one based of the Berserk manga. I'm not sure if they work with the new War Bands version yet though.

X-Com is a bit dated but still good. Both the original Fallouts are excellent, although the first one is kind of short.

Stronghold 1-2(strategy real time).
Tex murphy (point and click adventure) got to 5 as far as I know.
Close combat (real time strategy) Good fun to play. Had a few in the serie.
Civ (turnbased strategy)
Silent hill (action/horror) 1 and 2 still could be proparly handled by your computer I think.
Arcanum (RPG) very good and if you don't mind the older graphics, it still is a pearl.
Gangsters (real time and turn based strategy).

Always handy to still have a pair of old games on your computer for reference ;)

Thief 1 and 2 will work on ancient hardware. Morrowind was already suggested, as was Diablo. If you like Diablo games, Torchlight, Fate, and Sacred 1 are all good bets. Looking at my game boxes lying around, I see Tron 2.0 which was really good. Bad jumping mechanics, but great fun otherwise. Just learn to quicksave a lot.

as far as FPS games, go with anything Id made pre-2000. That means Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, Hexen, Hexen II, Quake 1-3. None of which are really up to spec with modern games, but they are still a lot of fun since they don't make games like them anymore. A few other suggestions that might work would be the original Half-Life games or the original Unreal.

I'd expect Freelancer to work just fine too. There are some nice mods like the Discovery mod that makes it practically into a MMO.

Warcraft 2 or 3 (3 may be pushing it I don't know)
Starcraft
Fallout 1 and 2
Half-Life 1
Deus Ex
uh...
Sorry man, I'm not much help out of all those the only ones I've actually played are Warcraft 3 and Starcraft, being born in '96 and just getting a good PC recently means I missed a lot of classics.

Freelancer
Morrowind
Deus Ex
Total Annihilation
Neverwinter Nights
Giants: Citizen Kabuto
Diablo 2
Warcraft 3
Jedi Outcast and/or Jedi Academy

All of those games should run fine on an old, weak machine, and they're all great.

I'm not necessarily saying you were trolling, just that it was a very silly thing to say ;D

I'd like to know where you're getting decent gaming computers that cheap as well. The cheapest i could find was like $800 :p

Now, I am primarily a console gamer, the reason for this, however, is not because I have any particular fondness for consoles over the computer, but mostly because I simply can't afford a top of the line gaming computer. Nonetheless, I do still feel the desire to play a computer game from time to time, and that, dear friends, is why I have come to you.

What I'm working with here is a laptop that really can't handle much. I play the Sims 2 sometimes, and usually that's fine, though it can start to run a little slow when I build a really big house.

I like a lot of variety in my gaming diet, so go ahead and suggest anything you've enjoyed. I was thinking of possibly downloading the first Fallout off of Steam, but before I went ahead and did that, I thought I'd come here and ask if anyone had any better ideas. That said, suggest away, I'm all ears.
There so many good games you can play, but i will try and make a "short" list:

- Fallout 1 and 2

- Braid

- World of Goo

- Crayon Physics Deluxe

- Half Life

- Another World

- Planscape: Torment

- Hitman 2

- Sanitarium

- System Shock 2

- Monkey Island 1,2 and 3

- Starcraft

- Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth

- Shadow of the Comet

- Stalker: Shadow of Chernobyl

- Silent Storm

I have listed some classic games that you might need programs like Scummvm or Dos-Box to run, but its worth it :)

You have toons of awesome games to play, most of them much better than the averageness of next-gen releases that plague the shelves today.

The Total War series are a safe bet if you want a game to pour hours into. Anything running up to Rome Total War (so that's Shogun, Medieval and Rome if I'm not missing any) should run fine on low end computers.
Age of Mythology and it's expansion is a fun RTS, I prefered it over Age of Kings.
For RPGs, I spent an awful lot of time on Morrowind. If you go for that, try and get the GOTY edition. I imagine Fallout 1&2 are good also if you can get into them.
A sure-fire decent FPS would be Half Life, and perhaps Halo too. SWAT4 also comes highly recommended from yours truly. A lot of fun online to be had there.
