I've been on the go a lot more, and sometimes I just don't have data to watch funny videos or read more (insert web comic here). A very long time ago I played games on my first smart phone for exactly that reason, so I figured I'd give it a shot again.
I'm looking for something that I can load up and play for maybe 5-10 minutes at a time. It'd be nice if the game isn't overly aggressive with its business model, too. The only games I played before were Battle Cats, a tower defense game I forget the name of, and Kritika, but I'm not against branching out.
So what'cha got?

Plague Inc might be worth a shot. Pick an infectious agent, pick the country where you want Patient Zero to be, buy upgrades to it as it spreads and the world starts reacting to it. Exact specifics vary by infection type.

Good call! I played some of it on PC, it was good fun, can't wait to see how it plays on the small screen.
I also picked up a pseudo- choose-your-own-adventure book/game, since I'm a gigantic D&D nerd. Keep the suggestions coming!

Let's see, there's Puzzle and Dragons, which is a match-three game with gacha elements. Short version is that you make a team of six which determines your attack, hp, recovery and available skills, and you match orbs to deal damage to the opposing health bar(s). Provided you're patient enough and save your magic stones, it's relatively easy to treat as a F2P game, though it is perhaps advisable to reroll a few times depending on your early acquisitions (best starting times being during "godfests").

Fire Emblem Heroes might also work for you. Like PaD, you acquire characters via Gacha and you get the necessary currency regularly enough that patient players can treat it as F2P. More to the point, it's laughably easy to play in short bursts, as it - unsurprisingly - plays very much like a simplified Fire Emblem, meaning that you can pick it up and put it down at a moment's notice

Paid or unpaid? If paid is OK with you, I'm a big fan of all the old Kairosoft games. If you like simple sim games and retro style graphics, they can't be beat. Game Dev Story was my first but the Sushi Spinnery, Dungeon Village, Pocket Arcade Story and Hot Springs Story were some of my other favs. They've even started including language support for languages other than English and Japanese which is nifty.

Unfortunately it seems they've realized that f2p makes more money so they've sort of started going in that direction, much to my disappointment. Still, decent back catalogue of addictive games.

Digital board games are my go-to mobile games. They do cost an upfront price to play (but no microtransaction bullshit). If you utilize Google Opinion Rewards app, you should always have some spare Google Play bucks. I've gotten $50+ over the 2-3 years I've used the app and don't mind paying for apps I really like or the occasional game. Anyway, back to the games, you can get some pretty quick playing games like Baseball Highlights is a deck-building baseball game (with robots and cyborgs) if you like baseball. Sentinels of the Multiverse is an awesome superhero card game but not that light and breezy as you really got to think about your plays. Tigris and Euphrates is a really unique area control game involving tile placement. Pandemic is a pretty simple but hard infection control game. Through the Ages is a really complicated civilization game. Terra Mystica and Small World are both neat little fantasy land control games. Potion Explosion is a cool little potion making game utilizing Bejeweled type gameplay (the actual board game uses lots of marbles and it's a ton of fun). Splendor is a really simple card game. Colt Express is a fun little train robbery game with an action programming mechanic. Ticket to Ride is a simple train game of making lines via collecting sets of color cards. Just search "Asmodee Digital" and you'll find a ton of games because Asmodee like owns every board game company nowadays.

Angry Birds.

It's reasonably enjoyable. Gets hard, but remains fair.

I'm a big fan of Granblue Fantasy. It's a FF6-alike gacha game. Free rolls are fairly plentiful and it's got some bonkers scenarios.

Downside: it only has an app in the Asian region, you you either need to pick up the apk somewhere or, like me on an iDevice, play in your web browser.

Pixel Dungeon is a free roguelike dungeon crawler I enjoy. The code is opensource so there are lots of versions of it to try. I haven't played it in a while but the last one I downloaded had no ads and no push to make players pay for any content.

You can get Shadowrun Returns on mobile. But the writing is very small and might make you trip over cats and other people's little shits as you try to concentrate on the interesting descriptors in the intriguing world.

Fallout shelter is free and low maintenance. Except when it isn't.

Stickman Warriors is good fun and has local multiplayer including co-op.

Space Marshalls...umm, 2? Or was it 1? No, just checked, its 2.

Implosion.

Hearth...stone? I hear people like that, but it's not something I could get into.

Fire Bemblem Heroes works too.

You can pick up Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth for mobile. You can quick save anywhere and generally, battles don't take too long. There's even an auto-battle mode if you just want to configure the characters equipment and skills and watch how they make use of them.
