Title says it all. I keep hear people all over saying that WOW is the "best MMORPG" out there, and having played it myself in the past, I can say that I enjoy it. However, even though that game has clearly dominated online gaming for so long, that doesn't necessarily mean it's the best MMORPG out there.

So, I would like to know if there are any such games out there that you think is better than WOW, and explain why.

Final fantasy 14:A realm reborn ( soon to be heavensward).

First off the community is better. Few and far between are the trolls and greifers. Iv'e beeb playing since the ps4 launch of the game, and the people are so friendly it's surprising . Most people i have come across have been kind to newbies and willing to help, whether it be during the story and leveling or end game content. While it is expected for you to watch a video for end game fights, if you say your new, people will often explain the main mechanics.

Second, the story. While it starts off like every other Mmo, it quickly turns into an epic story for the survival of the land. In my opinion the story is better than Most of what square has released in the last f few years. You come to know and care about upur entourage and the people who inhabit Eozea. The story has been expanding since the release of the game, so there is much to go through, but i just finished the storyline from 2.55 , and HOLY SHIT. Square outdid themselves.

Third, graphics/aestetics. The game looks beautiful. From the different areas and dungeons, everything looks really good , for an MMO. Hell you could mistake one of the zones for Skyrim if you took a screenshot in first person. The music is top notch, especially the boss music for raids and trials and most of the dungeons.

Forth, skill is more important than gear. Just having gear does not mean you are good. I rather have an item level 100 healer who knows his shit than an item level 120, who justs spams Cure all day. While there isn't an overabundance of skills, you have more than enough to occupy you when doing dungeons and endgame. A person who knows what they are doing is worth 2 that don't.

Gameplay wize there isn't much to say, it's the standard MMO affair. Skills on hotbar, some with cooldowns , all do different things. The learning/difficulty curb is more than generous, by time you hit level 50 you should have your class down to a science. That's when the difficulty starts going up little by little and you are expected to be able to deal with multiple simultaneous mechanics at once. You are never locked into one class ever. A single character can be every class if he so chooses. However every class must be leveled from 1. I know people who , on one character, have all the classes leveled to 50. So no more Multiple alts to fill different roles. You just chance your class on a whim.

If you like anymore info don't be afraid to ask.

I think its hard to say if there are better ones its a highly subjective term. Ive only really played three for any length of time and those are WOW, WAR and FFXIV A realm reborn and the last one is the one I have enjoyed far more than the others.

It just feels less grindy to me I mean it is grindy because its an MMO it goes part and parcel with the package but I feel I can play that game at a few hours a night or even every few days and still keep up and enjoy quite a swathe of content. People also seem much more laid back in it as well not everyone ofc but I have not had witnessed the same level of venom levelled at players by others as I have in WAR and WOW maybe I have been lucky or maybe its because the penalty for death is much lower but I have found it quite refreshing.

Gold also doesnt seem to be a big issue although I do in a way miss seeing those ultra rare weapons and pieces of armour on WOWS AH with FFXIV its just not the same but even so I was able to get a very good set of armour just from playing PVP for a few weeks.

The game doesnt break many boundaries if any really it just streamlines things which I like and I feel it has much better content than WoW spread throughout although I stopped playing WOW properly when Burning Crusade hit and completely after the Liche king expansion so its obviously much more fleshed out than when I left it and they seem to borrow/steal good ideas from each other quite freely so I am sure it will have implemented many features from FFXIV into it just like FFXIV has borrowed the fates from WAR albeit it has handled them in a much better if not quite as impressive way.

If you want PVP focus tho stay the hell away from FFXIV. Oh also most enemies outside of Dungeons dont attack you on sight which is quite nice and even those that do have to actually see you so if you walk behind them then you are good which makes some missions a lot easier. Im pretty casual now with MMOS so maybe thats why I like it more. There is definitely content for the hardcore but overall it seems much more accessible and unlike WOW and WAR I have not been grinding on mobs for XP and/or drops which is nice as I found that boring as hell.

Im also in general a fan of FF so that helps but then I like Warhammer as well (also loved the early PVP of WAR shame it fell apart after lvl 30)

Define "better". There are games that definitely occupy certain niches better, or drive a certain kind of game play better. If we're talking about loot/level treadmill MMOs though, you've got WoW and then you have a whole load of wannabes and hanger-ons.

I enjoyed WoW for a short time at the beginning, but I was playing an older MMO at the time as well, one I always preferred and went back to more. That is Lineage 2 and it's first 4 chronicles, they were the shit (until NC Soft wanted to copy WoW and changed all the rules and design dramatically, the fuckers). So it's fucked now and I'll always miss it, but I understood WoW.

In WoW you had more control and were able to jump, it is has an easy to gage interface and layout, there were many quests and many were different, it has diverse area's, it's dungeons were challenging fun and usually had an interesting boss at the end, the PvP was always full, the cel graphics made no loading hassles (for me anyway), it has many classes, character options, skills, builds, sets, enchants, the mounts, flying, etc. WoW had a lot going for it at the time and I can easily see why it was more popular.

However, while Lineage 2 didn't have as much, it suited me more. Besides preferring the atmosphere, music, general design (besides the revealing armours) and class ideas, it was really fucking difficult and the rules were really punishing, as well as murders waiting everywhere and monster ambushes you had to look out for. I never needed anyone's helping getting anywhere in WoW since I had no struggles at all, but in Lineage 2 you needed it, and it made you want to actually read all the dialogue to find special things and get into a big clan to get the best stuff. So it felt like I achieved something when I did get past a certain point, and besides seeing great execution, this is one of the most important parts in games for me.

Another thing I loved about Lineage 2 was seeing the market place. In WoW you could easily access the warehouse and find what you want to buy, and that's fine. I found it more exciting though looking through peoples custom made stores, looking out for good deals and watching out for tricks. Including they could put their own little message as well, and many people were comedians it seemed. Another thing that was more of a challenge I guess, especially that item drops were a lot more rare.

Also, I reckon the raids were more interesting in Lineage 2, mostly because of the interesting monsters. Nothing in WoW felt as big as fighting Antharas with more than 200 people and you having to time when to come in. Including there was a boss I loved who grinned at everyone on a high ledge playing a creepy melody on a big organ, controlling crazy looking demons, and you had to listen out for when to strike hard.

And one thing about the summoners in Lineage 2 that I've only gotten in one other game is the complete freedom of control over your summon. I mean, it felt like a second player, you used to be able to send it as far as you wanted too, and there were certain tricks you could perform to make grinding easier and more fun. The summons were expensive, but it was worth it.

And of course, overall, I preferred the game play in L2. Despite me saying you had less movement compared to WoW, I enjoyed just clicking where to go next while selecting less skills that mattered more instead of using the same exact barrage of skills on every single damn enemy. I became sick of WoW in no time because I hated selecting the same buttons for every mob. Most MMO's are like that now, and I find watching 'em over and over just makes it more tedious. While in the old Lineage 2 you mostly just selected 1 or 2 with good timing and it would effect the outcome of the fight, including that we were encouraged to use more items at later stages, so it never felt like I was over-doing anything. Well, that wasn't true for everyone of course. Lineage 2 certainly had lots of grinding, but there were ways around it. In fact, I found a way to level with gambling which I thought was funny.

Lineage 2 was never ever perfect and it had loads of problems, but I still feel it had more purpose as an MMO than WoW. I mean, I did it all in WoW; the flying and the raids being the pinnacle, but it became old quick, and so went back to L2 where everything was very risky.

It'd probably help if you could clarify a bit. Better in what way? What are you looking for in an MMO?

Better is a subjective term thats going to be up to personal opinion but Ill list some that I played and enjoyed more then WoW

The secret world (I play this for the unique world and investigation style missions, combat blows)
Raiderz (unfortunately dead due to low population and Maiet abaondoning it but still the tightest combat in any MMO Ive ever played)
Tera (cool aesthetic, good story, spatial combat, its pretty good)
Everquest (still the best raiding content Ive ever played)
Rift (for all its "were wow but better" I actually enjoyed it more due to class designs and rift events)
Aura kingdom (excellent hotkey combat with good story and an anime aesthetic)
Planetside 2 (ok its an MMOFPS but a good one. If only it had destructable terrain it would be transcend good and become nearly perfect)
Star wars the old republic (its Kotor if Kotor let you explore the setting more which is awesome, Imperial agents the best story IMO)

"Better" really comes down to what you actually want from a game like that.

Personally I've been enjoying Guild Wars 2 lately, as the the freedom it offers was a nice change from what I was used to. It seems just more multiplayer friendly than WoW has become, and many others. It's weird to say but that's how it feels to me at least. Since things scale like they do in Guild Wars 2 there kinda is no outleveling content, and pvp is putting everyone on equal footing.

However, if we are talking better MMOs I would like to find one made like they used to. Remember being able to put items on the ground for example? I miss that.

Alternatively, if you are not just looking for another game with Elves and Dwarfs, swords and shields, Elite Dangerous is basically a MMO with open play, and with the PowerPlay patch right around the corner, it might be a good time to check it out.
It may not have the quest/story structure as WoW and it's clones, being more of a sandbox, but there is still a lot of fun to be had in it's living and ever changing world.

Depends on what you define as better really.
Here are some suggestions:

Guild Wars 2 (major expansion coming soon)
- Box purchase no subsciption, there is an ingame store, all cosmetic and conveinience no P2W
- No holy trinity setup, so no dedicated tank/healer classes.
- More interactive combat style with aimed abilities and dodge rolls.
- Interesting lore and the personal story quest line is well done.
- Less overall abilities, only 8 on your bar at a time a heal, 3 picked and 4 determined by your weapon.
- Good in game economy with probably the best AH system in an MMO outside EVE.
- Game is more oriented around exploration and personal goals than rushing to max level and grinding the best gear.
- Nothing in the way of raiding in the usual sense, there are world bosses that need large groups to deal with
- PvP is pretty standard fare except for RvRvR which pits 3 servers against each other in a massive area with forts to fight over and siege weapons to build.
- Friendly community for the most part

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn (major expansion coming soon)
- Box purchase + subscription fee setup
- Standard MMO combat, slighty slower paced with a 2.5 sec GCD compared to WoWs 1.5
- Job system is unique and allows a single character to swap between any class or job.
- Player housing
- Tough end game raiding and dungeons will wipe any group if you don't pay attention to mechanics.
- Weak PvP
- One of the best looking MMOs on the market
- Indepth and epic main story arc
- Fleshed out world and lore, eeven more so if you are into FF lore.
- One of the best crafting systems in MMOs each craft being a class unto itself
- Not much world exploration once you are done leveling
- Fairly friendly community

Star Wars: The Old Republic
- Either F2P (with restrictions) or subscription, there is an ingame store, all cosmetic and conveinience no P2W
- Standard MMO combat
- Solid PvP (huttball is super fun), starfighter PvP is good fun.
- Excellent class stories make alts worth it (imp agent story line is my fave).
- Some world exploration if only to find the holocrons
- If you're into star wars lore you will love it
- Crafting is interesting with you sending out your NPC crew to do crafting for you
- Player housing
- End game PvE is nothing special

Not to nitpick, but there's actually 10 (5 weapon, 1 heal, 3 utility, 1 elite) + class abilities (which varies from 1 for warriors to I believe 4 for engineers).

I would recommend GW2, but know ahead of time that it is much more focused on leveling and then personal goals, as there isn't a gear grind or any real sort of gating like other MMOs.

I prefer Guild Wars 1 (but it's no longer updated), Guild wars 2 and The Secret World (although it's not much of an MMO) but they're not so much "better" as different. I can't think of an MMO that's WoW but better.
I wish I could take Tera's combat and put it in a different game.

As someone who doesn't feel like spending any money on a monthly subscription right now, I'm just playing Dungeon Fighter Online, seeing as Neople just brought it back from the dead. It's basically what you'd get if Final Fight had Street Fighter special move inputs, and a standard MMO leveling and equipment system. Neople is doing a much better job than Nexon did with managing the series. It used to be that you had to buy randomly generated cosmetic items because they had stats attached to them (with real money), but it seems in this iteration, not only are they NOT random, but they can be acquired with in-game currency. Granted, doing it FTP will take an egregiously long time, but the grind is what MMOs are all about.

I'm not sure I'd say it is objectively better than WoW, but I recently started playing ESO and enjoy it a lot. It has some half-decent design choices and the PVP is easily the best I've seen in an MMO (and I have played WoW, GW2, ToR and some others). Also, it's in the Elder Scrolls universe, so if you dig the lore that's an added bonus.

It's...kind of all subjective? I've been 'playing' WoW for nearly a decade now and I still find other MMOs to be a lot more interesting recently. Recently, meaning the last few years.

I enjoy Tera for its combat and visuals. Elin 4 lyfe, brah.

I enjoy FFXIV for its combat, visuals, and FF story/setting. Plus, cat girls. I mean, come on, cat girls.

SWTOR was pretty neat, just for the bioware story stuff, but I couldn't really get through the grind for it.

And...

Blade and Soul is coming out later this year, so I'm really looking forward to that one. :D For the combat and visuals.

I'm a simple dude.

For sheer content and very solid gameplay World of Warcraft is untouchable. The two MMOs I'm most anticipating are Black Desert Online and Everquest Next. BDO is already out in Korea and based on gameplay from some few English speakers who have access it's in great shape prior to its upcoming Western release.

Let's not forget that both the industry and gamers have been talking about the "WoW killer" since 2005. Millions of words written and spoken with no effective results. I agree with the general approach some games are taking nowadays - the weaknesses of WoW are the graphics given it's age and it's lack of advanced and interesting gameplay features. Black Desert Online has amazing graphics, horse breeding and whaling, a fluid Witcheresque combat sytem, and a much more robust crafting system than WoW.

Honestly, I think even the creative people at Blizzard would like to be relieved of having to continue working on such a tired game, so BDO and Everquest Next would be doing even them a favor by claiming a large share of the MMO market.

I would recommend both Guild Wars 1 and 2. I also would recommend RIFT as it does have a much better class/build system(can triple class). Marvel Heroes or Path of Exile if your into Action RPG's like the Diablo series.

Having tried one of the Asian beta's for Blade and Soul, I would definitely recommend that one as well. It was actually really fun and engaging provided you don't find the flavor too Asian.
