So NC Soft screwed that one too.
Seems to be a recurring theme for them.

I friggin' loved old Lineage II. Even playing a character class considered "useless" by many - Warsmith (see my avatar). It was hard, it was busy, it was giving you a sense of accomplishment like no other when you managed to group up and do something with your buddies - against other players, most of the time.

But then? Instances, no XP loss on death zones everywhere, rushing everyone to their final class change like there's no tomorrow, half-arsed PvP extensions not getting updated from their half-arsed status forever (forts, olympiad, ...), every land expansion getting smaller and smaller and just adding something we never heard before to it instead of expanding already existing lore (where's there rest of Elmore?!?) ...

It's just not fun anymore.

There were no useless classes I remember. Wasn't the Warsmith the class that could summon machines and even summon titans to bring down walls in seiges? Or was it the other one that creates gear and weps? Either way, I remember our clan required both for war, though that's a long time ago for me now.

Anyway, everything you said is true, and it just kills me inside. And it reminded me that I also hated how they brought level 70 mobs into low level area's where there used to be mobs of the appropriate level, and they just look like ever other fucking low level mob! And also, I had plenty of D Crystals for my summoner which was expensive, and out of the fucking blue they suddenly made them useless for me because now I needed spirit ore to summon instead. I really hate NC Soft.

Warsmith was the crafter, and yes, we could also summon siege machines (though that was expensive as hell). The other dwarven class was the Bounty Hunter; the one with the "Spoil" skill, for mat gathering. Good for commerce, in any case, due to larger inventory and weight limits.

Both were considered mostly "useless" in term of PvP and PvE power, though I did get quite a few people to eat dirt simply due to the fact that I had a ton of CP and HP and could (and did) carry something like 1000 GCPs and a ton of GHPs/QHPs with me and had no problems using them.

EVE and if you can wait Starcitizen.

Seriously, there's no game that did the classic MMO better than WoW. In the end WoW had the best controls and the best endgame by far.
If i could mish-mash something into WoW it would be the whole GW2-economy (or Eves).
But the rest just is does certain things right but fails to deliver on all fronts. There's a reason why WoW is (or was, i don't keep up with the numbers) the topdog out there for such a long time.

GW2 came pretty close but the combat system on certain classes are sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo dull. It's the worst case of classic WoW "MoltenCore AFK-Hunter"-rotations. If GW2 just would've kept the original skill system it would'v been perfect. To this day i can't even begin to wrap my head around the fact that they changed their biggest asset in the sequel.

I won't ever buy another game from NCSoft because of them killing off City of Heroes. I miss that game on a regular basis and this is coming from someone who generally dislikes MMOs.
Yeah, I know the feeling. Check out Icons, which is a slow-going attempt to recreate City of Heroes using the client information in the installer, if you just want to play with the Character Generator and fly around an empty Paragon City again, though they've added the ability to add NPCs for screenshots and stuff.

Also, City of Titans (the Phoenix Project) looks like it will be interesting, if they finish it. A bunch of the people from Virtue and other servers got together and kickstarted a spiritual successor.

Totally depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking for a casual grouping / raiding / gearing experience, then probably none are better. SW:TOR does have largely a similar experience, but with the added story elements. That games is a little bit more similar to old WoW (pre-wotlk); though more like new WoW every day.

If you're looking for something radically different however. The answer really changes.

Looking for a very immersive, more player driven experience? I'd probably recommend Age of Wushu / Wulin (sadly P2W problems though) or Archeage.

Rift & GW2 have more varied world events to spice things up than WoW currently has.

In terms of true sandboxes, most are sadly ubershit. Which is paradoxically caused by catering too much to the "nostalgia glasses" crowd. Probably the best one out there is Ryzom, or EVE if you like spreadsheets.

Pure PvE experience wise, FFXIV would be good.

Aion (NA) / TERA for games that have forgiving F2P models.

Planetside 2 for your FPS mmo needs.
